Bamboo 99 Old City Guesthouse

I stayed in a basic single room with shared bathroom. It was clean and comfortable. Staff is friendly. The rooms have a little bureau and a fan. There's a common area but lacks of entertaining stuff (books, games, TV, table, chairs), so nobody uses it. 

Room was more than fine, toilets could of been cleaner, lovely staff good location, nice atmosphere, was quite quiet when we were there which was nice but did not reflect th e standard as I thought it was a really nice guest house and great value

Basic accommodation but good enough 

Good stay

Great location and price but cheap basic rooms with not the best shared facilities or carpet...

You get what you pay for but would say we did get a clean bed but it's not that comfy and the rooms are so small there like a sauna even with the fan it's hard to sleep unless you drink loads of Chang!

We were sold on the location it's in the middle of the old city and also over the road to Zoe in Yellow & for the cost we did also book again from our return from Pai.


Good Location

Firstly, I do not normally write reviews but felt compelled in this case.

The location is great, centrally located in Chiang Mai. The rooms are basic, clean enough and fine to get a night's sleep. We stayed in both a fan room and an A/C room, the beds in the Fan room however were terrible, the mattress was basically resting on a bit of thin plyboard which was broken in a few places leaving the matress to sink through (Both Beds). 

The shared bathrooms are fine, toilet paper was provided when we stayed. The big "99Baht" signs everywhere are misleading however, nothing is really 99B unless certain conditions are met.

We accidentally locked the key in the room one night however as the locks are the push button on the inside type, it was around 10pm, and we were told that we would have to pay a 500B fine for knocking on the night manager's room, then that we would have to pay for a locksmith in the morning, in addition to another room for the night which was more than double the cost of our room. All because they didn't have a spare key. How can you not have a spare key? Eventually we managed to force the window open as the locks aren't great and get in to get the key. We felt that the owners were not very helpful at all for a genuine accident which is simple to make.

In addition to this, we rented a scooter (which wasn't 99 Baht), for my girlfriend to take to Pai, whilst I got a bigger bike, we agreed upon a price and to take it for 8 days, however later decided to take 1 big bike between us. We went back to ask if we could get a refund, as we had only had it for one day. We did not expect a full refund, but thought considering we had only had it for one day, and would not be using the bike they would offer a partial refund and then be able to rent it out to someone else. This was not the case however and the (American) owner told us that they had a "No Refunds" policy and there was nothing he could do about it. We did not feel like valued customers at all. We parked the scooter at the shop we rented the big bike from and left it there for over a week unused, but still had to pay full price. A note on the scooter, back brake lever was bent, he said "I actually find it helps you grip it better", yeah good one buddy (y). In addition to this the condition in general was pretty poor, brakes not great etc so would not advise to take any distance.

On a positive note, the staff when we returned the scooter after our trip were very polite and courteous and understanding of our issue. It was just the owner that gave us very negative opinion.

Terrible Customer Service

I've stayed at many "budget" places, but this one is really bad. 1. No window to the outside=unbearably hot, 2. window to the hallway with no screen allowing people to look in at you or worse, reach in, 3. no 24 hour reception in case you need to check out early or late and want your key deposit back. The room I booked was a double fan room- I am used to the heat since I've lived in SE Asia for 3 years and have no air-con at home- but this room had no windows to the outside so you couldn't get any air flow in which made it so unbearably hot inside. Also, the windows in the room led into the hallway and the windows didn't have any screens or tinting on them, so if you wanted the window open to allow some air flow from the hallway, you had to also allow people to be able to look and reach in the window at you while you lay there shirtless since it's so hot. The rooms have turf on the floor and the bathrooms, showers and sinks are all shared. These things were not mentioned when I booked the room. One of the showers did have hot water though so that was better. When we got home in the evening after dinner, we noticed that there was no one at the reception in the lobby and instead there was a note that said "Reception hours 8am-8pm, After Hours Emergency cost 500Baht." However, if there was an emergency there was no number or information of how to contact someone. I tried to call the numbers listed for the hostel both online as well as from our booking and no one answered, I called one of the numbers from a business card at the desk and no answer. We had to check out the next morning at 4am in order to catch a flight and we had paid a key deposit and were not informed of this "after hours emergency" or the fact that there is no one in the reception from 8pm-8am. This was a 99Baht room that required a 200Baht key deposit. So that would mean that we would be paying triple for this horrible room because there was no way to get the key deposit back.
