Hotel "Old Vienna"

This hotel is situated on the bank of River Dnieper. The view is incredebly picturesque. We were observing a sunset. The scenery is amazing. 
Staff is very welcome and kind-hearted. We felt us as if at home. Rooms are very comfortable, warm and are equiped with everything necessary.
There is also a swimming pool, a terrace and even Russian sauna Bath.
I spent geat weekends there with my husband. 
We'll also celebrate New Year there. There will be a very interesting New Year programme. My friends celebrated there last year, they were excited...and we decided to celebrate this year together. 
Who doesn't know where to spend spare time, come to Old Vienna!!!
This is a great hotel without disadvantages, believe me)))

Arrived to this beautiful place on a day, where the city was boiling in 28 degrees. We went to this charming place on the Dnepr river for lunch. We went to one of the two restaurants facing the river. Excelent salad and good service. We were reluctant to leave this place with fresh air and wonderful surroundings, so we spent the aftenoon on the terrace. Late we went to the other restaurant, which was more like a club. A swimmingpool was surrounded by a open bar and restaurant facing the river. We all had starters and my guests had grilled salmon as main course. I had veal steak  on the bone with a fantastic sauce an some homemade spicy potatoes. Perfect. What was meant to be a lunch ended with a 12 hours stay in tho very pleasent surroundings. For my next visit I will book this hotel, rather than stay in the center of Kiev

Old Vienna is a lovely private hotel located outside of the city in the resort area of Koncha-Zaspa. It is 5-storied hotel with its access to the beach. Wonderful location for nice evening dinner when you wish a beautiful nature scene, and enjoy the atmosphere. Service is slow but always is nice. Rooms are quite new with waterfrint views. Rooms ae big.

Comfortable cozy hotel on the riverbank

The best hotel I've ever seen

Let's start with the positive. As others have remarked, the hotel is in a beautiful location, right on the banks of a tributory of the Dneiper, with glorious views both day and night (see pictures). It is around 10 miles out of Kiev - but taxis are cheap and, outside of the rush hour the journey is an easy one. The pool and patio area is large with plenty of loungers and the like (see picture). The staff are all friendly and willing - although not all of them speak the level of English that their job demands. The river-facing part of the hotel is far and away the better side and should be very quiet and restful - but it is not. See the major sin of commission below.

Most of the problems with the hotel are really sins of omission, not sins of commission - but they are still problems that could and should be solved. 

The one major sin of commission is to do with the background music - which was neither background nor music by my standards. From breakast through to the late evening there was no escaping the loud electronic rhythm and the sound of caterwauling singers whose voices made up in volume what they lacked in talent. Of course, it is never going to be possible to find music to suit all tastes, but, as I discovered from discussion with the staff, the music was decided by the hotel's director - who presumably likes this kind of music. On a number of occasions, when my wife and I were the only guests in the area, I asked for the music to be turned off - which resulted in a look of horror on the faces of the staff that I should be asking them to go against the wishes of the director aka the Commisar. The old Soviet command economy still has its shadows in Ukraine. I did ask to speak to the director but he was not in evidence (although his nasty music was still played). The Old Vienna Hotel management seems not to realise that it is what the guests want that matters - not what the director wants. 

The major sin of omisson was the lack of any hotel information of any sort, apart from a small sheet of rules that warned about the consequences of such transgressions as carrying weapons, ammunition and explosives. Plus the very worrying warning, "Jumping from the Pantone drunk, you undertake all associated risks". The only Pantone I know about is a colour matching system and nobody would be able to jump into or out of that. There was no other hotel information at all - nothing about the way in which the strange balcony door worked or how the safe, with its two keys and a keypad, was supposed to operate. 

Maybe the biggest sin of omission was the failure to warn guests that the plumbing was to Greek standards, which meant the the lavatories, apparently of normal western standards, would block should as much as a couple of sheets of toilet paper be introduced into the bowl. The used paper had to be placed into a noiseome pedal bin, to the delight of the local flies. Since the bowl was not properly plumbed to the soil-pipe, such blockages resulted in a flooded floor as the overflow poured out of the leaking joint. 

Hotel guests can cope with these eccenticities if they are told about them but in the absence of signage or instructions (in any language) how will they know what they have to do? The only signs that ever appeared were in Ukrainian (see picture) - and they were rare. We British tend to denigrate ourselves for our lack of lingustic skills but, let's face it, we have been lucky enough to be brought up to speak the world's most important language and, by default, now the world's lingua franca. Any hotel or other venue that does not have signs in English is being very shortsighted. 

Other sins of omission included the lack of a lift - or to be precise, a working lift. The lft was out of order when we arrived and still out of order when we left. Four flights of stairs with luggage is not fun when you are in your seventies. Enquiries as to when the lift would be working were met with stares of blank amazement. "The lift is broken" was the standard reply and my supplementary question, "So when will it be fixed?" was met by looks of incomprehension. The idea that something broken should be fixed did not seem to be something that entered the staffs' minds.

The stairs themselves had a handrail that was too close to the stairs so that one's fingers were trapped where the handrail passed the upper flight of stairs. A bad bit of design that could have been fixed in probably an hour.

Another problem of poor design was that of the room fridge that had been installed in a cupboard that was innocent of any ventilation. The cupboard was so hot it could have served as an over and the fridge, of course, having no way to get rid of its heat, did not do its job of cooling until I propped the cupboard door open. Ten minutes with an electric drill would have solved the problem. 

Others have spoken of the quality of the food and, to be fair, the main menu was quite good if the combinations were a little strange. Gaspacho with prawns, borsch with ribs and hamburgers with mashed potato were not specially attractive to me although maybe, like the awful music, these were the director's preferences.

The breakfast menu was poor by British standards. Cold meat, cheese and raw vegetables might appeal to the Germans but not to the British. The hot choice was confined to overdone omelette slices, rice or grits, and pallid sausages. The likes of mushrooms, bacon, baked beans, black pudding, hash browns and grilled tomatoes were all conspicious by their absence. 

In short, not a bad hotel for the money - but it could be so much better with a bit of effort (and maybe a different director).
