We were looking for a place to stay in the Salzkammer in a very short time, and we found the pension sundial. The stay was very nice, room and breakfast okay, the host was extremely friendly and welcoming.

Nice short holiday with hiking on the Tauplitzalm

Stayed here a couple of nights on a motor tour of Germany and Austria. Very good value accommodation and comprehensive breakfast. Lively staff are always a good sign. Pleasant bar scene. Wifi needs sorting out very unreliable during my stay.

House on the Hill

The experience was quite relaxing. We had a lot of fun with the other guests. The service provided us with all the necessary requirements.
We stayed in the summer and there was plenty to do. The environment around is also great. You can explore the mountains for example.

Cozy and homelike experience

We've been coming to this hotel for many years with a good attitude. The directors and staff are very friendly. We always feel very welcome and very at home. The food is good... drink too. The hotel is in a good location at the valley station (only 5 minutes walk) and the exit is to the hotel and apres ski bar. The Tuaplitzalm is a small ski resort suitable for families who seem to leave their children alone.

A good family hotel where we felt at home

The hotel is well run, has good food and the great advantage is that the valley station of the Tauplitz railway is 2 minutes away.The shaft is sufficiently large and easily accessible.

We've been driving to this hotel for seven years. Friendly and helpful managers, as well as the excellent location at the elevator (50 meters) and Loipe (100 meters) characterize this hotel. The drive to the house is optimal. Food is sufficient and good. Only the ski room is narrow. Very family friendly atmosphere.

Very well located hotel

Comparing to the Seebacherhof hotel that is for the same price, the food quality at Sonnenuhr is a level lower. The WIFI is charged and the connection is questionable. The sauna is uncomperable, no room to relax, no outdoor cooling either.
Just the location is great, at the walking distance to the ski-lift.

Sonnenuhr Tauplitz

It's a friendly breakfast hotel with a very kind boss and a little helper. In winter you can also eat there. The lovely full decoration goes at the expense of the housewife's father, which we really liked that a man spells so many nice things. The breakfast was enough and a very good selection of food and drink was offered. And it's definitely a super great hotel for skiers and other athletes. The elevator to the Alm is not far away. Simple super dreamlike location.

Friendly breakfast hotel

Together with my partner, we visited Hotel Pension Sonnenuhr for 2 nights in March 2013 for a ski holiday and can only say we enjoyed every minute of our stay in Tauplitz very much. During our review, we follow a structure that focuses on the main factors one should generally consider when selecting in which hotel to stay.

1. Arrangement: We visited Tauplitz following my personal experience there a few years ago thus we organized our trip directly with the hotel, without any 3rd party intermediary involved. As far as I was concerned (primarily my partner managed the process), organizing our stay went smooth and we have been in contact with the owner / general manager of the hotel from the very beginning.

2. Arrival: Tauplitz is located 460 km from Budapest that takes 4.5 hours of travel by car, under normal conditions. Since this was not the first time for me in Tauplitz, we have been pretty comfortable with how to get there. However, due to seriously adverse weather conditions (heavy snow that finally resulted in a “snow catastrophe” in Hungary), arrival was anything but smooth (the trip took for us 7 hours). In spite of our late arrival (9:00 PM), we have been warmly welcomed by the owner / general manager and the nice and helpful staff who were ready to provide us with diner “fresh from the oven” in spite that diner time was by far over. Besides this hospitality, no specialty to mention. Since the hotel is located nearby a relatively large parking space, parking as well as moving all around was comfortable (however also due to the heavy weather conditions, we could use the hotel’s parking space only next day). One will find a relaxing, fairy tale environment from the arrival already.

3. Accommodation: Since we have been travelling 2 without our kid on board, we booked a normal room simply. The room was fairly well equipped and cleaned however had a bit of an “old school” style. Besides, it ensured an astonishingly beautiful view at the neighboring mountains as well as at the parking space of our car for the first night (next day we could use that of the hotel). At first, a view at the parking space might sound surprising and not that much desirable, but the mountain view compensated undisputedly. Besides that, not much to mention on the rooms since the hotel’s web page explains everything in detail.

4. Food and beverage: We chose half board and the food was absolute fair with equaling quality of the breakfast and that of the diner. For breakfast, one could choose from a variety of buffet elements including continental as well as English features, fresh fruits, juices thus a fair selection of meals to choose from. For diner, one could choose from a menu, containing 2 different soups, various salad selections in buffet style, 2 different main courses and 2 different deserts. When talking about food, quality as well as quantity was consistent and absolute fair.

5. Attractions: Since we stayed for 2 nights only and were rather off skiing the whole day, did not have much time to check out the attractions the hotel and the surrounding area offers:
- Wellness: Since we did not use this feature, cannot really tell much about it, but from the outside, it looked OK, offering a great benefit following a long day of skiing.
- Tauplitz ski slopes: since the hotel is located literally at the main ski lift, it offers a great comfort for skiers. Furthermore, given that there is enough snow, one can ski down exactly till the entrance of the hotel, being also great fun and very much important. As we were primarily prepared for skiing, could not imagine a better place to choose. The hotel has a nice, warmly heated ski room for technical equipment that can be kept dry and warm throughout the night being therefore nicely prepared for the next day’s challenges. Finally, our March special offer included 2 days of skiing pass also.

All in all, we spent 2 wonderful nights in this nice hotel. Can only recommend Hotel Pension Sonnenuhr to anybody having the opportunity to travel there for skiing. Will enjoy it for sure.

Casual Austrian ski holiday

Well this is my 3rd time at the Hotel Pension Sonnenuhr and it gets better every time I go there. What makes the hotel stand out from the rest is Jack and Maria. They have to be the most welcoming hosts in any hotel that I have been to. They take the time to know all their guests, join you at the bar for a drink or two (even offering you a free sample of their homemade schnapps). The rooms are large and clean, the breakfast bar is always well stocked and the staff are always so helpful. The hotel is only a few yards from the main ski lift which is also a bonus.

Tauplitz is a hidden gem with some of the best snow conditions that you will come across. Its very much attracts Austrian residents so you wont find many British people here....which is great. However, they are starting to hear about about it so get here sooner rather than later. I also have to say that all the local residents that I have met during my time here, are just so friendly and always happy to help. 

No doubt we will continue to visit Tauplitz and the Hotel Sonnenuhr again.
