Here are some points about what this hotel has to offer : 
- rooms - clean , but not cozy. There is a kitchenette corner as well. The fridge was the most noisy that I've ever seen. During night, I could hear it more than the AC . By the way , The AC is right above the bed, after 4 nights I started to have problems with my sinuses, and I am not a very sensitive person. 
- food - I couldn't make a better choice than NOT choosing the all inclusive option. Breakfast was OK, but I wouldn't recommend the diner. Some of the food was saved and reused from the previous days. 
- bar - well... The bartender, which I didn't see smiling in six days, told me that I cannot order any of the drinks thet they have because I am not an all inclusive customer . LOL. So, I had to choose between 2 beer brands, a vinegar-wine, and no coffee. You can imagine : I went somewhere else. 
- personnel - excepting the bartender, they were polite and friendly, but they seem overworked. 
- pool - it is a joke - two small pools, facing the road, and overcrowded. 
- Wi-Fi - It works sometimes , only in the bar area 
- location - there is a small beach nearby. There is very little sand and the sea entrance is from big rocks. There is also a guy trying to rent some overused sunbeds for 5 euros the day. We choose the sand :)   I wouldn't recommend this beach to families with children. We went to Platanias, the village nearby to enjoy the sea and the sand . The bus costs 1 euro and the taxi 5-6 euros. There are also good options to eat some authentic Cretan food , which I find delicious.
I would recommend this hotel only to people that are there to visit Crete ( what a beautiful island!) , or have a car and don't plan to spend too much time to the hotel .

There are better choices in Crete, even for this money

We really enjoyed this hotel. The rooms were clean, the buffet was very fresh and included many traditional dishes and good salads. The staff reacted quickly and was very helpful. The nearby beach is not so good, especially not for children, better to take a bus or cab to some of the sandy beaches. We went to the beach in Rethymnon. A cab to Rethymnon was 12 euro, a bus ticket 1.20.

Pleasant staff, good service, good food

I stayed here in August 2013 with my partner and his daughter who is 12. I know the area well as my parents lived in the area for nearly 10 years. The hotel staff were lovely and the food which is buffet style but fresh and with lots of seafood and variety, there's local breads, soup, fish chicken, moussaka and salads and fruits. The place is a little dated but perfectly clean and comfortable and fresh towels and linen daily.
The pool area is nice and its a couple of minutes to the local beach which is just over the road. Buses run regularly (its about 15-20 mins to Rethymnon and there is a shop next door for anything else you may want such as gifts etc. The only thing I didn't like was the hard drinking Russians who proceeded to ignore their children and just get hammered daily, unfortunately this is in most hotels and most med resorts so not a lot you can do about it but to be fair to the staff they did have a word and told them to behave which was good.

This is a nice hotel and for £1400 all in for 3 of us it's well worth the money, if you want 5 star pay double and go over the road to the El Greco. This place is well located and good value.

Good for the money

First off, I can't compare Alkion with other Cretan hotels as this is the only one I was in. However, after reading reviews of other hotels here on tripadvisor, I think it deserves 3 or 4 stars.

I. Things I didn't like
--------------------------
- Dog from the neighbourhood barking on hotel guests. This only applies to the western side of the hotel.
- All rooms (except for bathroom) are poorly lit. If you want to read tiny text, you have to go to the bathroom which has a bright fluorescent light.
- The bathroom is triangular and very small (2m2). ... A word of advice: It you attempt to sit on the toilet at night without switching the lights on (not to disturb those who sleep in the bedroom), you will strike the basin with your head. ... Recall my advice when you do (unless you fall unconscious)!
- Beds are short (190 cm or less).
- There are no quilts, just thin sheets. However, if you don't pay for air conditioning, it becomes fairly hot at night and you don't even need the sheet.
- We had a studio with a kitchenette but it wasn't properly equipped. I don't understand why it is there at all, given the hotel policy is not to allow guests brining their own food to the hotel..
- Breakfast choice was the same every day. There were no cakes for dinner. ..Honestly, I can live without that.

II. Things I did like
------------------------
- Receptionists and room maids.
- Dinners. .. I am not too picky though.
- Rooms, except for the bathroom, were quite large.
- Sliding French doors (1 glass and 1 opaque) + heavy curtains. As a result, early morning sunlight will not wake you up.
- Restaurant staff.
- Car park was not the largest in the world but large enough to house all 7 cars :-).
- Apart from the dog, the area is relatively quiet. You can hear cars from the highway but that's not something that would bother me. There was virtually no night life (in September) and I could have gone to bed at 10pm without worrying about loud music.

To summarise, if you are short, not too picky about food, and prefer mild traffic noise over discos late at night, this hotel will suit you.

Alkyon (aka Alkion), Pigis Kampos, Crete

This hotel has one major flaw - it is located between 2 roads. One is the biggest higway in Crete (they call it national highway) and second one is the old road which was used before highway was built. Long story short - it is noisy. Higway can be heard 24/7 and the smaller road during daylight only. Highway is on the back side of the hotel so it is acceptable as long as you keep your windows closed. But the other one is right in front of the hotel as well as hotel restaurant and the pool (distance about 2 meters from the pool). So during all your meals and swimming in pool / sunbathing you can hear all the cars and trucks passing by. And they do about 50-70 kph so you certainly will not miss this noise.
To get to the beach you need to go across this "smaller" road and walk about 200 meters. There are sunbeds+umbrellas at the price of 6 EUR per day.
Apart from noise - hotel is clean, staff very friendly (especially bartender George), food ok but because it is not some 5 star hotel you can not expect something extraordinary.

So in the end I would not go back to this hotel again. I would choose something quieter and a bit bigger in order to get more various food to choose from.
