This place is wonderful!  The Joergleggerhof is located in a gorgeous little valley about 8 Km outside of Lienz, the tiny provincial capital of the Austrian province of Osttirol.  Both the location and the farm are absolutely lovely - when you are tired of museums, fancy hotels with "corporate" and "chain" amenities, and you just want to chill out and reconnect as a family while doing really fun things in the outdoors, then this is where you come!  :-)

Both Lienz (only 50,000 inhabitants) and Nikolsdorf are located in a gorgeous valley in the middle of the Austrian Dolomite mountains, a little over 3 hours drive from Munich and Vienna, 2 hours from Salzburg, and in our case 4 - 5 hours from Venice.  The valley itself reminded me of northeastern Vietnam, it is so stunningly gorgeous with stark, rocky, snow-topped mountains on one side, and lush green mountains with Austrian farm houses perched like little goats on the other, and a lush, green agricultural valley in the middle.  You just want to spend a day lying in the grass taking it all in!  The sense of "community" among the folks who live in Nikolsdorf and in Lienz was palpable, one of the things we really loved about the place - our teenage daughter observed that in the major cities where we've been you'd worry about being mugged or getting lost, here in Nikolsdorf or Lienz you don't worry about any of that and, instead, you just might have the farmer next door come up to you on the street and offer you some freshly baked pie, this is a wholesome place where the world is still ok and people know each other and get along.

If you are looking for an urban vacation with lots of people, "standard" entertainment, and cookie-cutter attractions, then stay away, this is not for you.  If you really want to get to know Austria and the wonderful folks who live here while getting out into nature and reconnecting with your family and spending time talking, eating wonderful food, and not spending a heck of a lot of money, then this is absolutely the place for you!

The Joergleggerhof is run by the Hanser family, it is a working family farm with horses, cows, bunnies, cats, pigs and chickens.  The mother cat had had kittens and our kids just couldn't have enough of them bringing them back to our apartment, we found kittens in our shoes and luggage...  :-)  The kids roamed the farm and explored the barns, gawking at the animals (a little different than living in a major American city!).  The Hansers are really friendly, we chatted every day about their valley, Austria, the United States, their and our kids, and they patiently explained their farm to our electronics-obsessed kids for whom "nature" was something decidedly unusual.

In terms of accommodations, we had a 2 BR apartment with full kitchen, 2 full baths and a living room with cable TV (great for watching the European Cup soccer matches every evening at 9 pm) and blazingly fast internet (cable and WiFi) so I could clear out my client e-mails every morning and evening and relax the rest of the day.  The Hansers provided breakfast although after the first day or two we just got food at a local supermarket ("Spar", 6 Km or less than 10 minutes down the road, they even take American Express) and made our own breakfast, lunch and dinner, eating like a normal family in our temporary "home".  One night we grilled steaks on the Hanser's outdoor grill while the mountains on either side loomed over us, it was spectacular - mountains, cold Austrian beer, and juicy steaks...  :-)  Mrs. Hanser also did 5 loads of our laundry, returning everything to us neatly folded in a hamper, which was great as we were here in the mid-point of 6 weeks in Europe. The real "shock" is the price - EUR 68 / night - we spent less in a whole week here than we did in a day in Venice!  In terms of quality, we had more space than we did in virtually any hotel we stayed in and "our" apartment was spotlessly clean and nicer than most of the Starwood, Hilton, Hyatt, etc. hotel suites that we've stayed in for many times the nightly price, while Mrs. Hanser provided much more "service" in a very personal, friendly, warm way than you would expect in most "corporate" chain hotel environments.

In terms of things to do, this is a place to connect with the outdoors:

     1.  The Hanser's have maybe a dozen bicycles of all different sizes, we found bikes for everyone in our family and then did a very easy, gorgeous 16 Km roundtrip ride along the Drau river, through woods and across farmland, the whole time on mostly paved bike paths (so no traffic worries with the kids) to the next little town where we had lunch on the town square before riding back "home".  The next day we rode in the other direction towards Lienz, inhaling the clear mountain air, again on paved bike paths along the Drau river, greeting other bikers as they passed every now and again.  If you were really ambitious, then you could bike onwards to Italy and continue for hundreds of kilometers, we were not that ambitious, but we had a lovely time.

     2.  We spent a day with the "Osttirodler Sommerrodelbahn", an "alpine coaster".  You basically take a cable car up the mountain, then ride down again in a gravity-pulled "alpine coaster", it's like a roller coaster in which you're in a little car by yourself, racing through the pine forest and then in spirals over the cows in the pasture until you come to rest at the bottom.  I had the best speed in our family according to the speed camera, 43.7 Km/hr...  :-)   Check out their web site and look at the photos, this is good, clean fun for the whole family, the kids will love it and it'll bring out the kid in the adults too!  On the second day we walked 45 minutes up the mountain and "earned" our ride down, that was spectacular, we also had schnitzel at the "alm" right next to the top station of the "Osttirodler Sommerrodelbahn" and walked 10 minutes further up the mountain to chase tadpoles at the edges of their little reservoir.  On the next day we spent several hours in the "Kletterpark Lienz" (located next to the upper station of the "Sommerrodelbahn", again they have a website), working our way through the obstacle courses.  This is not a "disney" version of an obstacle course, you are secured by harnesses the entire time, but you really have to work out - the attendant explained that you have to "earn" the right to fly the many, couple of hundred foot zip lines through the treetops by first climbing up there.  If you want to conquer your fear of heights, do something totally different that you won't find in the U.S. (completely safe, but without the idiotic liability waivers you'll find back home), then come here - it's a real physical challenge, great fun, and at the end of the day you've earned your schnitzel.

    3.  You also have to earn your "mountain legs" here...  On another day we drove most of the way up to the Hochsteinhütte (again, it has a web site), then had schnitzels with cold beer, before hiking onwards.  The mountains and pristine little villages as you climb above the clouds are just glorious.  The next day we drove part of the way up the "Zettersfeld" mountain on the north side of Lienz, with spectacular vistas of Lienz, the valley, and the Dolomites on the other side, before walking on for a couple of hours through the woods, farms and ski cabins before having lunch at one of the mountain restaurants in the middle of the dormant ski lifts.  If you want to do something completely healthy while bonding as a family, this is the place to come!  :-)

Anyway, you may have noticed that we had a good time here - I can't find enough good things to say about the Joerglegger Hof, the hospitality of the Hanser family, and the great "outdoors" things we got to participate in while we were here!
