We arrived late and were given the wrong room key so most likely woke up a full room of sleeping guests. My sheet had black shaved hair all over them so obviously hadn’t been changed. The room key did not lock the door and the lockers were broken so you couldn’t padlock your stuff swag - luckily I was with 2 other travellers so we guarded our valuables whilst we showered. The kitchen was the most dirty place I have ever been and didn’t even want to stand in it let alone cook in it. There was no washing up liquid, there were flies, dirty cutlery, food everywhere. Please look at photos below as you can see the kettle was so filthy it had gone black. 

We were just lucky we only had one night in this hostel! There are lots of hotels around so it’s worth spending a bit more to stay in those than this hostel. 

Unfortunately there were no staff on check out - they make you put your key in a box - but I would have complained and asked for a refund. 

This hostel is obviously not managed or cleaned at all and needs to be shut down.

Do not stay here!

Our stay started off badly. We arrived at 3AM (Greyhound bus). We sent an email to inform them about this to which they didn’t respond. We called them and they told us we should have informed them earlier about this (which we tried to do?!) because they don’t do check-ins after 12AM (this is not mentioned on their website!). As a solution we could call someone at arrival. He didn’t answer so we were lucky that a housekeeper was working and let us in. What if she wasn’t there??

The hostel is old, dirty, smelly and things are not working (like wifi, flushing the toilet, ...). It looks like the place hasn’t been cleaned in months. The staff is often not available. 

I would definitely not recommend this place to someone. 

Dirty, old hostel & non existing staff

Unfortunately, I couldn't put up a review on booking.com cause my friend booked it. There were 4 of us on this trip. The rooms and facilities were adequate and clean so this isn't about the rooms themselves. I don't usually write reviews but the experience we had was so horrible that I had to say something on here but this will only apply to some people.
We checked in around 4-5 pm and even though we specifically asked for a room with 4 beds (because there were 4 of us), we ended up getting 2 room (3 in 1 room and 1 in another). Around 10 or 11 pm, I went to see my friends in the other room and one of the staffs came in (I don't want to describe him but let's just say he was pretty noticeable with his appearance). Came in and asked for all of my friends' ID, threatens to call the police because apparently they overbooked and had some issue with the computer so people didn't know which rooms they were supposed to be in. One of the guest was supposed to be in this room but there was no extra bed so there's a lot of confusion. The whole time he was being really loud and rude. I can't help but to think he was being racist because he just came into my room earlier to talk to a Finnish traveler who also booked with his gf but got different room (he decided to sleep in the same single bed with his gf). The staff was being very polite and kept saying sorry the whole time. My friends and I are Asian, this whole time we were being scorned at for no reason. He made so many assumptions that were simply not true! For example, he kept saying one of us didn't pay, someone's trespassing, you can't just invite people over. After he realize we all paid, he said one of us was clearly staying in the wrong room and we should NEVER switch rooms because it creates confusion (yet it was ok for the other guy to switch room?) 
Two of the girls were already in bed sleeping but I guess it was ok for him to blast vulgar language at 11pm. Then he asked me to show him my room to see if there's any trespassers and again he was being super rude all the way until he entered my room. As soon as he entered my room, he was super polite again and apologized to the Finnish couple that he had to visit the room again! Talk about differential treatment!
At the end, none of us moved rooms but that 7-8 minutes pretty much ruined the entire trip as we were only there for 36 hours. 
I could probably write a PhD thesis length of review on this but I think I've summarized the incident pretty clearly. 
I don't want to discourage people from booking this place because it does have decent facilities but that was our experience with one of its staffs.

Worse experience from all my years staying at hostel!

Me and my partner had to spend the night in Coffs Harbour. The city itself has little ambiance anyways (except for the Jetty Harbour) and finding a place to stay was very hard as well. We booked a night in one of the dorms. When we walked in we stayed with four smelly regulars, which off course isn't a thing to complain about. But they made it very clear that they didn't like any others in their room. The lockers where all smashed in, so there was no place to keep your belongings. The door also was kicked in once, so therefore the lock didn't work. The toilets were dirty and there were many people there who seemed very high. Which off course can't be fully blamed on the hostel, but it made the whole experience feel unsafe.

Unsafe and dirty hostel

Only stayed one night and it was too much. Don’t bother. 

Kitchen facilities old, two cooker units, no worktop space. No sponges to wash your dishes, only smelly old jay clothes. 

Arrival into the backpackers is nice, lovely big modern bar, smell of fresh cooked dinner etc. Our room was basic (private double). One bed, a fan and a double locker too small to fit a backpack inside, lucky we only had school bags with our overnight essentials, everything else we left in the car. Bed was comfortable and sheets were clean so no fault there. 

Went out for a cigarette (which so happens to be right outside our bedroom window), so leave your window closed unless you want smoke in your room. 

When we went to bed the fan proved so noisy it was unusable, so we switched it off. We opened the window to let some hot summer air in. People came upstairs drunk at midnight, absolutely roaring the house down, going into the kitchen, continuing the party there and smoking outside until 3am. An alarm also went off which also woke us but it was from outside the backpackers so can’t give out about that. We ended up closing the window and just lying in the sticky heat for the night which resulted in about four hours of broken sleep. 

In every other hostel the kitchen closes at night, the smoking area is away from people trying to sleep and you are warned to keep the noise down after 11pm. People are totally left to their own devices here. If your a good sleeper or want to get pissed every night maybe this place would suit because there’s zero rules. 

Very poorly run

A short walk to the bus station/stop. The staff were really helpful and friendly. You have to let them know if you will be checking in late (after 9pm) otherwise you'll be locked out like we were. The rooms were nice and clean. The kitchen is small but it really isn't very busy.

Amazing service

Moved here from aussitel and definitely preferred this place. The rooms are big and clean with an ensuite. The hostel is above a pub/bar/restaurant so you can go downstairs for food and or a drink if you want too which is cool. The guy in charge was really nice, we were catching a night bus and he let us leave our luggage and still use the facilities after we checked out. They have a TV room with a DVD player so we watched some films waiting for our bus!
