The Townhouse Hotel

Now called the Townhouse this is basically a pub with some rooms in various big extensions out the back.
Family room was big with 2 bedrooms, a small kitchen area, and a shower room. Unfortunately half the light bulbs weren't working and those that were were quite dim. The shower room was clean but had no towel rails or hooks, no toilet roll holder, no mirror. However the guy there was very helpful and went to homebase to get us a bulb. Breakfast was OK. If the rooms were done up properly it could be good.

Could do with a proper refurb

Stopped for a night on walking trip staff were friendly and breakfast was fine . 
Unfortunately the room was pretty grotty. It was too small for two beds and  at the back of the building in a not quite finished section. The window wouldn't close and the toilet door wouldn't shut and the toilet itself was far too close to the shower .
 
It was cheap however so I suppose you get what you pay for although 
the same price at the Premier inn was available .
The pub is usually decent for a chat with the locals but unfortunately this night it was full of  20 somethings unable to talk without screaming and swearing.

We did have a lovely walk in the Criffel hills and at the end of the day it was a place to sleep

Not great

This little hotel doesn't attempt to be chintsy but you'll get a warm welcome and all the help they can give.  While the accommodation is basic, the staff are so accomodating and friendly it makes the  stay memorable.  I'd stay here over a travel lodge every time.  I stayed with my son for 3 nights on a return trip to Dumfries.  My son kept saying what a comfortable bed he had and i agree.  I had 3 great nights' sleep. 

When i arrived the barmaid Nicky was so welcoming anyone would have thought I was a regular.  We felt right at home.  The manager Barry does everything - works all day and night - and always with a smile.  His breakfasts are brilliant!   That man works so hard to meet your needs.

I would definitely recommend as a cheap and cheerful place to stay when visiting Dumfries.  Great value for money and the staff have so much character, including the cleaner who was lovely, that it makes up for the basic decor. I'll be going back on my next trip 

No frills but fantastic

Stayed here for one night while visiting friends in Dumfries. Stayed in the family room. This hotel is very good value for money- the room was spotlessly clean and quiet, spacious, has a very good shower and tea/coffee making facilities. Staff were friendly and helpful. The decor is a little dated but not offensive. Would I stay here again? Yes!

Good value for money

We stayed overnight as a family in the apartment. Spacious, with a little kitchen making it perfect for longer stays. Just was lovely. The bunk beds are a little shaky, but the kids loved it and slept well (there was a separate bedroom with two singles which clearly didn't hold the same attraction). Double bed was comfortable. Plenty of off street parking behind the hotel.  

Yes the decor may be a little shabby, but an effort has clearly been made to make the place comfortable and nice, and I appreciate that. Bathroom looks very new. There's a good selection of tea and coffee, and we were offered a breakfast and also pointed to the local Aldi across the road, no hard sell and nothing was too much trouble. We would stay again, thank you very much

Lovely little hotel

Booked this as a place to sleep while visiting relatives. At £150 for 3 nights with full breakfast for myself and my son, this was much cheaper than most other hotels or B&B's in Dumfries This isn't a fancy hotel but it doesn't claim to be. The room we had was clean and spacious and the beds were perfectly comfortable. We were well looked after by staff and in particular Barry, who was always willing to help. It met our needs perfectly and very happy to return next year.

Friendly and cheap

Excessive cost; lack of breakfast in the morning; lack of a restaurant; it's far from the center; insufficient electric light and lack of light on many beds: so in the evening you can't read; lack the elevator; there's no real reception: you go to the pub underneath, but in the morning it's closed. Wi-Fi doesn't work: they say there is in some rooms but it's not even in the type of reception.
