Room 20 Family ensuite rm  - hotel is really convenient to Train Station and eat street in Strafield. Plenty of dinning options close by. 
Checkin was easy.
Room was very basic. Appeared clean but very tired. Decor old (not historic old), ensuite  pretty run down. TV didn’t work and old aircon was effective but a little noisy. Beds were truely awful. We suspect very old and cheap (could feel the springs) and extremely uncomfortable. 
Some noise from the hotel and bottle shop, but manageable.
Won’t opt to stay here again.

Not  great

Never in my life have I stayed at a horrible place. Checked in and someone was already in the room. Back to the staff I went and it took 4 staff, yes 4 of them, to stuff around like morons for 1 hour before I was able to even check into another room. Then.. at 10.30pm when I finally get ready for bed, a stranger unlocked the door (obviously tried to check someone else into my room) so here I am naked. I called them to explain and got 'oh, sorry about that'.
Then, after talking to the booking site, they informed me the motel refused to even give a partial refund. So if you would like to wait an hour to even get checked in and if you don't mind feeling unsafe and don't mind a stranger coming into your room, dont mind that even the tv doesnt work, then by all means, book this putrid motel filled with incompetent people.

Never again!!! It is not safe!!! Do not book here!!!

Do not use this property the owners daughter is an extremely arrogant self entitled woman who is not at all concerned with the provisions of being a kind and friendly host. Her mannerisms and attitude was much to be desired. I recommend take your business elsewhere!

Worst customer service in Australia

I stopped in here on Saturday night with my partner and a few friends for dinner. The wait was long as it was a very busy night due to the concerts being held at Olympic Park. When our meals were ready I brought them back to our table and my partner had told me it wasn't the pasta she had ordered, but when I told staff this I was told because I had taken the meal already they couldn't fix the problem, I think that's ridiculous, however my partner ended up just eating the dish which she thought was nice even though not what was ordered, my steak with vegetables and pepper sauce was quite delicious. I would return. We were happy they served frothy on tap. I would have given a higher scoring review if we had actually received what we ordered.

Could of been better. 

We booked 4 months in advance for 4 people and were given a room with 3 beds. We were told it had something to do with house keeping and they wheeled in a stretcher bed. No compensation or apology from the vendor. And the noise coming from the building site next door was a nightmare to be woken up to. When we came downstairs to checkout the female bar staff that was on was extremely rude. Would not recommend this place to anyone. We will never return.

Very impressed with service,  cleanliness, price, location, hot shower,everything great.  Old world charm. My bed made every day (not so in more expensive places I've stayed). Thank you for great stay.  Melanie

Short stay

The staff were friendly & service was good. The food was fresh & tasty. $15 for a 250g Rump with Salad & Chips was good value. All cooked fresh. There were a range of other reasonably priced meals also available.
The Hotel has seen quite a few summers but the decor is modern and in good condition. 
I asked about Off Street Parking & was given a parking space near the bottle shop & there were security cameras to keep a watch on mine and other vehicles. 
When I did get to my room there was a clean towel, soap and "Ear Plugs" & I thought I was in for a loud night - I didn't need the ear plugs. For some the lights outside my room may be an issue but not for me.
My room had a heather but the bed was warm and comfortable. When next I need a bed in or near Strathfield I'll be booking a room at Whelan's Strathfield Hotel.

Clean & Comfortable, Cold beer & great food.

I called into the Strathfield (Whalens) Hotel after watching the Parramatta VS Wests Tigers NRL match for dinner last night and a quite beer.

I have to say their customer service needs improving. The Asian barmaid served several people before me, even though I was waiting there first like a Lowe's dummy for a good 5 minutes. When I mentioned this to her, she shrugged her shoulders, didn't really respond and was some what dismissive in her demeanor. She also had great difficulty in understanding what I wanted to drink and taking my dinner order. I wasn't the only person this happened too. I had a simple rump steak and chips that cost $25, which was average. I thought a schooner of Great Northern at $6.60 was too expensive.     

Another thing, I was surprised at being asked to remove my Eels cap soon after entering, especially since it is a pub. I'd be interested to know if they let tradesmen or other blue collar workers in there wearing a blue singlet. It doesn't really matter because I won't be going back, 

Service needs a bit of improving and food only average

Stayed 2 nights basic accommodation ( no air con) and steps to get to the rooms ( no lift) but clean and tidy. Share bathroom but not a big deal. Strathfield station across the road and easy to get a train.
