This place looks nothing like the photos.  It was dirty and rundown and the carriages needed a complete revamp to make them half way decent.  The kitchenette was okay but the rest was awful.  Bed and mattress was very old, aircon didn't work properly as filters were so filthy they had spiders in them, so nights and early mornings were cold.  The shower had mould in the grout and we had 2 thin bath towels to last 3 days. There was nowhere to dry the towels which was very annoying.  The windows were so dirty you could hardly see out of them.
The whole place looked dirty and rundown and in our opinion very over priced. We will never stay there again.

There are chooks, kangaroos, alpacas and sheep gadding about as well as little wild bunnies.

The rail carriages are pretty basic but also quite quaint and comfortable 
Dogs are welcome but need to be kept on a lead

I believe that children would  really enjoy a holiday here.

It was cool in the morning when we stayed in mid September but the carriage was warm and cosy
You can have a cuppa on the little verandah attached to your
carriage and just chill
Cottages are also available

Wonderful Unique Memorable

We stayed here for a few nights in September 2019. 
We were looking for natural tranquil surroundings and somewhere to take our dogs with us. 
We found it. 
So lovely and peaceful surrounded by farm animals. 
We stayed in the 2 bedroom cottage. 
It has everything you need and only a couple of kms from Dunsborough. A nice fire to keep the place warm. 
Definitely recommend if you want to go semi off the grid. 
Would love to come back. 

Serenity supreme 

This is another return to Dunsborough Farm and Rail Carriages which says a lot in itself. Most of our families took their dogs who are made to feel very welcome (an extra $10 I believe for each visit). We again stayed in the Farmhouse which is a little bit more isolated from the rest of the cottages. It’s the adults retreat for our group. The advantage of the Farmhouse is that it has a full kitchen and 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. I bedroom is the master with ensuite. Bathroom amenities are limited to soap but all towels, bathmats, linen etc is provided. Some of the furniture is a little worn but this isn’t a 5 class getaway, rather a less sterile place you want to go to for a rural getaway with all the advantages of being very close to Dunsborough and tourist attractions in the area. You’re not afraid of getting dirt on your shoes here. Outside there is a verandah that wraps around half the house with a family size outside dining table and a smaller two seat setting as well as a BBQ. Kangaroos are regularly seen in the nearby paddocks too!

We're back!

We chose Dunsborough Rail Carriages due to location and price. Anyone trying to find accommodation in Dunsborough/ Yallingup will know just how overpriced it is. We visit frequently because our daughter lives there. We have stayed at most places, even high end ones. Cape Lodge is crazily expensive but of course beautiful. it's hard to justify spending $600 +, so lately I have looked for more reasonable places. Dunsborough Rail Cottages is on farm acreage only 5 minutes from town. The surrounds are gorgeous (see photo I took outside our door).The alpacas, chickens and kangaroos are lots of fun. And how can you argue about being next door to Simmo's Ice Cream (nirvana)? Our rail carriage was clean with basic amenities. The only toiletry is 1 piece of hand soap, but nothing else so be sure to bring everything you need. There is crockery, a microwave, minibar and a kettle too. So really it would not be fair to complain when paying only $145 per night (high season). They also have larger cottages which cost more, if you are ready to pay more.The property is well managed too. So if you can adjust to the basic necessities in life (no internet) , I can recommend this place.

Budget accommodation close to everything

The interior is clean but a little dated (The Lonely Planet Guide wrote in its guide that the wagons were being renovated), the floor is quite damaged. However, there is no reception. There is a board outside with the names of the people, the housing allocated, a plan and the key. After more than 3 weeks in W.A. this is the first time we have not had a reception which is our surprise.

The wagon is big enough for two and a quiet terrace.

I took a visit to the wine region and used the Rail Carriages as a two night base. Minutes from the centre of Dunsborough, I was greeted with a very friendly welcome and offer of maps, info and assistance. Very reasonably priced and away from the road, I had a couple of peaceful evenings watching the rabbits roaming past while the alpacas were an entertaining sight. The rail carriage was great with a very comfortable bed and spacious en suite, as well as a well-equipped kitchen for simple meals. The air-conditioned comfort and furnishings made it ideal for a single or couple. Cottages are available on site for family groups and it is a family and pet friendly venue. You can hand feed the animals, listen to the kookaburras and watch the kangaroos. A great spot to stay!

Olde World relaxation

Located close to Dunsborough but quiet and peaceful.
Well located for visiting Margaret River and a bit different from your resort holiday. 
Great to bring kids along as you have chickens, Alpacas and sheep, which you can help feed every morning.
We arrived and were greeted by the friendly host at the house, willing to answer any questions and provide guidance on the region.
The rail carriage is beautifully old style and has a simple, rustic charm and is equipped with everything you need. Comfy bed and pillows. 
It’s great value for money.


Rustic and Charming

We took a trailer, it was a very original accommodation with all the comforts we wanted: shower, equipped kitchen and air conditioning (necessary in summer). The park is very large with rabbits and wild kangaroos outdoors. Domestic animals that can be fed every day on specific times. A good location 8 minutes from downtown Dunsborough and 5/10 minutes from the beautiful beaches. The beaches are truly beautiful, crystal clear water, and rarely frequented even in summer. Probably the most beautiful beaches on the southwest coast of Australia. And 300 m from the trailer park, an excellent glacier with a huge children's playground!
