Nice family run place with great meal. Make sure you get the 2 meal stay package (breakfast/dinner). The food here is great, you won't regret it. There is also not much restaurant choice in this town anyway. 

You will be sharing bathroom and there is a communal bath. Room is nice size, its Japanese style so you will be sleeping on the floor. 

The location is in the middle of onsen street. So easy to walk around the small town. About 10 minutes walk to ski lift and 10 minutes walk to the large newer street with convenience store etc.

Wonderful place

Excellent hospitality from the lovely family at the ryokan. Owner was very hospitable and speaks good English. 

Room was comfortable for 2 - sleeping on futons with good heating in the room. Very fast WiFi accessible throughout the inn as well.

There is a public bath in the ryokan with onsen but take note not the natural sulphur ones. There are 3 free public baths around the inn but the size is similar to that in the ryokan and with no bathing facilities. I’d recommend skipping those and opt for the paid ones with outdoor onsen and better facilities. Most of them close by 630pm in winter. 

We opted for breakfast which was a sumptuous spread. The male owner(?) noticed I brought a packet of milk down and offered us additional glasses for the milk. Very thoughtful. 

Location was 3min walk from the bus station and 5min walk to the Zao Ski resort / cableway. There is a Lawson 5min walk from the inn and several eating places. One ramen place he recommended just opened 24 Dec ‘19 - it was yummy and just a 4min walk away and opened till 10pm.

Summary: highly recommended for anyone looking for a place to stay in Zao Onsen area. 

Comfortable ryokan with excellent hospitality 

Small and cozy ryokan. Owner's family is very friendly ,good food both dinner and breakfast. 
No private either toilet and bathroom inside room. but you can enjoy an onsen
Also provide a free coupon for 3 public bath nearby.

Feel like home

We are an Australian family of 4 - the kids are adults - and we decided to come to Zao for the skiing and an authentic Ryokan experience. We have had a brilliant  time staying at this Ryokan all sleeping together in a tatami room, experiencing the in-house onsen and enjoying the beautifully prepared and delicious breakfasts and dinner. The meals are nothing less than superb. The village of Zao is interesting to walk around and spend time in for the non-skier in our family (me) and the other 3 have spent 2 full days skiing and snowboarding and don't want to leave. This place is brilliant. I imagine it would be tricky for the western solo traveller to get to because of the almost complete lack of English but it's well worth the adventure if you can make it happen. We travelled by private car from Fukushima and our adult son who works in Japan was translator - making it all possible.
