We have just returned from a ten day summer stay in Das Hochegg and wanted to share with you what a positive experience it was. We are keen mountaineers and have been coming to Obergurgl for our summer trips for about five years and Das Hochegg is our favourite place to stay so far. 

Our room was a perfect size for the two of us, and was clearly recently refurbished with a noticeably premium finish in the bathroom and bedroom. The beds have comfortable medium-firm mattresses with a soft mattress topper and the bathroom has a large shower with excellent water pressure.

The living area is small but a perfectly workable size.  The kitchenette contains a microwave, two electric hobs, a fridge, dishwasher and a coffee machine.  There is also a Bodum filter carafe for those like us who prefer to use fresh ground coffee. The knives in the kitchen were sharp, which is a rarity for a holiday let, and we found the facilities perfectly good for cooking our evening meals. Sometimes you have to be a little inventive, juggling pans on the two hobs if you are cooking something more complicated but that is part of the fun of being on holiday, right?

The apartment and the rest of the building is impecably clean, even by traditionally high Austrian standards.  Sandra, the current generation of the Aste family to operate the guesthouse, is kind and welcoming and clearly has an interest in tourism and hotel management and how to make guests feel welcome and at ease. Sandra's partner Gabriel is a well respected mountain guide, whilst he was away with a client in Switzerland during our stay, he can be available to take guests on ski tours in winter or on mountaineering days in the summer.

We are also keen skiers and whilst we visited in the summer we thought that the location of the property would be ideal for winter visits, seemingly in a perfect ski in/out location.  The boot room was spotless with good sized boot dryers.

For those that have not visited Obergurgl in the summer, expect a very quiet and laid back vibe.  All of the sports shops appeared to be open, with a choice of two small supermarkets and a handful of excellent restaurants at your disposal. Larger supermarkets and a greater variety of shops are available twenty minutes away in Soelden although we found everything we needed in Obergurgl, including some technical climbing gear that we needed.

There aren't many places in Europe with a comparable range of walking, hiking (of all difficulties) and climbing (on rock and glacier) but without the crowds of the other traditional mountaineering centres such as Zermatt and Chamonix. On one day we spent 11 hours hiking and climbing including a glacier crossing to a 3300m summit literally without seeing a single other person, although we did also see some vultures, eagles, chamois and ibex that day.  Where else in Western Europe can you do that whilst having good amenities on your doorstep?

If we had to make one complaint, and it is a push, we'd say that the internet speed needs to be improved. Unfortunately, with our jobs, we need to be occasionally in contact with the office and the internet speed is not usable for anything other than basic browsing.  If we're honest, that probably did us a favour and gave us the perfect excuse to relax although you will have difficulty using a Chromecast or Firestick for Netflix etc if that's your thing.

All in all, very highly recommended.

A brilliantly located, friendly and welcoming family run apartment.

The house is in a very nice location, the apartments are also quite new and beautifully made. However, there seems to have been little emphasis on soundproofing here. A hearty laugh in the apartment was enough to make the landlord angry. We thought it was a shame, because you sometimes want to have fun on vacation and even at midnight. (We didn't have music, we probably wouldn't even have thought about it.) All in all, it's a nice place for families, for groups I wouldn't recommend it.

The Hochegg is a very nice, family-run hotel that's not right next to the ski slope. You just have to walk down the street and go skiing and then you're right at the valley station. Breakfast was a good choice of different juices and coffee/tea and sausage/cheese and whatever else the heart wanted. In the sauna we let our skier finish and rest.

We stayed here for our week of skiing in obergurgl. Sandra is very welcoming and made out stay very comfortable. We could easily access the slopes from the side of the hotel which was a big help. We had a room and flat which was a good combination. Everything was clean and tidy as one would expect. Breakfast is available for those in rooms but we paid 12 euros extra to have breakfast for the flat occupant too. The ski room is well positioned and spacious so getting from the room to slopes was quick. 

One thing to note is that if you had a room only a travel kettle would be advisable to have tea of the room, the flat had a kettle. Also to note is that there are no cards taken, which we solved by calling UK bank to make a IBAN transfer, or one can pay cash too. 

We would certainly recommend this accommodation. The photo is the view from the balcony. 

Excellent

This is a pleasant and friendly B&B just up a hill from one of the main gondolas at Obergurgl. The property has nice simple rooms, is very clean and the hosts are very welcoming. Breakfast is adequate, a little basic compared to other B&Bs I have been to around Austria but still has all you need. I would have given this B&B a higher rating but there is a big problem and that is parking. We stayed a full week and didn't get to park at our hotel a single day. Parking is a problem in Obergurgl and we were lucky we had friends staying at a neighbouring property so we could use theirs. 
There were no blinds on the window of our room and the curtains were thin, so it was light in the room, which was fine for us but some might not like that.
There is a sauna which you have to ask to use and there is a charge for dressing gowns (5 Euros!). The relaxation area is small and cold so I went back to my room afterwards. 
Overall pleasant and would consider staying again if the owners could guarantee my parking for the duration of my stay.

Friendly family run B&B

We were at the top of the hill with our family and we were in a split mind. It was a nice little boarding house with a good location (50m away from the ski resort, with snow you can almost drive back to the front door, you have to walk a bit to the elevator). However, there was a certain extra of love to convince us to come back again. Unfortunately, the kindness of the hosts depends on moodiness. That's unfortunate and very surprising for us. You didn't feel the heart, sometimes you had the feeling that you just had to be patient and a necessary pain to be friendly.

Stayed here for a week and every day was a pleasure. Rich breakfast sets you well for a day of skiing. Sauna, ski storage are all perfectly organized. And the family running this place can help with everything. 

Very nice place

We were in Hochegg for the second time and would like to spend New Year's Eve there again. The location is great. We have booked a comfortable double room with balcony. The rooms are very nice and comfortable. The room is cleaned every day. Breakfast is also sufficient and the sauna invites us to relax. Free parking for guests is located right in front of the house. We were always warmly welcomed by Mrs. Aste and we feel really comfortable in the Hochegg.

Excellent place, superior location for the skiers only 20 meters from the slope (really!!!) The stay was simply perfect!!!
Very good service level, excellent breakfast, ski room, sauna, very clean and friendly.

Best Ski Hotel location

A lot of Obergurgl shuts down for the summer season but we found a little gem for a couple of nights while touring the area on our motorbikes. Aste's Hochegg is at the top end of Obergurgl, just beyond the main Gondola (about 5 minutes down from the hotel, 10 minutes up!). 

Our room was small but very nice, as was the en suite shower room - plenty for what we needed this time but we commented it wouldn't be big enough if we were skiing as we'd have lots more stuff (there is a ski/boot room in the basement but we didn't look in there). The entrance and hallway smelt of cigarettes as seems to be the case all over Austria and Germany, but it was fine in our non-smoking room on the first floor. We had a balcony with a nice view of the mountain, parking was flat (the drive itself is steep but no need to drive/ride down it as parking is above), and we could see our bikes from room. Breakfast was nice, traditional continental cold buffet. Really friendly owner. 

We had our evening meals at the near by Pic Nic restaurant, there wasn't a lot of choice for evening meal and this one was good value. There is a bakery a 15 minute walk down towards the other end of the town which is well worth a visit. There are plenty of hikes and other summer activities from Obergurgl.
