Brilliant hotel/pub...staff were really friendly, couldn't ask for any more and nothing was too much trouble. Great location for the price and would 100% come back and stay here. Easy to find and very accommodating, couldn't ask for a better replace to stay close to the shambles

Great location and hotel

Absolutely excellent service and food.
Karin and Karo are wonderful, Karin served the drinks with a smile and Karo did the food and was very understanding regarding my diet issue.
Hubby had the lunchtime special beef burger and chips £5 and said it was perfect and very tasty, I had the chicken burger and chips £5 which was also very tasty.
An excellent place to eat and drink and they have a nice outdoor seating area at the back next to the river which looks great.
We'll be back.

We booked a stay at The Watergate Inn using a gift voucher.
We received an email to say that we would be self-checking in to the room and were given a code so we could access the lock box which had the room key in. When we got there the lock box was open and set to the code which was used to open the door.
Our room was on the ground floor right next to the outside door which had no lock whatsoever so there was the issue of safety. The room lock was terrible, it was not fitted correctly so there was a lot of wiggle room between the latch and the section of metal which stops the door from opening. A screw was also holding the metal section of the lock in place (shown in image). The floors were unhoovered, there was make up and holes on the pillows, hairs in the bed. The shower was unclean and missing the waste section (shown in image). The bathroom stunk of blocked drains.
As we were only in York for one night, we made the decision to book another place to stay instead of spending our evening in a terrible room. 
We raised a complaint, however, the Watergate Inn were unwilling to provide a refund. 
Avoid this place!

Terrible place to stay!

Theatre visit to York so we needed a central, cheap and straightforward bed for the night, which the Watergate offers. No nonsense, no fuss. Staff were welcoming and helpful. The car park is tucked round the back, accessed by a very narrow entrance directly off the city centre roads - beware, your parking sensors will go mental! Good use of key pad codes for accessing the car park and rooms, means you can come and go as you please, despite it being right in the middle of the city centre. Sadly the bar closes at 10 pm so we missed the after show drink and we skipped breakfast, which is cooked in a little cafe opposite and brought in to be served in the bar. No restaurant. Rooms are small, clean and tidy, tightly stacked alongside each other so it's a little noisy. Very old building so there are no right angles anywhere, which adds to the charm. Good value and would definitely use again for its convenience rather than comfort and relaxation.

Great value for theatre visit

Requested rooms close together, not done. Eventually changed so we close only to find out belongings had been removed from our room and our room given to someone else!
The property is not managed 24/7 so it was exceptionally fortunate that we discovered this before the bar closed. 
Given a different room with a new key. Our bag had been put in lost property!
Somebody came to talk to us and offered to sort it out the following morning, all the time knowing that he wouldn’t even be working the next morning. 
I have emailed several times with no response. 
Badly managed and not worth the money!

Appalling

Stayed for one night midweek.
It's a great location and walkable to everywhere in York.
The room itself was basic but the amenities were suitable for me (kettle, tea making facilities, hairdryer etc.  There was a TV but I didn't actually use it so couldn't tell you if it worked or not).
I'd read some bad reviews and didn't have high expectations tbh but on a quick glance the room seemed decent enough.  It was small but I was travelling solo so was fine. 
The lights all worked and the bedding, sheets and towels were clean.
The room was ground floor and opposite a shisha type place of which there was a lot of noise from til about 1am although I was still up anyway.
The other guests were quiet but I could here general moving around above me from about 5am so I didn't get a great night's sleep.  But it's an old building in York, so hey-ho.
Being ground floor I had to keep the blind permanently closed from the place opposite for privacy so the room was quite dim.  There was no curtain.

As for the bathroom, it was a little bit grotty.  The shower had mould along the ceiling and the shower tray and on the door edges.   The shower wall clip was broken so I had to awkwardly hand hold the shower head to shower.   The shower head tube looked dirty and there was a very questionable stain and matter on the toilet seat that I had to clean before I could use it.
There was also no plug in the tiny sink.
All in all I got what I expected.  It was cheap, a bit rough round the edges but did me for a night.    I wouldn't stay there more than one though.

Slightly grotty, basic, passable for a night

Where do start with this ramshackle , arrived at this place,when we checked the mattress it was filthy and stained with god knows what,we complained immediately to be fair they got a new one installed, but that was only the start of things to come, television was use less, very noisy from the owners restaurant opposite the rooms,thread bare duvet,dusty room, mouldy bathroom, towels where stinking of vegetable oil, having to ask for toilet rolls,room above was in use we could hear them literally using the lio!!!!! DO NOT STAY HERE, the place is absolutely disgusting


Dirty mattres

My friend and I had lunch here today which was freshly cooked and delicious. The girl who served us, who I am assuming was the landlady was lovely. Very cheerful and friendly. I understand they have not been there long but so far are doing an excellent job. Will definitely be back and next time we stay over in York this is where we will choose. Keep up the good work.

Booked a specific room that wasn't available; we were not informed of this before arriving and instead "upgraded" to a smoky & noisy room - no thanks! Location is central & walkable but it's not worth the rooms, particularly with a shisha joint oppposite. Find somewhere else to stay.

AMAZING food.... we had the gzu and shawarma. It was absolutely delicious and the prices are a total bargain. Big portions and only around £10 a dish. Would be at least £15 anywhere else. We loved the atmosphere too and the staff were lovely. Definitely will be back asap
