Set in a very peaceful, hilly farming area this very quirky hotel, consisting of a number of linked, restored farmhouses, is more shabby than shabby-chic and is too far off the beaten track for holidaymaker traffic.

The atmosphere is very informal, with very charming and helpful staff. The comfy reception lounge, with well-priced, self-serve, honesty minibar, is the only place with a wi-fi signal.

Accommodation is unconventional; our family suite comprised two rooms containing three single beds and a double bed, with shower room and separate toilet booth. Some might describe furniture as rustic and and in-theme but I would describe as salvaged and random, with some coloured throws, sails, covers to add some cheer. 

Disturbingly, our toilet booth had no hand basin, so we had to navigate through three doors to get to hand basin in the shower room. Next to the (comfortable) double bed was a single-glazed door (lockable) leading onto a communal kitchen / lounge / playroom area. Luckily, on this occasion, there were no groups of friends sharing a bottle of wine or two before going to bed! If ever a doorway needed blocking up!

Cleanliness was generally good, although the bird poo on the covered outdoor steps leading to our suite was off putting, as was the floor rag left outside our door - forgotten by cleaner? Makeshift doormat??

Dinner was served in the separate mansion (sic, actually an anonymous  two storey building), which is reached by walking up some steps cut into the steep hill.  As we approached the ‘mansion’, it was totally uninviting, with no signage to indicate the actual dining area - curiously, I was reminded of the abandoned house in the closing scenes of the Blair Witch Project.

The dining area, with library lounge at one end, was airy and spacious, but more canteen than restaurant, with moth eaten-table cloths.

The 3 course set-menu meal (€28 pp) came with no options (other tan kids’ meal). While service was charming, the dinner was bland (rustic?), meagre and disappointing; the lowlights being the roast duck served cold and the local Chardonnay served warm - in France!

The walk back down to our room after dinner was adventurous in pitch black - thank goodness for iPhone flashlight function. 

We enjoyed a good night’s sleep; thankfully it was an unseasonably cool night - there were no outdoor windows in the main bedroom.

Breakfast on covered terrace was superb and left us in a good mood following the challenges of night before.
 
Full marks for unconventional but needs to be better. This location would suit as a team building exercise venue, or a get together for an extended family or rustic wedding but not as tourist base or overnight stop.

I want to love this place, but …..

I have traveled to this hotel on three occasions with small groups of people as we were studying the battlefield where Ceasar defeated the Celt army in 52 BC.   The experience on each occassion has been increadible.   We always use the halfboard option and plan on dinner at the hotel.   The local cheeses, meats and wine are top notch!!!   The views, the scenery and experience are one of a uintenssetial French countryside setting.  A trying unique experience!!!

Phenomenal hotel experience

We stayed here - a family of 4 - daughter 15 and son 11 for 2 nights on the 4th and 5th August 2016. We drove from the Eurotunnel - it was a wet day unfortunately. On arrival we were greeted by a very pleasant lady and once checked in she took us to our apartment and showed us the facilities we could use. We had a double bedroom on one floor and a twin bedroom upstairs. It was immaculate with the most stunning view of the countryside. We cooked food in the kitchen that we had brought with us on the first night. The next day we had a delicious breakfast of croissants, breads, eggs, cheeses, ham, fruit and jams. We then headed out to find Semur en auxois - this is a lovely village - we went in the church and had a wander round. We found out there was going to be a festival there that evening. We went to visit Fontenay Abbey but didn't pay to go in - it was a lovely setting. We went back to the apartment for a while then headed out again to visit the village from Hotel Chocolat - Flavigny sur Ozerain - beautiful and back to Semur en auxois for the festival and meal. On the Saturday we got up - had another amazing breakfast before our drive to Lake Garda. The tranquillity, beauty and cleanliness was wonderful. We would definitely return.

Stunning, Tranquil - highly recommended

We spent a wonderful week here.  We couldn't have been better looked after by the team that  runs this maison hoteliere. The buildings of warm grey stone nestle into the hillside surrounded by wild gardens where tiny rabbits play.   There are rooms with patios or garden spaces  at various levels. Our room was lovely, with exposed stone and beautiful stained glass, and really comfy beds. A copious breakfast is served on the terrace.  There are spacious public rooms, comfortably furnished with amazing expanses of bookshelf. You would never be short of something to read! There are lots of steps and stairs, some stone and some elegant circular wrought iron staircases.
There is a  restaurant at the top of the hill which is part of the establishment, and which  serves a Table d'Hote  menu and is quite splendid. Good food and lovely views over the gentle Burgundian landscape!  
We would happily return to this lovely place. It is well placed for exploring such places as Semur-en- Auxois and the Abbey of Fontenay.

a magical place

We had travelled to the area to visit Flavigny-sur-Ozerain where the film Chocolat was partly filmed.  Le Verger is ideally situated and we were charmed by the quaint village on arrival.  We stayed in the family appartment which was well furnished, comfortable and perfect for the 3 of us.  We were not quite sure what to expect as we had received an email after booking the accommodation advising that the nearest restaurant was 9k away and asking if we would like dinner on site.  So it was with much trepidation that we climbed the hill to the restaurant.  Despite initial doubts as to whether there was actually a restaurant there at all (no signs) we need not have worried and went on to enjoy a delicious 4 course set menu of fresh local produce in a tranquil setting with glorious views. Breakfast served at the Verger the following morning was equally as good. We would definitely return if visiting the area again.

In search of Chocolat

We couldn't believe where we were headed, up & down & up again.  But Le Verger was well worth this trip.  Not only is it in the center of everything: Flavigny (without Judi Dench), Alesis, Fontenay Abbey, Semur-en-Auxois) but it was the epitome of excellence.  The hosts were extremely friendly & helpful & speak good English, the food wonderful (they have a modern separate dining room with an extremely large library), the room confortable w a modern shower.  I can't rate it high enough!
