Visited the cafe for coffee and raisin toast. The coffee was excellent and the raisin toast was the best we have ever eaten - full of fruit, thick and tasty! The cafe is warm and full of character. Service was good though the coffee took a while to come out.

Great cafe with excellent coffee and food

This is a gem.  Clever dining options, great ambience and the nicest staff.  The salad offering each day are just superb.  I limited myself to two and the were amazing,  simple food done well.  
The broader menu has something  for everyone.  I cannot wait to come back.  Worth the trip!

A gem, wonderful menu. 

This was to a special occasion lunch for my wife’s birthday, so we booked in advance and arrived on time…,12.30 pm and were shown to a minuscule round table and two very rickety stools.  As I am disabled I suggested to the waiter who showed us the table that both myself and my wife felt unsafe.  He managed to provide me with a proper chair, but not my wife. All the time acting superciliously and almost dismissing us because we were old!  He eventually found us a decent table and two chairs, although it was opposite the entrance, and every time some entered or left it was like being buffered by the icy north wind.
The food was terrific.  The ambience (apart from the icy wind when ppl came of left) was excellent. But that arrogant waiter!  He needs a lesson in manners, how to greet clients, and how to smile.  He ruined what could have been a wonderful day.

I have been eating at Fig ever since it opened and the food is always excellent.  It is by far my favourite cafe in Castlemaine.  The cooked vegetable salads Ottolenghi style are wonderful and you need to get there early (say 12.30) or they could be sold out.  Every thing is made fresh on the day.  Recently there has been a delicious pumpkin risotto.
The staff are friendly and super hard working.  Service is prompt almost all the time.  It is rare that I eat out anywhere else!

Disappointed. 
My husband had stayed in the the front apartment before, and enjoyed it. It had a large bed with a nice lounge and TV area. With a separate large bath room with a claw foot bath....
So he tried to book to take me away. They were .booked out, when the owners rang to say they had a cancellation. That is was  the back apartment..  hubby booked thinking they would be the same, as the owners didn't say other wises.
We got there and it is alot smaller. No bath, the couch area is awkward.  The bed was small. The down light was out of the roof. The paint around the air-conditioning was not finished. The walls in the bathroom had big chips around the floor . The most disappointing thing is that we paid the same price as the front apartment.
The owner did say that the cafe was closed for the weekend, and thank goodness it was... cos the apartment windows and door are right on the cafe outdoor eating area.  You would have people eating looking into your room . No privacy and not to mention you can hear the cool room from the adjoining place starting up and shutting down all night.

Disappointed 

We called in for coffee and cake which was exceptional, after a 40 minute wait. During that time we had ample time to observe the harried, terse staff turn people away after they came in and approached the counter. How easy would it have been to put fullybooked till x o'clock outside. The one barista also took peoples orders and settled the bills. Hence the 40 minute wait for coffee. Barista is a fulll on job in this cafe and should not have to multitask at busy times. Finally label the cakes. Who wants to stand in the narrow entry ,reading the noticeboard and blocking the way.  Everycustomerenquiry was too much for the harried staff. God help them at easter. The only saving grace was the food. How much nicer it would be if the place was adequately stuffed and filled with friendly talent.

Food exceptional, staff could do with help and customer service training

We were recommended to have lunch here by a local and I’m so glad we asked. It was a gorgeous little find and I so want to go back and try the duck dish. We lucked in with a table in the courtyard as clearly a popular place. The salads had all gone but thankfully the fritters and duck plate was still available. The service was relaxed, friendly and all masked up. We will be back again!

Quaint little cafe find in Castlemaine

This is the second time I have come to Fig Cafe for lunch, and will not be returning. The male waiter head waiter has been incredibly rude both times - this visit particularly. I found myself being overly nice to try and receive some basic polite service, but was met with sarcasm and bluntness.  I understand that he may be taking out his own emotion on others, but it’s not a pleasant experience to have as another human being. I walked out in tears. 
Please let him know that his actions are affecting those around him.

Went here for breakfast and lunch.  Loved the beautiful fresh food and salads.  The environment was really nice and the staff friendly. 
It was a shame they don’t open earlier and later!  
Go there you don’t be disappointed.

Fabulous Fresh food

Best Danish I’ve ever tasted with plenty of blueberries and custard. The soy hot chocolate and coffee were also good as was the Portuguese tart. Great ambience both inside the cafe and in the garden out the back. The service was a bit slow but they were busy probably with locals as repeat customers. A little gem.
