We had stayed at The Pines almost 5 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, so decided to come again. This time it wasn't quite as good. It's changed hands, so the owners aren't onsite. It's self-check-in with a keypad and that worked fine. The accommodation was the same as last time. Absolutely spotless room and house, with a comfortable bed and beautiful linen. As we were there on a weekend, a hot cooked breakfast was included, during the week it's self serve continental.
We arrived at 2pm to an empty house, so decided to make ourselves a cuppa. Beautiful loose leaf teas and a coffee machine were there for us to help ourselves. Sadly, no biscuits were provided as they often are in a B & B. That had been the selling point with the previous owners, a delightful afternoon tea was provided.
We chose to stay in for the afternoon and watched a Netflix movie in the lounge  which was great. More guests arrived later, with each of them asking if we were the owners, as there appeared to be some confusion. We said no, and pointed out that they could help themselves to a cuppa, and told them about the breakfast times etc.  One guest was looking for decaf coffee, but we told them there was none. 
We were woken at 6.30am by the sound of the microwave 'pinging'. Some of the guests were leaving early and preparing food.
Our hot cooked breakfast was lovely, but I did find it strange that the cereals, bread etc were kept in the kitchen, as was the jam, butter and milk in the fridge. In all B & B's we've stayed in, they are all on the table so you can help yourself. There was only 1 bottle of milk, and if all guests chose to have cereal as well as the small cooked breakfast, they would have run out. I believe there were around 10-12 guests.
The house itself is gorgeous and the aircon worked well for heating, but we couldn't work out how to lower the temperature in our room. So it was either have it on or off as there were no instructions in the room. I also wanted a bath the previous night,  which started off very hot, but then went cool when the bath was only half full. I waited 10 minutes, hoping the water would soon run hot, but it didn't. So I got in, decided I didn't want a tepid bath and got out. Disappointing not to have enough hot water for a bath.
For the price of $188 per night, we won't stay again.

Our second visit wasn't as good as our first

It seems The Pines recently changed hands and now there are no staff on site. This means collect your own key (the key safe didn’t work- I called a number and it was activated remotely). And, make your own breakfast from food left in a communal kitchen. We got up early at 7, found the kitchen full of dirty plates. The bread in the frig was clearly a few days old, the jam jars were sticky, and the yogurt tubs all only half full. The wifi didn’t work and there was no one to ask. Our room had been cleaned but an empty (used) glass had been missed, the Venetian blinds were broken and very dusty and the shower curtain slimy. This hotel needs to decide if it’s self catering or a bnb, it can’t be both. Finally, it’s on the Pacific highway so very noisy. Won’t be coming back.

Doesn’t live up to reviews

This place has been changing and old comment are not my actual experience.
Now managed by other motel, it isnt a B&B anymore.
- You have to do the checkin by yourself in other place , and you have to drive with a lot of traffic for that.
- You have to cook your breakfast by yourself during week days.
- Terrace and garden aren't well maintained, although the weather is very nice.

For this price, I am really disappointed. It is not what we are looking for in a B&B... for this service a motel is cheaper. We won't come back.


Not a B&B anymore

Marks place is a beautiful, charming, historical b&b with loads of uniqueness. It has been superbly renovated, and is really well appointed and comfortable. The house has all the modern touches to make you completely comfortable, but with a wow factor. The wifi is great, bed comfortable, and breakfast wonderful. To add a final touch, Mark the owner dropped by twice to make sure we were happy, and their housekeeper also went out of her way. The only negative to be aware of is you need to pick up the key at another lodge nearby....they should be able to streamline this and reduce this step. Overall, great experience!

Charming and unique

It was a perfect little spot for two nights! The house has so much character being over a 100 years old!  Kathleen is such a wonderful host...Also can't recommend the generous breakfast enough cooked by Marianne :)

Such a good find!

The house is great and the hostess very friendly and helpful. You are genuinely made to feel welcome and comfortable. The traffic noise isn’t an issue due to new double glazed windows. Only issue we had were some other loud guests coming I. Late at night, but can not fault the pines for that. 

Great choice for a B&B

I stayed 6 nights in February 2018. Carol and her husband Glenn and Marion were really great hosts. So much time to talk with guests and to share their knowledge of the region. I really liked the rooms. Everything was clean and attractive. Breakfast was very generous. The dining, lounge, and kitchen areas were great for relaxing and for meeting other guests. Guests could also use the kitchen and use the large fridge. Was also quiet. Also great value. Best things about Nowra: 1. The River ... for great hiking (esp the lower Grotto walk, for bike riding, and great golf course on the river. 2. Nowra is v centrally locted for day trips or half day trips in any direction. The Pines ... a "magic" place. Thank you Carol!

Clean. Quiet. Old world charm. Attractive accommodation. Carol, Marion and Glenn really great hosts.
