The pictures not truely show what this hostel really is. I was shocked by the muddy bathrooms and shower in disgusting conditions. The room was even worse. There were a thousand of cockroaches everywhere in the hostel and we also killed a lot of them in our room. Also the swimming pool looked like it hadns’t been cleaned for ages like the rest. It was really an awful experience!!! Location is good but can get better places to stay in the city center for the same price.

An awful experience

My friend and I went to Cairns on vacation to explore the local wonder - the Great Barrier Reef. We were planning on staying there for a couple of days and then go back home. As a student you don't usually have a lot of money, so the backpacker hostel seemed to be a good option for us. Flying Monkey was one of the first hostels that had popped up in the search among the cheap places to stay in the city. From the pictures the hostel appears to be quite decent and clean. However, those pictures do not correctly represent reality. As a matter of fact the hostel appears to be the opposite. The simple sanitary norms have not been taken care of at all. I was shocked by the toilet and shower conditions that were very dirty and just disgusting. Additionally some of the shower equipment were out of order and did't work properly. The swimming pool has not been cleaned for ages just as the common area and the kitchen. The free Wifi was very slow and nearly impossible to use. Moreover, it was available only in the common area which I found very uncomfortable. 

There is only one positive thing about the hostel and particularly its close position to the seaport and the city center. 

If you plan to stay in Cairns for a short period of time, you can stay in Flying Monkeys. However, if you have another option I'd definitely recommend to go for it.

unpleasant experience

No night manager, problems unresolved. Had a bed near a window with a missing pane, when it rained late one night half of my bed was soaked - no one to ask for another bed, no sleep, very uncomfortable night. Complained to new management - too bad, still had to pay. They thought they were being generous by refunding extra nights I'd paid in advance for. Pffft!

broken window, rain, - sodden wet bed - charged $23 for the night

Room was dirty, bathrooms were worse. Only 4 working between the whole hostel when we stayed. Barely any kitchen equipment. Location was good but can get better rooms in the same place for the same price. 

Absolutely disgusting

Staff were unfriendly we got there at 12 for check in they told us it was 2, (it has since been changed but we checked booking.com and it said check in was 12)
The pool was okay but small.
The rooms itself are a disgrace - have you guys ever heard of a hoover?! Buy one and hoover properly! 
And there are no curtains just disgusting shower curtains that are falling down. The window slates were missing which resulted in me waking up with a spider bite on my leg (had this checked by a doctor who confirmed - and no it wasn't there the night before.) 
The kitchen was the only okay thing about this hostel. 
Staff weren't exactly friendly or helpful and very unsociable.
Pay a bit extra and stay somewhere else like Gillingans to enjoy your time in Cairnes
