When we arrived at the Fitzwalter Arms our booked twin room wasn`t available, but we were told we`d get a bigger room for the same price. Not thinking anything bad, we accepted the offer. We had to walk up some very steep steps to get to the room, so definitely not for anybody with mobility issues. Unfortunately the room wasn`t anything like it looked in the pictures of the homepage. It was big, yes, but that was about it. The walls had big cracks, the ceiling, too. There was a weird smell. The view was interesting, and not something I would`ve chosen if I knew about it - our room was right above a grave yard. The TV remote control didn`t work, and all we got when we mentioned that to the owner was "sorry". No attempt to fix the problem. When we were in bed already somebody tried to get into our room, probably another guest who was confused, but only stopped trying after we yelled a few times. The shower the next morning was the next unpleasant surprise. Hairs in the shower, also attached to the shower head. The water pressure almost not existent. I have very long hair and ended up not washing it because there wasn`t even a hair dryer anywhere to be found in the room. The only nice experience was the breakfast. We only wanted toast and cornflakes, but they were nicely prepared from a friendly young man. The restaurant itself is very nice, but unfortunately we couldn`t eat there the evening before because there was no food being served on Sunday evenings, I guess. This is also something that should`ve been mentioned to us before, as we had to drive all the way back to Canterbury to get some food, which was a 25 minute one way trip. We would definitely not stay there again. I think it would be fair to really show the state the rooms are in. Of course we are aware that the building is very old - but that shouldn`t have anything to do with walls and ceilings that need to be fixed and the not very clean shower cubicle.

Lovely stay with friends here at the weekend. Food great, rooms beautiful and staff very welcoming. Relaxing stay in this gorgeous cosy historic pub. Have rebooked to come back at Christmas. Highly recommend.

Stayed here for a couple of nights, and we were well looked after by Lyn.   Def recommend .  Lovely soft comfortable beds  atmospheric building. No ghosts unfortunately 😍

Lovely place to stay

This was our first post-lockdown overnight stay. It felt very safe, we stayed 2 nights and ate at the restaurant both nights. 

The room was comfortable with an en-suite and lots of sanitiser. There is a kettle for tea and coffee and a tv.

There is a decent menu with traditional pub food. Lynn very kindly cooked for us on Sunday evening after the bbq finished early before we  got back from a day out.

It's good value for the money, breakfast was included and the service was excellent.

We will go back and thoroughly recommend it.

Nice Pub B&B

We would love to say a massive thank you to the landlady and staff at the fitzwalter arms. Lovely atmosphere great food nothing was to much trouble would recommend to anybody who wants a quiet  stay .all I would say you need a car as the village is in the countryside.we are definitely going back next year 

Lovely stay

We have just returned from an o/night stay which was bought as a gift. 
We had dinner, which was really nice and we were regularly attended too. Wine options were good.

Our stay was comfortable and very clean and the breakfast in the morning was the best! 

I’m vegan and although I didn’t ask, the landlady remembered my requests during dinner the night before and adapted a full English breakfast for me, which was so thoughtful and kind. Plus it was delicious.

Perfect stay 🥰

When I arrived, very warm welcome. Lovely room, comfortable bed. As a woman travelling on my own, I was made to feel safe and welcomed, great food (also offered a healthy alternative) bar staff/manager Annie and locals were all really nice and it was great to be able to sit and chat to everyone and not feel uncomfortable because I was staying here on my own. Will definitely stay here again and would recommend to anyone.

Visited Goodnestone gardens we popped in to see if we could have lunch at the pub as the gardens cafe was closed. We had a lovely lunch lots to chose from from curry to pies. Friendly staff lovely atmosphere. Cold day the pub was cold but it didn’t put us off would go again 

Village visit 

So pleased we booked a room here.  A real little gem in the countryside.  The landlords were super friendly & welcoming.  The locals were also very chatty & friendly too.  The village is lovely and take time to read about it on the information board outside the church. 

The building itself is warm & cosy, with a really lovely relaxing feel to it....many an hour could easily be enjoyed sipping on s G&T in the bar!  It also has a nice beer garden, although we didn’t venture that far.  

Food is excellent, just wished I could have fitted in a pudding, sadly I couldn’t.  Breakfast was excellent too.

Our room was simple, cosy, but very comfortable.  Our bed was massive and super comfy.

Would definitely recommend staying here be it for one night or a weekend as there are plenty of interesting places nearby....or just enjoy the hospitality of the landlords & locals!



Fabulous gem in the Kent countryside

Nice, friendly village pub in beautiful countryside. Excellent breakfast and fresh homemade food for dinner with some good ales. Felt very welcome. Spacious room with nice, clean bathroom and massive, very comfy bed. Goodnestone Park Gardens next door worth the visit. Easy to park just at front of the pub.
Really looking forward to come back soon
