We arrived around 5:30pm & the hosts had the fire in our cottage lit for us which was lovely. 

We stayed in Tea Tree cottage, the third of three 2bdr cottages that look out onto the gorgeous valley. The cottage has a wood fire and a split system heater/air con. We were there in the coldest part of the year & found it best to get the fire started later afternoon to keep the cottage warm all night. More than enough wood was supplied & replenished. The master bedroom had a queen bed (with electric blanket) hanging space & beautiful views. The second bedroom has a bunk bed & separate single bed (electric blanket on latter only). Woollen blankets & doonas provided for extra warmth. 

The bathroom has a lovely shower (with  instant hot water & a heated  rack - very welcome!), toilet & basin. There’s also a hairdryer, washing machine & ironing board. Lots of hanging space for towels which you don't get often! 

Kitchen has 4 electric hot plates & electric oven, microwave & good sized fridge. Kettle & toaster also. Plenty of cooking utensils, bowls, pots & pans too. 

The lounge area has two couches & a dining table. The tv has limited reception but there’s a dvd player & some dvd movies are provided. There’s also uno, rummikub & connect 4. 

From the cottage the views were stunning-not only peaceful sheep but green hills & valleys out to the ocean. We loved seeing rainbows & having the milky way on our doorstep at night. 

There are lemon & lime trees right near the cottages to pick from & the share garden has plenty of seasonal herbs.

There are gumboots you can borrow for your stay if you don’t have any-they’re extremely handy!!!

Helen was happy to do a short walking farm tour whenever we wanted & we enjoyed getting to meet the pet goats, ponies, donkey, chicken, turkeys, sheep & alpacas. We got to feed the ponies donkey & sheep (& goats when they were interested) &  the alpacas. They were all very lovely to feed and my youngest fell in love with the idea of living on a farm. If your kids are brave  they can enjoy the freedom to feed the animals, collect eggs or roam around the farm. The dogs were always around-such a treat to have one greet us on the verandah & Jagger even escorted us to the alpacas one day. 

There are several walks you can do around the farm & one (strenuous walk back) will take you to a beautiful river spot. Our girls loved this little glade. 

The excursions we took included to Apollo bay (about an hour, very twisty roads so we didn’t want to do it more than a couple of times) once for a terrific lunch at the distillery & another for a delicious meal of fish n chips at the co-op, the Otway fly, triplet falls, Johanna beach (lovely for a walk & explore, not safe for swimming) & on the way home from Apollo bay we also stopped at Melba gully to see the glow worms. Lavers hill is the closest ‘town’ & has a milk bar, hotel, bottle shop & restaurant. 

Probably the best thing about this getaway for us after a very long term was the pace-Helen & julian provided everything we needed to  slow down & enjoy the simple joys in life for a few days & we’re very grateful for that.

Stunning view beautiful hosts

This place is located in the countryside near the Great Otway National Park and Great Ocean Road and Walk about 50 minutes west of Apollo Bay and 2.5 hours west of Melbourne by car. There are several self contained cottages on this farm retreat. The hosts , both human and animal , are very warm and friendly. You must bring in your own food and supplies for your stay though there is a decent restaurant 10 minutes drive. There are seasonal items in the garden and groves that are shared. The beds and washrooms were good with good hot water available. There is a washing machine in the unit and a clothesline. A full kitchen and dining area were well stocked.  The view to the ocean is stunning and you can here the calls of many animals in the area. This would also be good for a family.

A very pleasant relaxing stay

The location is great, close enough to the attractions of the Otways NP and the Great Ocean Road, and far enough from everything else. It is close to Melba Gully, so you can see the glow worms at night. We stayed 5 nights in a 1 bedroom cottage that was perfect and had a great view (all the cottages have a great view). The farm has two very friendly dogs, alpacas, horses, one donkey, sheep and chickens -- you can collect your own eggs. There is a herb garden for the guests, and last but not least, the hosts, Helen and Julian, are lovely!
 It is a great getaway from the daily grind (with limited internet and phone). I wish we could stay longer, and I hope we can take the extended family next time.

