Don’t let the review title scare you; this place must be seen to be believed. What started as ruins in 2010 has been steadily improved through repairs and the addition of the most eclectic decor imaginable. There’s no theme to this castle.  Its 12th century parts are austerely medieval, while its renovations include modern bathrooms, belle epoque decor, and an eccentric collection of art, armor, and taxidermy.  Where else can you find a moose head above a suit of armor?

Every room in the hotel is different. We stayed in #11, a suite that consisted of a large royal bedchamber and a small monk’s cell, plus two bathrooms.  It was comfortable, entertaining, and quiet despite the fact that beds, floors, and doors all squeaked loudly. A once in a lifetime experience. 

Food at the restaurant/tavern was delicious, although breakfast options were limited.  Service was fine, and the entire castle staff was friendly and helpful the whole time we were there.  So that’s all good.

If you’re looking for a thematically consistent castle experience, you won’t find it here.  But if you want a quirky experience at a castle that is half finished, half restored, and bizarrely decorated and furnished, a night at Plankenstein will be an unforgettable experience.

Plankenstein -the Frankenstein of castles

The place itself is just wonderful. The castle tower we had, was probably the most charming room I've ever booked and the view was breathtaking. We truly loved it. Also booked the crime dinner and it was also a very cool event. Totally recommend both. Only drawback was the food and especially the breakfast, which was below expectations in quality and in selection. Still recommend going there. The "Mostviertel" area is worth exploring too.

Have been in my trips in many places with loads of interesting things but none of them has the unique style and interesting decorations that this castle has,the building is still in construction and i hope those people are safe there as that seems dangerous and high.The rooms seem clean and the hot water is abundant and i must say the service was pretty ok but mate a coffee should come always hot not cold and really improve that coffee machine with an Italian one ,people in your hotel will appreciate your place more,cake was to my surprise a delight but the best part of this establishment is......drumbs....drumbs.....the freaking WC!!!!What a discovery and a pleasure to spend time there ,yuppy.The room for number 2 is wat too small but anyway jm here to promote this place we have near by .Good luck with bussiness

What a lovely WC

A great drive to get here and it's worth it. A real 11th century castle that has been updated and worked on over the centuries, and it is still being updated and loved. I think that it has had a lot of attention recently and lots of creative thinking has gone into everything here.

The approach is fab, and the courtyard, bar, shop and all the communal areas are lovely. The welcome was very warm and the drink was much appreciated. The food was great and the breakfast was whatever you wanted - wherever you wanted it! We could choose where to sit and drink, where to eat dinner and where to have breakfast. Everything felt very relaxed and customer orientated.

The room was lovely with lots of little touches of creativity - dragon motif was amazing. The bathroom was very modern. Couple of little niggles that were not important at all - the bathroom door was very difficult to unlock but we just didn't lock it after that, and the bed was quite sweaky (which kept us giggling all night, but I hope it didn't keep any other guests awake!).

The grounds are an absolute treat. There is a walkway out to the woods along the cliff which led to all sorts of wonders - a theatre, eating (feasting?) area, stone table (was wondering if we would see Aslan), little houses with dragons coming out of the chimney, lots more.

We had a great time here and hardly noticed that there was no phone or internet connection (not use to being cut off from the outside world, but it was worth it). We are looking forward to coming back in a while and see what other treats have been added.

If you are expecting a sanitised plastic hollywood fairytale with 5 star luxury, please don't come here. However, if you like proper fairytales (think Grimm), real history and a fabulously unique experience, get yourself here!

What an interesting place!

It is hard to rate this place as a hotel without taking in the fact that this is an actual medieval castle, however I plan to rate it as a hotel. Being a castle in the middle of nowhere, there are lots of modern hotel features that are impractical and not available (TV, Wifi, mobile phone reception).

We arrived after dark on a cold and foggy evening. There was a Christmas market at the castle and cars were parked everywhere, so it was difficult for our small group tour to find the driveway to the castle entrance. Being a castle, all rooms are different. Our room (23) was reached via a lot of stairs - I counted more than 90. Happily, the hotel staff delivered our cases to the room.

The room was very basic and contained two beds and a table & 2 chairs in an alcove under the window. There was also a wardrobe built into the wall. The bathroom was small but modern and the toilet was built into the medieval garderobe - a nice touch! Our beds were foam rubber mattresses on a solid base with a doona. The east facing window had no curtain, however since it was Winter that wasn't a problem - could be an issue in Summer though. We had 2 thin and rough towels, no hand towels. The door to the room would only stay shut if we deadlocked it and the door to the bathroom would only shut properly if I leaned on it hard.

We had dinner in the tavern on the courtyard level - very good! Breakfast was in the same location - more basic, but they made a nice omelette.

Staff were all helpful and friendly.

After photos we saw, we just had to come. We came late night,and it was snowing throug all our way, and that was very romantic so we stopped in front of castle and kissed. We were already happy, in front of us was we saw that there are some works on the entrance but we didnt bother at all, it is an old castle and it requires fixes all the time.
When we entered, very pleasant and cool guy Khalil was our host, that cared for us through all our visit to castle. As it was late night, we still didint went to sleep without a dinner, which was fabolous and vintage royal wit perfect service and pleasant staff guy Khalil with lot of patience and understandig for all of our questions. 
Castle is located on a hill, and the view from our beautifull, big, and well heathed room was just unbeliveble, we really felt royal and special. Fireplace gives you even more romantic feeling.
If you thinking about going there, dont think aneymore, take your love ones and go.

One of my highlights in Europe was getting to stay at Berg Plankenstein! How often does one get to have this experience? We were in a rented car, and it was a pretty drive and definitely off the beaten path. Granted, it is a work in progress, but folks we are talking about a place that is 800 years old. There are lots of stairs so one needs good mobility. Our family rented three rooms and they were not luxury, but all very clean and comfortable. It was rather cool outside but each room had individual heat registers and we were very comfortable. The bar and the restaurant were outstanding, featuring a great menu and the food was excellent. We had dinner there both nights and couldn't have been more pleased. The breakfast was included in the price and it was a huge spread and also outstanding. The staff was extremely friendly, courteous and helpful. One thing that might be of interest is the fact that you need to pay cash, no credit card since they don't have good internet connection. I saw this when I booked and confirmed with the hotel before we left home so it wasn't a problem for us, but it could be a problem if you weren't carrying appropriate cash. Again....I loved this place and would be thrilled to stay at this castle again!

Loved staying in an ancient castle!

This place was expensive for what was offered. It felt like a badly run theme park. The architecture was impressive however spoilt by crammed interior full of random items. The journey over on the bikes from a little village called Scheibbs was nice however, as the route is very scenic!
