I loved this hostel, it's worth every dollar it's paid for.The rooms are small and with good mattresses and bedding.Everything is very clean and you can see the care that is put in keeping it well.Ottawa is small so it's also a good option to visit because you can go anywhere on foot.

A super quiet hostel with plenty of common space.

Good things: clean and tidy, new towels everyday, nice big shower (upstairs - the downstairs was pretty tiny), big spacious lounge area, beds were comfortable, there were barely any people so we ended up with a private room without having to pay more. 
Not so good things: water ran cold after only three people showering (god knows what it would be like when the hostel is full), chairs in the lounge are super dodgy (watch out), kitchenette is badly equipped (eg, no teaspoons but there is a whisk!?),

We weren’t allowed to wear our shoes at all inside the hostel (I guess for cleanliness?) and the windows which on the Hostelworld description are opening windows, are not allowed to be opened so the rooms feel quite close when you wake up in the morning. 

All in all, felt spacious bit was less than half full. I think when it was full it would feel cramped and small.

Nice little place in the heart of Ottawa..walking distance to everything downtown..long staircase..older home/building..nice common & kitchen area..2 showers, only used one downstairs a little small for us bigger ladies, upstairs shower much bigger...bunk beds 2 in a room, not the most comfortable, can feel the bar when laying down, rooms are warm, has a fan..back patio very nice, not the place to stay if you have any mobility issues..asked for two lower bunks and only got one, difficult to get out of top bunk..other then that, its nice

Coming together as one

After reading everyone else's reviews i was convinced this was the place to stay. The descriptions are precise.  It was like walking into an Ikea style home with everything provided for you including a huge pot of ground coffee and tea bags to help yourself. 2 computers, and a wall mount TV. There is a lovely enclosed backyard porch with a barbecue off the main floor as well. The home was immaculately clean. The rooms were very comfy and cozy. The Swiss Hotel next door runs this place and they were very thoughtful and courteous upon checking in. Parking is limited but they do provide parking at an extra cost and if your lucky you can park on the street at certain times. Strategically situated within steps of the Rideau Canal, Byward Market, the Parliament Buildings, Shopping, lots of Restaurants and other downtown attractions you really don't need anything else if you are there on a business trip, a short stay over, travelling solo or with friends...If you are the quiet, responsible and respectful type then this is the place for you and the price is right. 10 stars all the way. Will definitely be back again now that i've experienced it.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

It's a lovely little hostel in Ottawa, so I was able to walk to the city center, and the owner is very friendly and open-minded, and the rooms are clean and the bed is comfortable.

That's perfect.

Having spent many a night in hostels around the world, the cosy comfort, cleanliness and ambience of the Barefoot Hostel was more than a pleasant surprise. The location was great - close to grocery stores, the Byward Market and public transportation as well as within walkable distance to most of the major attractions of the city (Parliament Hill, the Museum of History and the National Gallery among others). The staff was most accommodating.  I was lucky, perhaps, in my visit as the young women staying there at the same time as I were interesting and full of great conversation about life's experiences. We had some good laughs and conversations. As it is a small hostel with an emphasis on respect of others fellow travellers, it works. Kudos for the decision to accommodate women only.  I will definitely return when I next come to Ottawa.

Great Budget Accommodation for Women.

Stayed mid-end sept (unseasonable warm). The bottom half of the place with the living room and kitchen and entrance had aircon(a/c), but the upper level where all the rooms were was incredibly HOT it was like sleeping in a sauna. They had fan machines in the rooms but they didn't produce cold/hot air, it was just pushing air around (ventilating maybe). 
I couldn't sleep, everyone else struggled too. 

I ended up sleeping on the couch both nights I was there and noticed another girl was already down there my first night doing the same when I moved from my bed to the couch downstairs. I am from QLD, Australia and am very, very used to hot weather. I love it. But I would think they would have some way to cool where you sleep given the heat streak Ontario was having. Even though Ottawa only gets a few weeks of real summer every year. 
It made the stay horrible, given when all you need is a place to crash.

The  Barefoot Hostel was full of pleasant surprises.  
The employees are friendly and kind, the beds clean and comfy with a good pillow and nice duvet.  Lots of space to lounge and a kitchen to use if you dont want to eat out at the the great restaurants near this great location.  Good wifi, great coffee and the best homemade mueslii.  Get the breakfast, you wont be sorry!

Check-in at the Swiss Hotel. It is 5 metres from the hostel. Entrance is only open with a chip card, as there is no one in the hostel. All rooms are clean. Only quite small. Unfortunately, beds were a little quiet.;-) Kitchen and living room were also clean. Every day was cleaned by cleaning staff, and the beds were made. Fresh towels are also available every day. About 50 metres away you can find a supermarket. Otherwise there are many restaurants, bars, etc. A bathroom was available on the top floor, and one on the bottom. Actually, it was easy enough.

The hostel is centrally located. The rooms and bathroom are functionally furnished. The kitchen is quite well equipped. The individual rooms no longer have locks. This hostel is managed by the adjacent hotel.
