This is a typical Newcastle pub.
Great beer garden 
Meals were good and service time was fine.
Meal size was good and cooked as requested.
Order at the bar, then table service to deliver the meal.
Seating can be a bit hard to come by and we ended up in the tab area.
It was a popular location for a meal on a Friday, booking may be needed if you have something special on.
Well worth a visit

Good Pub Grub, Good Price

Classic Australian pub in inner city Newcastle (Cooks Hill). Built in 1882, with nostalgic features - including pressed tin ceilings, and historic advertising. Beer garden is beautiful, with a garden ceiling of various ferns and plants. Enjoyable dinner here earlier in the week. My steak, with peppercorn sauce, was great; other meals ordered were reasonable too. Good variety of beers on tap. 

Commonwealth beauty

Went for a midweek drink and a meal and was so impressed by the relaxed and friendly service and atmosphere.  The food was wholesome, not quite 5 star, but the location and evening definitely are.  Loved the fact that there  are different sections, traditional sit down, casual dining and sports bar, all separate.

Fantastic local

Classic Australian pub. Beautifully preserved Australian brick & tile hotel dating back to 1882. Looks to be in magnificent standing both outside & in. Pressed tin ceilings, and great retro advertising billboards adorn the many walls. Only stopped by for a couple of beers this afternoon, but there's a good range of beers on tap and bar staff were personable and accommodating. I note they do food and accommodation too.

Cooks Hill Australiana

The food is delicious, the mushroom salad with chicken and blood orange dressing is my favourite. Have done the Monday Mystery dinner twice now and it was delicious. Word of warning that the soup entree is very filling so leave enough room for mains and dessert. The chef knows what flavours work. Meals are presented nicely, service is attentative and quick. Book ahead for Mondays as always booked out. Definitely a must.

Returning again and again

Chose the snack menu on a Friday night - bad decision, the food was terrible. Squid was bland & the texture was as if dipped in mud, garlic bread on doughy white bread with a lick of garlic butter on the top- really? That’s what you get at dominos, dumplings were hard & totally tasteless.

We often have date night on Monday but when I asked could they do a group of 20 well easy as..
Definitely no one was disappointed fantastic service by all staff and couldn’t do enough for us. 
Highly recommended Monday mystery dinner wether for 2 or 20 people.

Work mystery dinner 🥘 

The Commonwealth Hotel is a must visit for a casual drink and dinner when visiting Newcastle. The beers and wines are first class, the food superior and the publican & staff are the friendliest you could imagine.

I was so impressed by the food when I went along to the Moreish Mystery Monday event (held every Monday). We dined on spicy laksa with fresh prawns and sour cream entree, Atlantic salmon with a beetroot, bean and mandarin salad, with black caviar and a blood orange agrumato for mains and then Nutella chocolate tart with crystallised jelly sugar, chantilly cream, served with vanilla bean ice cream for dessert 😍 They also have their regular (and extensive) menu on offer if you don't like the idea of a mystery dinner. Great value for money and a lovely dining experience. We sat in the garden area which is filled with pots of tropical plants and even a water bath up on high.  

Magnificent Moreish Mystery Monday Munching

Had a great stay at this hotel. The staff was very helpful, and the hotel provided with a comfortable well-furnished room. All we needed to rest our heads. I enjoyed a lovely walk out to the beach in the morning. Exceeded my expectations. Thank you for making our time a really nice one
