We had a nine night stay in Villa 6 this month with friends from Brisbane. On the plus side, the property is a little oasis of French Provence approached via a delightful citrus grove with pencil pines and rustic exterior. Inside, the villa is spacious, well laid out, well furnished, clean and tidy. French doors from the main bedroom led into the courtyard. It is centrally situated within easy reach of the Adelaide CBD and main attractions. Free wireless internet was provided.

On the down side, the villa falls short of its ‘luxury’ tag.  Facilities you would expect to see in truly 5-star accommodation include a full range of toiletries in bathrooms, external telephone, Foxtel, a functional cooker (we had to download a picture of the cooker controls from the internet before it could be used) and a complete set of matching crockery (no cups and saucers, cereal bowls or teapot although the last two items were provided on request: thank you Mary, you were a life saver). A greeting on arrival would have been nice rather than having to let ourselves in with a key found under the mat.  

On the maintenance side, the return air vent of the air conditioning was blocked and had not been serviced for some time, the tumble drier filter was completely choked , there were large cracks in the wall of the second bedroom and paint work was in a poor state in some areas (use of the terms “rustic” and charming” does not excuse poor maintenance). There was no table lamp in the main lounge so we had to contend with bright down lights (already pointed out by another reviewer). The table lamps in the second bedroom shown on the Mallyons website had been replaced by less satisfactory standard lamps. As the owners live over 300 km away and do not use an agent, there was no one onsite to deal with any issues which arose.

Although we had a great time in Adelaide, the owners will need to re-invest in this rental, both equipment and maintenance, to bring it up to an acceptable standard. We left, disappointed, putting the key under the mat as requested.

Charming but tired

We stayed here for nine days on our first visit to Adelaide. The property (number 8) was a french style villa added on to an older villa. The older part contained the bedrooms, bathroom and living room, while the newer part was one enormous room containing kitchen and dining areas, and with french doors leading outside. Outside was a courtyard with table and chairs set under a large tree - very French. The property was well furnished and clean and we had a comfortable stay. The property was very handy to the CBD - only a 15 minute walk, and mostly through parks.  In the other direction, the suburb of Norwood was only a 20 - 30 minute walk and there were supermarkets, restaurants and shops. The only problem area was the road noise in the bedrooms. Being at the back of the property, the bedroom overlooked a street which was a clearway access to the CBD until 9am and because of this, the traffic, including buses,  started around 5.30am and continued until 9. The single glazed windows and wooden shutters could not keep out the noise of the traffic. .
