I thought I had lucked out when I arrived at Aka Casa, it's absolutely beautiful. Whoever designed it has exquisite taste and it has a perfect balance of traditional and modern decor with rustic Thai touches. Truly gorgeous. The staff are also very welcoming, and warm. However, please note that Aka Casa is essentially a large house turned into a hotel, there are only 4 bedrooms.... 2 have a shared bathroom, the one I was in had it's own bathroom and then there's the large suite downstairs which has an outdoor bathroom with jacuzzi. All the rooms have doors opening directly onto the 'lobby'/dining area and so during the day you will be able to hear all and any conversations in these communal areas plus the gentle music played throughout the day. None of this bothered me at all, what did matter to me and ensured that I only spent one night there was the very odd decision to design all the rooms (apart from the large suite) with blinds that don't open! The result being that even on a bright sunny day you need to have your lights on in your room or sit in the the dark, with absolutely no view out! Given the stunning lush greenery surrounding the hotel this decision is really perplexing. Another odd quirk of Aka Casa is that there is only food served from 9am - 11am, and the choices on the menu are 4-5 fixed odd options for breakfast... shrimp wonton, minced chicken with spaghetti, pork rice and 1 or 2 other jarring combinations. I'm someone who loves a hearty breakfast and often have lamb chops and mashed potatoes for breakfast(!!) and think nothing of it, but even for me these options were quite strange and very limited. There was no mention at all of eggs or bread on the menu... standard choices for most people in the morning. Finally another issue that made Aka Casa unworkable for me was the fact that it is down a dark alley which at night, being a woman on my own, was not very appealing. I ended up going to bed on my only night there without having any dinner as nothing was available after 11am in the morning, and I just didn't feel brave enough to walk down the dark alley and look for restaurants. I'm sure I would have been totally fine and I could have asked the man who secures the property at night to call a taxi for me, but it all felt like too much hassle when all I really fancied was a nice light soup in my room. Despite these niggles I really genuinely did enjoy my time at Aka Casa, it has an amazing healing energy there and is very still and super quiet at night, the beds are lovely and comfy and the showers are superb! Really hot and great water pressure! The internet is also really fast and reliable, and the design of the whole place and all the rooms is utterly stunning, so tasteful! I also really appreciated the relaxed vibe of the whole place that makes you feel as though you're staying in a rich friends house, rather than a hotel. However, I really would urge the owner/manager to make a few tweaks so that this place can become the gem it deserves to be: 1) Please remove the blinds from the windows or make them so that they can be opened so guests can have light and a view out. 2) Guests really need food served throughout the day, breakfast should be from 8am to 11am, (9am is too late as most guests want to get up and out early to see the sights of Chiangmai). Also please reconsider the options on the menu, they are too limited. It's fine if you are unable to serve lunch, but as your hotel is quite isolated you should serve some food in the evenings... even if it's just a light offering of salads and soups which would be easy for your staff to whip up. 3) You have a REAL issue with mosquito's that needs to be seriously looked at. I tried to stay in your downstairs suite, but was literally attacked constantly by about 20 mosquito's! This problem is not helped by all the still water you have around the property which is a perfect breeding ground for mossies! Once these changes have been made, I would absolutely love to return and stay longer this time!!
