We have not been very happy in our previous French hotels and restaurants as the mannerism are not  often  friendly or comfortable.  However on this occasion staff were wonderful.  I wonder whether it is because it is a young team.  They do a very good job and for the first time in a French hotel we felt welcome. The room was wonderful and clean.

Restored hope

We stopped in this hotel enroute to Bordeaux. Very tastefully furnished. The room was huge.The staff were superb. The pool area is great with a beautiful backdrop. Great find and would love to return for longer.

Overnight stop in beautiful hotel

We were a family of 18 people who booked 11 rooms for 2-3 nights. Emilie on reception was amazing sorting out all the details about dinner on the Friday night, the room allocations, the gate code and fob for the Saturday night after the wedding when we needed to get back in at 3.30am! Thanks also to Anna and team in the restaurant and to Thomas for running about with the iron and board. Thank you to Lucas too for cleaning our car after the birds had covered it, overnight. The facilities are great too, with outdoor pool, and coffee machines in the rooms. A pretty hotel mixing old style with modern twists. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you

Fantastic hotel with amazing staff.

Ten minutes walk downhill from the centre of Angouleme - a little longer going up, the roads are very steep!  The hotel is in a peaceful location, with a small garden next to a little park.  We enjoyed exploring the town.
 We stayed here for two nights on our journey down through France.  We had room 5, a large room with a very big balcony.  Unfortunately there were no cushions for the outside furniture, and when we asked, a mixed assortment which did not fit was provided.
The room was clean and spacious, accessed by a flight of stairs behind the bar.  The bed was comfortable, the black-out curtains very efficient.  Tea and coffee making facilities were provided.  
We would have liked to have eaten in the hotel one night, however the restaurant was block-booked by outside groups for the two nights we were there, and also the evening of the day we left.  Room service was not available.  
The reception staff were all very friendly and helpful, especially Hannah.  They recommended and booked restaurants for us in the town, and assisted with any queries we had.
Parking would be difficult if you arrived when a large outside group was present.


Pleasant, but room for improvement

Stayed here in April in a Premium Suite, it was at the top of the stairs from the restaurant (I think room 8). The room was huge, fresh and very clean. With an open bathroom behind the bed (sectioned off). It is very stylish with a very large roof terrace with seats for seating outside, with views over the park below. AC as standard. 
The hotel was a 10-minute walk into the centre of Angouleme and parking was easy once we found the entrance to the hotel, which is through an archway (see image below). I drove past the hotel 3 times trying to find the entrance. 
The staff are warm and welcoming, the building and grounds are well maintained. The Continental breakfast was very good with local produce. 
We will stay here again, as it was perfect location to explore Angouleme. 


An Amazing Stay - We Will Be Back!

We had decided to do Valentine's Day at St. Gelais and we were not disappointed with the excellent meal..The impeccable service..very easy to park in the courtyard of the hotel..I recommend St. Gelais and its restaurant.

Very beautiful Valentine's Day 2023

Heated pool in the garden, a tranquil spot in Angouleme once visited by the cast of "The French Dispatch". Nice rooms and near enough to town to walk , although it is hilly. Nice breakfast available and on site dining restaurant.

A Hotel with Character

As almost every year, we offered ourselves the small luxury of staying at this charming hotel, itself located in the equally charming city of Angoulême. And as always, we fully enjoyed the charm of the Saint-Gelais, its quiet location, its setting, its excellent restaurant... and the delights of its croissants, among other good products, at breakfast. No disappointment, therefore, but just a little regret with regard to the room. Having not been able to have a more charming room, we found ourselves in number 11, arranged in mezzanine, the bed is on the second floor. Problem, which we have been using for a long time when we arrived at the restaurant: let's go back to the restaurant! and we don't like to stay in the hotel, so it's a minimum, but it means that the staff will be able to get up and down to the bathroom.

Always the same pleasure

We stayed on the first floor in a large room with a very large bathroom. It's a small room, the lack of storage that should make a long stay a little uncomfortable. The hotel staff are very friendly. The small pool is very nice to cool off during the heat. The hotel was occupied by Wes Anderson's team during the filming of The French Dispatcher and the hotel is filled with memories, memories of the filming.

Atypical and cosy

Our bedroom was spacious (we had plenty of room to install our baby bed), well equipped, clean and quiet (though communicative and on the ground floor). The bed and pillows are comfortable. The staff are very pleasant, smiling and caring. Thanks to the whole team, we will be back with great pleasure!
