Stayed here in a private room for a week with my boyfriend while we are travelling around Australia. The building itself was fairly outdated, a pretty small room and a small kitchen. The size of the kitchen wasn’t much of an issue as everyone made space for each other but can be a little overcrowded at times. The dining space was a bit too small as there was only two small tables which obviously filled up very quickly at peak times. However, the rooftop terrace was nice and we ate our breakfast on it in the morning. Although the building was a bit outdated it was very very clean, staff cleaned it daily (including the toilets, which were sparkling clean). This did however mean that 3 different members of staff entered our room every morning, between 10-12, however we soon got used to this and often were out at that time anyway. Also, our bed was super comfy and there was a fan which kept the air circulating which was great on the very hot days! The other people in the hostel were nice, some of them seemed to work at the hostel as well meaning the staff were really friendly!! Location is really good, bit of a weird road but lots of places to get quick food and good supermarkets. Also really really close to Kings Cross Station which was really helpful and only a short walk to the harbour and also the centre. Overall a good stay, Lukas was especially helpful and kind when checking us in and out, also facilitating the use of the hostels luggage storage. Thanks Funkhouse!!

Average hostel but really good stay :)

I recently stayed at the Funk House Hostel and quickly came to realise their terrible cockcroach issues. They are not only in the communal and kitchen area where you prepare food, they were also in my bed at night, even though we were vigilant about having no edible items within the room. The housekeeping consisted of someone coming into the room and pushing a hoover into the wall about three times then leaving. It was laughable. There were dead cockcroaches behind and under the bed when we first arrived (before anyone was in the room) so it hadn't even been hoovered since the previous guests. I stayed in a four bedroom dorm with one of my friends and the other two guests in my room tipped me over the edge. I know this isn't the hostels fault, but the two girls should have been asked to leave. Not only were they filthy and smelt awful, one of them came in from a night out at 4am and vomited on me whilst I was asleep and then proceeded to vomit in the bunk above me and on the wall by the bin. She got up in the morning and didn't apologise or even clean up the mess and the hostel didn't do anything to help me. Although the staff are friendly and smiley it really does not change the fact these behaviours and conditions are unacceptable.  To be clear I am a backpacker and I have realistic standards! Please think and read this before staying here.

Awful!

The worst hostel I've ever been to in Sydney!! Absolutely disgusting, dirty and unhygienic! The kitchen, a pure breeding room for germs and bacteria. The mattresses in the kitchen, if you can even call them that, are completely red, you're sitting on the blank wood. All seating facilities are in poor condition. Renovation or renovation seems to have never been an option here. We paid $24 a night, not much, but I wouldn't even stay there for free again. It would have been cleaner on the street. Unfortunately, I can't give zero points, so only one. At least the staff and help can never be nice.

You're such a dirty little shithole!

Cockroaches, rats will be your friends broken carpet in the showers, not even a closed door just shower curtains The cleanliness leaves you wanting The receptionist  M unpleasant, lunatic No permission to invite friends on the rooftop for a drink.

Get out of here!

We stayed here for a week beginning of the year, found it to be difficult to speak to anyone and that the fridges and kitchen were full of long termers food and alcohol. 

The free breakfast was ok, and so was the BBQ on the terrace 

We had originally paid for a 4 bed dorm but after being separated on the first night due to a error we were put in a private room which was ok. January in Sydney is HOT though and the rooms could do with AC. 

Wifi was dodgy, but usable

Stayed here for a week and would do it again. They offer alot of activities to stay here and its really easy to meet people. There are alot of dishes to use and the beds are warm and comfortable. The bathrooms are a little small with only a curtain separating you from everyone else but other than that it was a great stay.

Cool place

Amazing Hostel with amazing Staff and loveley people in there. If you want to be for yourself, quite comfy beds in 4 or 6 bed dorms are a place to stay. If you want to meet people you find plenty of travellers in the TV room or on the rooftop. The event manager also takes care of taking people out almost every night or organizing a bbq on the rooftop (free bbq!!!) on fridays. I totally enjoyed my stay and loved the funkhouse family. Not a party hostel, but gives options to go out and enjoy Sydney Nightlife.

Amazing Stay

The hostel is well located in Kingscross. It's not far from the subway or shopping. The internet works relatively poorly, not at all. Unfortunately there's no oven in the kitchen. The breakfast was okay with two different toasts, cornflakes and different marmalades. On Fridays there's a free BBQ. Grade over Christmas they've offered a lot of great things. The beds are comfortable and there are quite large lockers in the rooms. You can recommend further.

It was okay.

Stayed in this hostel for 5 days. I found it to be really clean, great areas to relax and chat in, really friendly staff and lovely people. Most of the guests where long term so everybody kind of knew each other which made it really easy to make friends and have someone show me around. Also made it a very respectful hostel where it was easy to get a good night sleep and not have to worry about food, phones, shoes or anything getting stolen. 
The wifi was actually decent, some days it was touch and go but I was able to even watch Netflix a couple of nights which is pretty amazing in a backpackers. 
Also ladies, they have a blow dryer and straightener plugged in at all times in the girls bathrooms! 
The only thing I'd have to say if there was no where to dry your hands in the bathrooms and the water pressure was non existent. 
10/10 would stay here again and will be recommending to any friends that go to Sydney! 

Great atmosphere 

It is quite cheap but that is about the only advantage.
The rooms, kitchen and community areas as well as bathrooms have a funny smell and are dirty.
Beds are also kind of gross.
Would not go there again.
Rather look for a b&b or spend a bit more.
