Did this pub get new owners/management or something? Because it’s gone downhill of late. Took away the games room entirely (not the pokie room, the room that had pinball machine and ping pong table at one stage)  Although the book shelf wall was quaint. 

We waited at the bar with another customers for nearly 5 minutes before a young lady staff member came out of pokie room after dealing with a machine in there, poor luv was on her own, she apologised though so all good. 

No NON ALCOHOLIC beer though which is highly annoying as I like to have a vodka and my husband doesn’t drink so he likes to have non alcoholic beer when we go out, better than soft drink and he doesn’t feel ‘out of place’. Sh**s me when pubs don’t cater for those that can’t drink but still want to enjoy outings with drinkers and drink beer. It’s 2023, time to get with the program. Especially when we need to encourage designated drivers. Sad because we have been here a few times with no problems. Won’t be so quick to visit again. Please get a variety of non alcoholic beers. Thanks

Gone downhill a little

I love going here and have found their schnitzel to be the best in Newcastle! Its one downfall in my opinion is that the volume is consistently always too loud. I work as a gym instructor (which always has loud music), so I promise I’m not being soft! Makes it difficult to hold a conversation, especially on trivia nights. Will definitely continue to go here but hopefully something that can be changed.

Love the food but too loud! 

Have been here before for a meal and was happy so thought we would come again. We had our older teenage boys with us. Very relaxed atmosphere but they were great at ensuring we signed in on arrival (covid). The staff, a young girl and guy, were very friendly and helpful so service was great. Meals were well priced. I ordered one of the specials, pork belly with apple and radish salad and mashed potato, quite nice, parts of the pork belly crackle was tough but the meat was juicy and tender. Hubby had the chicken schnitzel special with chilli prawns on top and it was huge! He was very impressed, not dried out at all and the sauce was nice, not too spicy (although he likes spicy so said it could have been hotter) chips were nice and crispy. Older son had the chicken burger, also huge and very juicy, he was impressed! Younger son had cheese burger and he was stuffed by the end. All in all the meals were great, we were very happy. Only reason for the 4 star (instead of 5) was because the tables and menus could have done with a far better clean, quite sticky. But other than that it was great. Will be back. 

Very nice food, relaxed atmosphere 

My partner and I dropped in for a pub lunch and it wasn't as simple as we thought. He wanted the Mexican Bowl but I was told that "there's no rice".... How do you have no RICE?? OK, Schnitty it is. I ordered the lunch special of fettucini with seafood. When our meals arrived, mine was unrecognisable. A thick tomato sauce over the top and melted parmesan cheese that suggested it had been reheated. A bit of a dig and I find the pasta not to be fettucini, but some kind of thick lasagnette. The flavour was one note and the whole dish disappointing. My partner's schnitty and chips was likewise. The dry, puckered chips also screamed of a re-heat and the schnitzel was tasteless.
The Crown really needs to get its kitchen in order. You have a licence to print money given the local businesses and all the building sites. It was telling that the restaurant, aside from one other table was empty.

Service very friendly but food was dreadful

We were walking out of town and ran across the Crown & Anchor. We had a look at the menu but were really 'between meals' so we passed over a menu that looked pretty good. The place is roomy with a bit of a sports bar feel but there is a restaurant on the 1st floor. Close to town it's a cracker.

Really friendly staff

Went for a late lunch and it took more than 35 minutes to make garlic bread (which was mediocre when it finally arrived). Told us after we had ordered and sat down that there would be a wait on food, which was no use as we were on our lunch breaks from work. Excuse given was a function upstairs. We would have appreciated knowing there was a wait before we ordered so we could go somewhere else. Very disappointing. 

Slow.

Very old backpaker house, room and toilets are clean but the old carpet smells really bad. The room lighting is so bad. You can hear every sound outside and so much noise. Doesn’t feel good staying here. Better pay for Ibis or other better hotel. However the staff are pretty friendly and helpful. 

Just a place to sleep, don’t expect more

Stopped by as was walking to the beach and was very busy and I could see why, the food was excellent, the snitty was huge and wife had the burger which she said was one of the best she has had, kids played ping pong then we headed up the beach. Great day in Newcastle . Has a restaurant on 1st floor which I will be definitely go back as the menu looked very tasty, great find , something you would expect in Sydney or Melbourne 

Great pub in the middle of Newcastle 

Went there today with friends for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. Although the ambience of the ground floor bar and eating area is not "fancy" the food we had was very good and we would all go back there again. Nicely priced too.

Pleasant surprise

The $10 pasta on Monday’s and the $2 tacos on Tuesday’s are very good and great value for money.  We have eaten there four times in eight days!
Outdoor seating is available early on and you can watch the world walk by.  The locals are ‘interesting’.  We haven’t yet tried the upstairs dining, but hope to get there in a day or two.  Well done.