Amazing 4 night family farm stay over summer. Very friendly hosts and farm animals.  Peaceful accommodation. Highly recommended.

Great farm stay in the Otways

We stayed here back in October for 2 nights, we only
Wish it could of been longer. The cottage was clean and very comfortable and the location is simply out of this world. Rolling Green Hills, Waterfall and rivers and the ever present view of and sounds of the powerful ocean at Johanna beach. We got up close with so many native animals. The bird song was simply wonderful. Mornings spent on the balcony listening to the symphony that only nature can provide will stay with me for a long time. We are so looking forward to returning.

Where heaven and earth meet.

Absolutely loved escaping to Johanna. We stayed in the 2 bedroom cottage which was more than comfortable for a family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids 5,4,4). The cottages where cosy and warm fitted out with all the amenities you could require to cook as much or little as you like. The kids loved collecting the eggs in the morning to cook for breaky, fishing in the pond, orchard walks to the waterfall, feeding the animals and being allowed to run free to find frogs, worms, trees to climb without their parents having to worry about a thing. The dogs where gorgeous too. VERY FRIENDLY, VERY OBEDIENT!!
Of course, if you are looking to venture further the 12 apostles are only down the road. Would definitely recommend going to Timboon ice-creamery and then the distillery (TIP: get the ice-cream first as the distillery are happy for the kids to eat it there).
Would definetly go back.

Perfect getaway for the family

This beautiful location is only a couple of hours from Melbourne but the wild coastal landscapes and wide empty beaches are the perfect tonic for modern life. Our “Acacia” cottage at Johanna River farm was spotless and very well equipped. Sure, there was no internet and one sketchy bar of 3G on the edge of the balcony, but sitting in front of the wood fire listening to the wind in the trees and the rain on the roof that didn’t seem to matter at all.

Isolation at its best

My partner and I stayed in the Spa Cottage overlooking the dam and the rolling hills of Johanna Beach. It was a magical stay, the cottage is so comfortable and well furbished with a very functional kitchen and all the extras you could desire. 
The spa is huge and very relaxing, and the bed has lovely electric blankets. 
The cottage was extremely clean and tidy when we arrived, you can see that Helen and Julian care a lot about the comfort of holidayers.

The area is stunning, the property has its own rainforest gully and river and the animals are wonderful. there is a lovely little garden where guests can pick their own herbs and lemons. 

For the price, Johanna River Farm provides the best value.

Lovely accomodation in the Otways

We stayed at the Acacia and Blue Gum Cottages for 4 days. The farm is a great base for exploring the Great Ocean Road. Our child loved the farm experience- feeding the farm animals and collecting eggs in the morning. We enjoyed exploring the property, seeing bunnies hopping around, spotting the koala on the gum tree outside our cottage, listening to the kookaburras laugh. Helen and Julian are amazing hosts - they are a fountain of information and are fully equipped with all kinds of supplies from torches to jackets. We arrived on a day that hit 41C and plunged to the low teens the next few days. Helen kindly lent us some jackets as we were not prepared for the cold in summer! Note thar the Acacia cottage has very weak to non existent data or mobile coverage. Didn’t really bother us. We cooked delicious dinners- steak from the apollo bay farmers market and tuna from the fishermen’s coop. We will definitely be back for a return visit. 

Great experience and top notch hospitality 

Enjoyed our stay at Johanna River Farm & Cottage immensely. We stayed at Blackwood Cottage which was beautiful, cosy, spacious and well-equipped with amenities. The fireplace kept us warm on cold nights. The caretakers, Mary and Terence were lovely and friendly, bringing us around the farm, introducing the farm animals and allowing feeding. We love the animals and resident dogs, especially the puppy who were super active! The caretakers’ recommendation to dine at the Fisherman Co-Op at Apollo Bay was simply splendid, we love the food there. Overall, an excellent choice for a quiet and simple getaway.
