Christmas Day lunch… for £100 per head the food was average. The turkey main course was poor. Hardly any turkey , mainly stuffing and the veg were very hard, actually inedible. When I mentioned to the staff I was told well the kitchen was busy !!!!!! Then a 50 minute wait for desserts. I realise it’s very busy on Christmas Day but no excuse for poorly cooked food or such a long wait between a course.  Then no tea or coffee included in price. I dont mind paying at all on Christmas Day as I know their overheads are higher but for £100 I did expect a meal I could eat and not palmed off by staff.

Christmas Day lunch a disappointment

I’ve been to the Sun Inn on several occasions in the past and never been disappointed. Having not been for a while (near 2-3ys) we decided that we would return for a nice family meal. 

It has clearly been taken over and has lost its way from what it once was. 

The staff are all very young and inexperienced. There was no offer of taking us through the wine menu or offer of any specials that could be ordered from the kitchen. 

We ordered the oysters however when they arrived they appeared dry and didn’t look like they had been freshly shucked in the kitchen. We didn’t finish them and left four uneaten. The bread came with a lovely sauce however no spoon so it basically went uneaten… 

We ordered steaks which both had to be sent back to the kitchen. They were cold and raw in the middle
Our second steaks arrived and the cooking of them was poor however we decided just to simply persevere through it and simply wanted to get through the meal by this point. Little to no flavour and didn’t appear to be cooked in butter 

The sauce for the steak is clearly from a packet and was extremely watery. 

We ordered ice cream for the children and the order was wrong… even though we asked two members of staff. 

Overall I felt the staff looked downcast, the morale levels were poor and the atmosphere has completely diminished from what was a fine restaurant. 

The setting remains nice with the lovely open fire but there are certainly areas of improvement required such as the men’s toilet. The floor feels like it’s about to give way! 

A better chef, quality of food produce and some staff training is much needed. 

I hate to write poor reviews however on this occasion and with the cost per head extremely high (same as central Edinburgh) i feel it’s a must. 

Hopefully this place can get back to where it once was. We won’t be returning in a hurry however!!



Family meal

Stayed here for 2 nights so we could attend a concert at Murrayfield and seemed a good location....our room (2) was a good size and so was the bed ,there was  no wardrobe where as you cannot hang your clothes , extremely noisy from the very busy road outside of window , traffic did calm 11.00pm onwards until 05.30 , could not shut the window has very hot in the night and no air conditioning or even a fan to cool down the room. First morning breakfast was fine but last morning was poor ....waited 20 mins for our tea ( we were the only guests in there at the time) and when it came luke warm ...breakfast was also luke warm and forgot to make the toast to accompany the breakfast , no heart in any of it really......

The jurys out ??????

Visited this establishment on Sunday afternoon and while the food was passable the service was abysmal. We encountered the following issues -

1. We ordered pre-nibbles, which was a small slice of bread each, with butter and a dip. We had to ask for a spoon for the dip as they only provided one tray for the bread  and one pot for the dip. There was no way everyone could could reach the pot for the dip without a spoon to put some of the dip onto your plate.

2. Before we had finished the pre-nibbles the main courses arrived at the table. We had to move the pre-nibble plates to the side. We certainly hadn't taken long to eat the pre-nibbles and it would have better if the plates had been removed before bringing the mains to the table.  

3. We had to ask 4 times for water before a managerial looking person arrived with a bottle of water for us. No apolgy given!

4. We had to ask for salt and pepper cellars as there were none on our table. We were brought the cellars but we had to ask for another salt cellar as there was nothing in the cellar that they brought. Again, no apology given!

5. We weren't asked if anyone wanted any condiments, such as sauces or vinegar.

6. When the plates for the mains were being taken away a knife fell from one of the plates on to the floor. This knife was still on the floor when we left.

7. After the mains, we ordered 6 coffees. We had to ask for these coffees 3 times before they arrived, more than 30 minutes after we first ordered them. Again no apology received for the delay|

8. To top it all when we got the final bill a 10% service charge had been added. There was nothing to indicate whether or not this was discretionary and I was going to query it with the staff. Other members of my group didn't want to cause a fuss in the restaurant so we reluctantly paid the service charge.

9. I sent an e-mail to the establishment through their website detailing the above issues and haven't heard a thing.  

I certainly think the owner/manager needs to have a good look at the details of the issues we encountered. Good service doesn't seem to something that they take seriously and I certainly won't be returning.

Terrible Service

We were at the sun hotel for a breakfast 4 adults 2 children food was fantastic as was the staff and the gentleman waiter could not do enough for us and must be congratulated 
And it was good to see that it’s dog friendly as well

Birthday breakfast

Check in ok, showed to our room which initially had the wow factor.
Bed really comfortable, shwer room clean ish.
Irioning board needs attention.
Now...... The coffe/tea tray was DIDGUSTING, black hair x 3, filthy tray, cafetiere still had coffee from previous guests. Breakfast table set up but still had remnants from previous peopl, That was that first morning.
Got back from being out all day until late at night. Bed not made, towels not replaced, coffee tray still not cleaned, cafetiere still not emptied, cups not cleaned, but hey we got two caramel wafers 😊.  So no return visit from us. Staff friendly.

mathew shaw was a very polite,
lovely and hansom young lady however i did notice a bite was taken out of my sandwich.
give a promotion to mathew very good service except for the half eating sandwich!.

where’s the rest of my sandwich ?

Living locally we have visited The Sun Inn many times, however we wont be in a hurry to go back.  Despite having booked well in advance and phoning the day before to confirm our booking when we turned up there were blank faces among the very young looking staff. We were then shown to a table which hadnt been cleaned properly and we had to ask for it to be cleaned. Even the menus were quite grubby and although it was a Saturday evening it was a lunch menu with very poor choices.  It was also very expensive, £9 for a starter of soup and the bowl was only half full.  3 of our 6 mains had to be sent back, all of which were undercooked.  The whole evening was a shambles with drinks orders, sides and desserts, not turning up and having to be re-ordered.  Even the bill was wrong and we were getting overcharged. We have noticed that each time we have visited this restaurant there is always different waiting staff, maybe not a good sign. A very expensive mediocre pub meal, haphazard service and a 10% service charge slapped on to the bill. We would certainly not describe this as a Gastro pub anymore, it used to be but definitely isnt now - apart from the prices!   So disappointed.

Expensive and going downhill fast

We had a family event at the Sun Inn recently, involving dinner and drinks.  They have a nice menu and the food served was tasty. Service was excellent with the hard working staff doing really well to serve a large group whilst keeping everyone’s drinks topped up.  

A lovely place to go for dinner or a family event.

Great night out

Staying at the caravan park adjacent we decided to have evening dinner here.on arrival the staff were attentive showing us to our seats . we we're given lunch menus and told same menu in use at night apart from sandwiches.
The choice is very limited about 7-8 on starters and main courses. Draft lager has 2 choices. and at £6.00 per pint overpriced
Starter of asparagus was presented well and tasty.
Main courses are small and overpriced ,as is the cheeseboard at £11.00 so declined the offer of dessert.
Disappointed in this place so don't think we will return
