We didn't stay there - but it is a fantastic place to visit. The pottery is awesome, the staff are friendly, the grounds are just wonderful. We took a calls in glazing which was so much fun!  Totally recommend a visit!

Terrific spot to visit

A range of well-curated local bushwalks; delicious home-cooked meals; groovy artwork on display and for sale and possibilities to create your own. The 10km of unsealed dirt road from the highway is very corrugated and we had to drive through some shallow water which could have been problematic after heavy rain

Delightful family hosts promoting outdoors and creativity

Last minute decision to camp overnight. Loved that everywhere we looked there was artwork and cool things to catch your eye. Loved playing volley ball with the staff and other campers, feeding the animals was a hit. Cafe food was delicious! Campground was well maintained and shower was great ! Looking forward to returning to do the bushwalks around the property & make some pottery of our own. 

Quirky place where we were  welcomed like family 

We stayed at Barkala Farmstay for a night. Its a 10km dirt road from the main highway to the property. I was concerned given we have an old sedan, but the dirt road is pretty good and easy to drive upon.  The property doesnt have any mobile phone reception, which kind of works out ideal. The Piliga Pottery shop and the Blue Wren Cafe are like the first point when you arrive. There is wifi in the cafe. We were staying at the Farmhouse, which was a bit further ahead. We were concerned initially that the we'd have to share the bathroom, but to be honest, didnt seem to be an issues as it was quite clean. When you arrrive at the farmhouse, the rooms are on the first floor and you have to climb the stairs, there is abig common balcony, with a view of the farm in front. There are a couple of tables and chairs outside the room for guests to use. the common facilities had a toaster, tea kettle along with supplies for tea and coffee., and a common fridge. There are 4 rooms, but usually only three are rented out. The rooms were very nice and clean, with a double bed and two singles, a small TV, and a fan. The aircon is solar heated, so please be mindful- and it does get hot during the summers. you open the windows and if there is a nice breeze, its comfortable. we loved our stay here. The property called us around 4 o clock to enquire if we needed food as the cafe closes at 5.    We ordered the pizza which was realy really good. thin crusted pizza. we also ordered the german meal which had two sausages, saukerkrat and crunchy potatoes. Again delicious. To be honest, to get this kind of a meal in a place as desolate like this is a luxury. a lot of the guest had got there own food and kept in the fridge as well. we had a great relaxing break. There are loads of walks from the property, and you can drive as well. We just relaxed on the balcony, having our teas and dinner and watching the horses. In the night we felt hungry and used the microwave to make noodles. Simple delights of life. Next morning we explored the pottery . We'd love to come back here and would totally recommend. At the end of the day its a farm stay and not a luxury glamping ( for the very few negative reviews we read).

Lovely & Relaxing Farm Stay

We stayed at the Barkala Farmstay for 2 nights in August 2020. 

We were originally planning to camp in the Warrumbungle National Park, but poor weather meant we changed our plans and we are so glad that we did and got to experience Barkala. 

We were a group of 4 friends and stayed in the Eagle Valley Cottage. It was one of the most wonderful places we'd stayed. Not only the peaceful location (situated 2-3km from the main Farm) but the care and craftsmanship that had gone into the construction. 

The house was cosy, and it was lovely to have a wood fire to keep us warm during the weekend. It was great to get 'off grid' in all senses of the phrase! 

There are a variety of walks around the property, and we had a delicious (and gluten free!) meal at the cafe on-site. Would really recommend Barkala to couples, groups of friends or families - lots for kids to do!

Wonderful, peaceful visit to unique accommodation

Spent two great nights here. The first in Eagle Valley - so spacious and away from everyone. The second in the Old School House - a novelty. Loved the pretzel bed. The Blue Wren Cafe is also delightfully quirky. Delicious food. Maria,her family and staff are all so friendly and welcoming. The story behind this place is fascinating. Check out the aboriginal sandstone caves only a short drive away.

Unique!

We loved every moment of our stay here. Maria is so hospitable and makes you feel like you are the centre of the world. She put us in touch with Kerry, who volunteers as a guide and takes people out on trails that he has discovered over the decades that he has been visiting the property. Kerry is a wonderfully gentle person and an absolute vault of knowledge about all the bush plants, geology, topography and wildlife. We went on a 2 hour trip with him of the property and saw some amazing sights and listened to some great stories.  Kerry is probably the best bushwalking guide we have had - we couldn't believe our luck that our paths crossed with him that day.

We were two couples and stayed in the beautiful Studio house for the first night. We loved all the wooden touches and pottery. We also played table tennis non-stop which was a great way to shake off the long drive from Sydney.
The second and third nights were in the farmstay. As we stayed in winter, it got cold on the common balcony, so we opted to stay warm near the pizza oven the restaurant over wine and games. 

Everyone here is so friendly. We really can't wait to return to this place.

Amazing farmstay with the most knowledgeable bushwalking guide

What a wonderful place off the grid to relax and enjoy the natural world around us. We stayed in the Old Schoolhouse which can easily accommodate a family of six or more. Spread over two levels, it is well appointed with everything you need for a few days time out. In terms of activities, you can feed the animals, visit the pottery or enjoy a coffee or meal in the on-site cafe. We would strongly recommend it.

Wonderful Farmstay for Young and Old Alike

Barkala Farmstay was a little piece of heaven for two city-slickers like us. The property is large, has numerous walking tracks with lots of farm animals, kangaroos and birdlife to spot. Best of all, it had little to no phone reception so we experienced some much needed enforced tranquility! It's located a fair distance off the main road, and you need to drive down several kilometres of dirt track, but it really wasn't an issue for our humble Subaru. The staff were very friendly and organised. The food at the Blue Wren Cafe on the property was very good - the breakfasts were simple but filling, our dinner of the German sausages was very tasty, and for lunch one day the staff prepared sandwiches for us to take on our visit to the Warrumbungle National Park. If you feel like a meal elsewhere, it's an easy drive into Coonabarabran town. The sky here is amazing at night time, and we had a fantastic night of stargazing with our own telescope and camera. We only stayed for two nights but I could easily have spent a few more nights here and would have probably taken up one of the pottery courses as the pottery workshop looked quite impressive.

Wish we'd stayed a bit longer

We really appreciated the opportunity to stay in a very special place full of energy and creativity in the midst of the unique and beautiful Pillaga. There are many bland hotels around the but only one Barkala and Pillaga pottery full of handcrafted joy. The soothing warm dry heat, with dips in the pool to cool off, the delicate land, with an almost desert beauty, the bluest sky in the day and at night the countless stars in the sky, the quiet and sence of space, and then the friendly welcome from all, the colours of the pottery, delicious food,and an amazing handcrafted schoolhouse to stay in. Seeing the art and craft of a environment built over years with love was a wonderful experience. I was constantly finding another little peice of care and attention built into the very fabric of the buildings. Something you can not get at a five star hotel.
