I stayed here for one night whilst visiting my dad at a local nursing home. The room was beautiful and clean with everything I needed. Bed was super comfortable and I was made to feel very welcome. The new owners were friendly and very accommodating and the Old Colony Inn will be my first preference for future visits.

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay

Stopped in here while cycling the Tassie Trail. The new owners are incredibly hospitable and the rooms are charming. But the real show stopper was the breakfast. Vegan and vegetarians are very well catered for with coconut yoghurt, stewed plums and granola, sourdough toast with spread, plus home make beans with salad and a mountain of avocado.

A very quaint and very old inn with beaut rooms furnished with period and antique style furnishings. Rooms are spacious and moderately quiet with a little passing traffic. The antiques collection is not for sale but well worth the look with some very interesting pieces.
Owners, Lydia and James have a very appealing and comforting charm.

Simply lovely and very historic.

I thoroughly recommend The Old Colony Inn. It is a historic building dating from 1835, within a ten minute walk of the centre of town and five minutes to the lovely banks of the River Derwent. We were welcomed warmly by James and Lydia, given a complimentary souvenir lavender bag, and then asked our preferences for breakfast. We stayed in the suite which was roomy, with two beds (queen and single), en suite and delightful views to the garden. There were lovely touches like bunches of fresh flowers, tea, coffee, milk, biscuits, as well as port and sherry (on the house). Heaps of pillows to make one comfy, arm chairs, side tables, suitcase racks, etc. For those who wanted something to read, there were novels and magazines to choose from on the landing outside in the usual ‘leave-one, take one’ manner. Breakfast was a generous ‘continental-style’, self-served in the room. The fridge had been loaded with quality yogurt, fresh and stewed fruits, home-made jams and marmelade, Vegemite, honey, bread, cereals, juice, you name it! It was obvious that James and Lydia care deeply about their guests well-being and welfare, and consider one like Family! James has interesting historical anecdotes to share. 

Downstairs there are Knick-knacks to explore. The garden is a lovely spot to relax with a book and a pot of tea. 

Book directly with the owners, Lydia and James, as then they avoid paying fees. We highly recommend The Old Colony Inn - so much character and love in it!

So much care taken, and a warm welcome!

We stayed two wonderful nights at the Inn, and Lydia was a perfect host in this heritage property. Parking is on the street but just a short walk to the rooms on a level above the dining room and display area/museum.  The room was lovely, with all amenities thoughtfully provided and a squeaking floor.  However the gem here is the collection of artefacts, crockery etc that have been accumulated over many years. Don't miss the huge dolls' house!  And they love to receive direct bookings.

History, Hospitality and Comfort

Last minute booking and Lydia was very kind. A very old fashioned,
Old style decor inn but the service was lovely from Lydia and included breakfast. Easy walk into town to eat dinner at the Shanghai Chinese - recommended by Lydia. Lovely short walk down to the Derwent river and a beautiful early morning walk along the river amongst majestic old trees.

But it is interesting and fun.  Our room was big enough and the bed was excellent. We had to leave early so breakfast was supplied to our room and it was very comprehensive and more than we could eat.

The bathroom could do with a shelf or two , and some hooks.

This place is certainly different and is fine for a night.


Like being in a museum.

For a one stay, as this was a one night visit to Hobart we chose the Old Colony Inn, and it was a good choice. As others have stated, the hosts are an asset to this establishment, and it's like stepping back in time, or staying in some of the small village inns in the UK, we loved it and we will return.

Service, a great welcome and a comfortable bed

I recently staid over night at the Old Colonial Mill in New Norfolk Tasmania.  What a wonderful surprise! Spotlessly clean, excellent room and service. Only problem was I couldn't stay longer!  So much history and character.  I will definitely go back first chance I get.

Old world wonder full of charm

We arrived at New Norfolk on a cold Monday evening. We were warmly welcomed by Lydia and shown the layout to this quaint inn. Our room was nicely heated for our arrival. The Inn is pretty well the only dining option at New Norfolk on a Monday night as other places are closed. We had hearty meals of lamb shanks and steak with freshly cooked vegetables and a quaffable bottle of red. All for $80!. With all the old wares and artifacts around I expected that the place would be covered by dust. Not so, the place was squeaky clean. The bed was super comfy and our room next to the road was surprisingly quiet. Thank you Lydia for a wonderful stay.
