STF Skäralid Hostel

As others have said, some good and some bad.

Location:
There are two STF hostels by the national park, this one is in Skäralid, and there is another one at the other entrance of Söderåsen (Röstånga).
 I would say that the Skäralid entrance is better to start to explore the park and has more trails. The good point of the other one in Röstånga is that its near a little village so you can access a little shop and some restaurant/cafes. 
There is a bus to take you to nearest villages from this hostel but only one every hour or two hours! And it stops very early in the eve (no restaurant visit possible).
This hostel is near the park which was beautiful but has absolutely nothing around so you would have to bring your food. There is a restaurant by the park only open for lunch. 

Cooking: 
At the hostel there is a kitchen where you can cook with the food you brought, there is a lot of kitchen utensils but nothing else but salt and pepper, so bring also oil, herbs etc, if you need them. Im not saying all this as a negative point for the hostel, only to be prepared :)

Hostel:
Very confusing on arrival about where to go (the reception is actually the little yellow house by the main road but it's basically almost never open so we walked around, lost, and had to wait for a SMS from them around 16.00 that gave us the code for the old station house) 
The room was nice, quite big and confortable. It has a sink but the showers(2) and toilets (3) are shared. The common areas were pretty clean, although not perfect some days. 
We didn't have access to the breakfast buffet because of Covid19, which we understand, we got a breakfast bag that I would call average (one low quality sandwich, one yoghurt, egg, Kalle and a fruit) and prepared midday the day before... 
I was impossible to sleep without a mask in the mornings as the curtain was completely see-through.
No WIFI in the room.
It was nice though to have sheets and cleaning included, I know its not the case in some other STF.

We had a good stay and I would say that I recommend this hostel as it has everything you would need (if you are prepared with your food) and that you are there to hike anyway and not to stay in a lot, but I found the prices really high for a hostel: 950 for a room with shared facilities and low service. I stayed in another SFT in Orust before that was about 3 times cheaper and had access to an amazing restaurant and breakfast. 
Of course, walking in Söderåsen was amazing :)

Quite good, good location for Söderåsen- but very expensive, low service

1. Do not go to the hostel/camping spot immediately, since the reception is in the yellow vila across the road. This is where you need to check in. Opening hours are ridiculous: 9-11 (checkout) and 16-17.30 (checkin).
2. Wifi did not work in the room. Either we got the wrong password or the net is actually not available in the hostel, only in the vila.
3. Toilets could really be cleaner!!!!
4. Breakfast is 80sek but must be preordered - at least an evening before.
5. Possible to pay for linen and towels as well as for cleaning, or to use own/do it yourself.
6. Kitchen ok, fridge not really clean.
7. Lovely area close to a nature park with great walking paths. 
8. Room was simple and not too big, but had sink!
9. Big common rooms with books and a tv.

Sth good, sth bad

About a month before arrival, we tried to make a reservation for a tent pitch. We did not get any reaction back. We tried our luck and went on a saturday afternoon to the camping, hoping there was space for us. Reception only open between 9.00am and 11.00am, which is worthless on a saturday close to peak season. So no full service at all in this period, as mentioned on camping.se. Called the phone number mentioned on the door of the reception (which was very difficult to find), but no answer.

Luckily another camping nearby was open whole day...

No reaction on reservation, worthless opening hours

With the nearest supermarket 5 km away a car is quite a necessity to have, especially when the busses don't drive that frequently. Apart from that the hostel / vandrarhem wasn't as cracked up as I expected it to be. 

On the STF-website it says you can rent bikes and use wifi, which was the reason we chose for this hostel, but in reality we couldn't rent a bike anywhere and the wifi was only accessible in the 'yellow house' on the opposite of the (provincial) road, about 700 metres from the 'railwaystation hostel' where we were staying. 

When we used the internet at the yellow house we were practically send away since other guest may want to use the place (no other guests were there at the time because the guests staying at the yellow house were German workers who rose up early and got on their ways). The day after they changed the code of the entrance door of the yellow house without telling us and no way to contact anybody to ask. Really annoying. 

Furthermore, the room we got was awful; very narrowly spaced (sitting on the bed our knees hit the wall) and right next to two sewerpipes outside the window. If it rained or someone took a shower in the building or used the toilet you could smell the sewer air drifting through the curtans. When we first asked for another room the girl that was in service (by absence of other staff) looked very very young, unexperienced and she couldn't speak English (while the website of the hostel is in English as well as in Swedish). The day after we spoke to a man (he looked like the owner though I'm not sure of it) who was fully aware of the problems with the room we had. Booking in advance wasn't perhaps such a smart idea. We did get another room, much bigger and less smelly. Still, this hostel was a disappointment even when it was great to be able to go to the natural park Söderåsen which is really recommended.
