Very clean, nice location but What I Love the most is the welcoming. The lady at reception was lovely. The only bad thing I can say is that I could hear the bar from downstairs on Saturday night but if you come during the week, should be fine

I would come back!

I will be slightly biased here as I stayed for 2 months whilst on my working holiday visa.
I grew to love Gecko's and Mackay.
Gecko's has a chilled vibe as a working hostel. It's not really the place to stay for huge party's, but Fridays and Saturdays aren't bad. Currently there are a great group of people living there, but like a lot of places it is what you make of it. Staff are lovely, so take the time to chat to them and enjoy some great conversations.
No bunk beds, great rooftop deck, comfy chairs (new recliners) and a quiet kitchen.
For what you pay you'll find nothing better.

My home away from home

We really enjoyed our stay at Gecko's Rest. As it was off peak, the hostel was quiet. There was plenty of space and equipment in the kitchen. 
Towels were provided and it was very nice to have normal beds and not be in bunk beds. The wifi was mostly good, however, it would be better if it was accessible from the dorm rooms.
Rooms were clean. 

Enjoyable stay

It’s clear they are making an effort to create a warm environment with the lovely paintings around the walls and a fantastic balcony area on the roof. It’s also situated in a great location in Mackay, despite that the best thing about the town was leaving it. 

The receptionist also was friendly and chatty.
Would stay here again if we were in the area. Overall it was good value for money. 

Cheap and cheerful

Gecko's is extremely central to everything you need in the area. Look, there isn't much to do in Mackay so you do get what you pay for. 

Staff are very friendly and helpful with a laid back approach, as you get further North in Queensland. 

My stay was pleasant. The kitchen didn't have too much to offer, but you get your own utensils box which is good. Fairly clean kitchen.

Bathrooms - are okay. Could be better there.

Loved the rooftop vibe especially during a sunset. Has a lot of potential up there. Throw in a bar and a pool, you could be in for some profitable Sunday's mate!

I liked that there were no bunks, so you don't feel like  Cyclone Debbie is hitting Mackay when someone climbs on top of you. The bunk that is, not you. Unless your night was that rough.

I had a gentlemen sleeping in my room who snored louder than Mufasa in the Lion King, which was highly disturbing but that isn't the accommodations fault. Although I do understand why he is single now.

Gecko's isn't bad. Would I stay there again? Maybe.

SHRUGS SHOULDER

To begin my review, I would like to state that Geckos Rest was a saviour during Cyclone Debbie. Hotel Mackay left us in a bit of a pickle (see my unhappy review on their page) but this hostel had availability - a 3 bedroom to boot, for myself and two other girls I was traveling with. 
Geckos Rest will not go down as my favourite hostel I stayed in - it's a little rough around the edges, for lack of better description. Our room smelled stale and sour, but that subsided some after leaving the air conditioning on for 24 hours. 

Bathrooms were large, but lacking in supplies- for an evening/morning, only one stall out of four had toilet paper. 

The staff here are flat and unfriendly, the two that I encountered -owners? I passed one of male staff in the hallway but he was unsmiling, cold and unwelcoming. 

The roof top deck at this hostel is great for sunning yourself on a nice day. The people who stay here make a mess of it, glasses left all over the tables from a night of boozing... seems like a few FIFO (fly in fly out) people here who like to drink too much at night and get into fights in the hallways, with no regards for those sleeping past midnight. Walls are thin, you don't miss much. Mind you the drinkers are at every hostel, and maybe Cyclone Debbie didn't help things. 

Rooms had a fridge and no bunk beds! I did like that. My bed was fairly comfy, one of the beds in the three bedroom was a camp-style bed: did not look comfortable and very primal. 

The kitchen is large, very little utensils etc... couldn't find a knife anywhere to cut my carrots? (Other than the butter knife I had, they give out cutlery/plate sets when you check in...) not the tidiest kitchen but will chalk that up to less staff during Cyclone Debbie. 

I'd say 2.5/5. Mostly my interactions with the staff here turned me off. Cold and unfriendly vibes. Maybe can chalk that up to Cyclone Debbie stress. The location is great (close to downtown/grocery stores/lagoon) and the rooftop patio is a plus. 

Not bad, not great. 

Absolute nightmare  the place stinks and me and my cousin had half our clothes nicked out the washing machines ! If there’s someone walking about mackay with a white volcom shirt with Hawaii on it I’ll break their jaw it means a lot to me !
