We loved the whole experience at Omiya Ryokan in Zao Onsen. We had a spacious and generously proportioned corner room and a lovely view over the village. The Kaiseki dinners and breakfasts were incredible and so carefully served. Omiya’s staff were lovely, and I want especially to mention Ishiyama-san for her wonderful help in making forward bookings for us and organising our suitcase to be sent onwards. She was always so smiling and patient. The ryokan’s Onsen was beautiful and we enjoyed it every day, wearing our Omiya yukatas. The outside onsen foot-bath was a lovely touch, and, hoping for enough late-season snow we even managed two lovely ski days!

An excellent ryokan in all respects.

We stayed 3 nights at this ryokan in a ‘Japanese retro style room’ (room 222). Our room was spacious and warm, and had an ensuite toilet. 

We were able to rent skis directly from the ryokan cheaply and walk to the ski terminals. 

The ryokan’s onsen were quite small but beautiful, with the men’s and women’s sides swapping twice per day.

The food was particularly good at this ryokan. I don’t like fish or other seafood but I usually end up eating a lot while in Japan. However, the chef at Oomiya provided superb kaiseki dinners and breakfasts without seafood based on my booking request. I really appreciated having a few days off seafood,especially when it was such superb food!

Superb food, lovely onsen

A certain amount of cash (€900) was stolen from our backpack inside our room either during dinner or breakfast time on our last day, before departure. I realised that immediately after leaving the hotel and I could not go back to report it because we would miss first the train and then the flight. Now we cannot file a police report from overseas and there is no way for us to contact the management of this ryokan to inform them about the event. In fact, no email address is available online and the staff at the ryokan could barely speak some word in English, so it is pointless to try to contact them via phone. This was the most expensive ryokan we stayed at during our trip in Japan and never would we expect that such a miserable action would take place. Very disappointed! Besides this event, the rooms were very beautiful, the dinner was below average and there was no open-air hot spring.

We are from San Francisco and had a wonderful stay here for two nights in the low season

Don't forget to call them to pick you up at the bus station, otherwise it's a 15 minutes uphill walk to the Ryokan, not easy if you carry two luggages

You can use their sister onsen free - drop off and pickup are free. Those onsen are excellent facility with spectacular mountain/snow view, a must go.

We appreciate they help us to find our sun glass lost in the bus, what a nice surprise service

Room are spacious, bedding are warm, much better than other hotel we stay in Japan.

In all, we will definitely came back next time we visit the winter ice monster.

Excellent Stay

This Ryokan is renovated with Tatami mats covering all the corridors in the facilities, so you can walk with bare foot without slippers, which is very comfortable, but as the edge of stairs are made of wood, I had pain in the sole of my feet while stepping up/down.  The rooms are clean & refurbished with updated furnishings, which is pretty good, but our room was located at the far end of the buildings that are built in conjunction one after another, so it took quite a while from the room to the Onsen bath, the front or the restaurant. Onsen bath of sulfur spring is very nice although I felt sulfur smell/density is a bit thinner than the ones in south part of this Zao-onsen district.  It's a bit pity is that the attitude of two drivers of courtesy bus was quite weird. They hardly spoke any words even if we spoke to them, telling our name and that we made reservation, etc. It seems they simply disregard what customers speak, or are too tired to respond being forced to work too hard (maybe too many pick-up and sending off). Besides, they were not so punctual.... Needles to say, the real quality of Ryokan is exposed where this kind of thing is expressed.

Good renovated Onsen Ryokan, but drivers are weird...

This place embodied everything and anything I heard and hoped for in a ryokan, at an extremely reasonable cost - from the moment we were picked at Yamagata station till when we were dropped off at the bus station.

Apart from the usual scrumptious meals that one would expect from a ryokan (this ryokan had an especially good spread thanks to the famous beef found in the Yamagata prefecture), the level of service from this Omiya ryokan was on another level altogether.

When Kazama-san, our host, picked us up from the bus drop-off point, I distinctly remembered him bending down to wipe our suitcase wheels so we would not dirty the immaculate ryokan, with tatami floors throughout the establishment. And, even though I speak a decent amount of Japanese, he did his very best to accommodate my brother, who only spoke English. 

He sat down and explained how to get around the onsen town and how best to make use of our short one-night stay. He proudly showed us around the ryokan - the dining hall, indoor and outdoor onsen area, the lounge area with massage chairs and blankets and the lobby with sweet sake that one can enjoy after a good onsen soak or a day out on the slopes.

When he saw me struggling to find the famous outdoor baths - Zao Dai Rotemburo (photo can be found in this post) the next morning, he gave me detailed instructions and recommended I buy an entry ticket to the onsen at 300 JPY (a special rate given to the ryokan). It costs 500 JPY when you buy it at the Rotemburo itself.

His attention to details manifested again when he noticed the complimentary JPY500 gift voucher that I did not use sticking out of my plastic bag just as my brother and I were about to leave for the bus station. He asked me for it and ran into the gift shop to get me socks, with Yamagata apples printed on it. It remains one of the most precious souvenirs I got from Yamagata.

Thank you for showing us the meaning of "おもてなしomotenashi". 
I will visit again in a heartbeat.

The most value-for-money and enjoyable ryokan experience I've ever been on

The good points: - the excellent dinner - the European breakfast buffet in addition to the traditional Japanese breakfast - the service, onsen, common room with massage chairs at the top - the proximity to the cable cars and picturesque city onsens The point to improve: - no clean towel in self-service onsen (for when you forget your towel in the room or you use the onsen several times a day and the towel already used is not dry) A little comment on Zao in October: Zao is better known for skiing and snow monsters in the winter. But for me, Zao is really worth the shot in the fall.

Zao Onsen in the Fall - Relaxing in Omiya

We flew to Narita, Tokyo, and immediately went to this hotel for a rest. The hotel staff were welcoming. They felt welcoming throughout the stay. Dinner and tomorrow were quite dense, as in traditional Japanese Ryokan hotels. Hot water in the spa instantly quenched the tiredness of moving.
