This hotel emailed weeks ago to say they are closed, and our booking has been cancelled.  They have a phone number which is no longer connected, they have taken our money and no refund.  Do not make a booking at this hotel

i really hate when some hotel put in the web site different pictures about the accomodation.the real is OLD dirty and the "receptionist" is rude!
I cant understand why this place can be open.for the same money you can stay better!

A real fraud!!!!!!!!!!!!

After staying in a typical cbd hostel for a few nights, we spent two nights at St Arnaud. Lovely friendly vibe with a homey spacious double room, communal kitchen, TV room, board games and gardens :) lovely after the cold institutional feel of our other hostel. Beds could be comfier and more bathrooms would be great but if you want to complain about that, go somewhere that isn't so wonderfully cheap! 

Cute and quiet 

First of all, the positive: the hostel has a very good location in the quiet southern suburbs of Yarra, too. Just across the street is the wonderful Royal Botanical Garden, which is definitely worth a few walks. On foot, you can also easily reach the downtown area, which is about three kilometers away. So we booked a nine-day stay. The price was already a little higher than hanging out at the last hostels, but wlan and breakfast seemed to be included, and the hostel was a nice alternative. But the breakfast was just enough and it didn't take us long to walk. If we didn't get to the first stretch of the street, we didn't get to the downtown area, which is about three kilometers away. So we booked a nine-day stay. The price was already a little higher than hanging out at the last hostels, but wlan and breakfast seemed to be included, and the hostel seemed to be a nice change. She's a great grandmother.

I stayed at this place for almost three weeks in the 4 bed female dorm where I was the only guest in the room for most of the time. The place has the basic facilities you need. The standard is not good but it's ok for the price. It get's very cold in the winter. Some of the staff are friendly.

Ok for the price

Stayed at St Arnauds in October 2012 for a full week. The facilities are basic but what you would expect on a budget. I stayed in a single room which was on the top floor. Staff assisted me with my (very heavy) case and were friendly. The fridge in the room was as much as I needed to store a small amount of food and the communal atmosphere in the kitchen was nice. 
The place could do with a little updating and I can imagine that in years gone by it was a place to stay for people coming up from the country.
I returned for an extra night on either side of a trip to Tasmania and stayed in the female only 4 bed dorm. Again at the front of the building so the trams were a bit of a distraction for a girl from semi rural Western Australia but it did the job.
Am staying for two nights again this year.

Good for the price

We stayed at St. Arnaud for only a few days! Nice, quiet and family-friendly atmosphere! The rooms and services are not of the highest quality, but it was clean! Small but nice kitchen is mostly clean, strict rules that have allowed a good coexistence! If you have no demands and you like to live quietly, go!!!!!

Not excellent, but family!

I've spent 8 nights in this hostel and it was perfect for relaxing. Quiet hostel, nice staff and breakfast are included. Downtown is relatively fast by tram and anyone who wants to go to the Australian Open in January can do this on foot (10-15 minutes). I can only recommend this hostel!

Nice hostel to expand

This hotel is located in South Yarra (a suburb of Melbourne) and is not far from the city centre (by bus; walking takes a bit longer). We stayed 3 nights in a so-called dormitory room, a room with four (floor) beds. Bathrooms/showerrooms are shared on the ground floor.

Very cheap hotel

St Arnaud's is a hostel in Melbourne. It is located in a suburb of Melbourne. Unfortunately, the airport shuttle did not work for me, so the journey was a bit cumbersome. The hostel offers a very meager breakfast. The rooms are clean. The atmosphere is rather anonymous. Overall, I found the hostel a little too expensive.
