Spending our aniversary in an old castle was a great idea. This place is almost 1000 years old, overlooking the wineyards of eastern Styria an really worth to visit. The rooms are furnished with real old pieces, only the bathroom is modern and state-of-the-art. But the best is the cousine. We had a wonderful and delightful 4-course gourmet dinner and wine from the winery of the castle owners. Absolutely recommendable!

Next to vineyard, set in a historic castle, beautiful views, discreet staff, loved everything about the place. Grounds are immaculately kept, food was exquisite in restaurant on site, highly recommended.

Romantic location, beautiful setting

Expensive, yes. but wow!  You definitely get your money’s worth.  Rooms are beautiful and the views are breathtaking.  If you can’t afford to stay there, at least get a cup of coffee or a glass of wine at their restaurant overlooking the valley.  The staff is very friendly and attentive.  Barbara and Christine, especially went above and beyond.  They have a winery down the hill where you can sample and buy wines, but the wines are also available for sale at the castle.  If you like red wines, be sure and try the Blauer Zweigelt. We had dinner inside at the hotel’s restaurant that evening because of the weather.  There was still a fabulous view from the window and the food was great.   There is an extensive breakfast offering.  It may have been a castle in some former life but now it is a wonderful high end Burghotel.  Family members are regularly around so it gives a personal attention feel.

Exceptional views and room is spendid.

This lovely old castle is full of history  but doesn’t look like a Disney castle that some might imagine. It sits high on a hill with vineyards and orchards and forest nearby and views forever, with a terrace to sit with a drink and enjoy the views - who could ask for more? We stayed for just one night and loved our room with antiques as decoration. We enjoyed a dinner with matching wines and a delightful young waiter with good English was able to explain the wines. We needed to leave early this morning to get to the airport in Vienna and they couldn’t have been more helpful - offering us breakfast before 7 when they usually did it from 8. The waitress we met in the morning was really friendly and nice and helpful with recommendations for walks on the property. Our apologies again for having to rush off so quickly! We’ll be back and will recommend to friends and family. 

An exceptional place to stay

If you are considering staying in this magnificent hotel, bear in mind that you are dealing with a hotel situated within the walls of an ancient castle begun in the 10th Century. While every effort has been made to modernize where it is possible and necessary (bathrooms etc.) without spoiling the historic heritage of the building, there will still be some features that remain “old” and original. This “old” is good and represents the dominant charm of the hotel. For those guests looking for elevators and modern "everything", this is not the place to stay. 
The 4.5 of 5 circle rating is well deserved and I personally find it should be a full 5 circles.
This property is part of the "Historic Hotels of Europe" group, which counts among its ranks "Castle Hotels and Mansions" in Austria (the majority), Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Croatia. There is a large selection of different kinds of historic hotels to choose from.
We based much of our trip in Austria around these hotels as they are generally reasonably priced (as 4 Star hotels go) for what they offer and most often in very good & beautiful locations. 

This hotel's website shows the rooms and features fairly well, though I find they do not do the rooms justice as they focus more on small details than the individual room as a whole. The detail pictures are wonderful - but do not tell the whole story. The hotel has nothing to hide; therefore I feel they are short-changing themselves with the limited selection of overall room photos.
The drive up to the castle is easy and breath-taking, but nothing in comparison to the views that welcomes the visitor after entering the courtyard and looking around at the valleys and hills below. Luckily, the parking lot is located just outside the castle gates.
We chose the HP (half pension) option with 4 or 5 course dinners (depending on the day of week), that is well worth the money instead of the B&B option which only includes a wonderful breakfast. Breakfast (buffet style) is served in a bright large room on the upper floor, while dinners are served downstairs in an intimate cosy vaulted cellar-like room. The restaurant is well-known locally and afar for its outstanding cuisine. 
The views from rooms are so unbelievable you almost think you are in a plane, esp. when there is low-lying fog carpeting the valleys and hills below. I am sure that every room is unique inside and out with views that will please any & every guest. We stayed in the mid-range “Ritterzimmer” (Category B) and thoroughly enjoyed it.
This hotel is a real “hidden treasure” just waiting to be discovered. I hope as they become well-known that they can maintain their personal touch. The staff speaks English and are very accommodating to guest’s needs. We would stay here again if in the area.

Majestic hilltop castle hotel

For some years now we are looking for Castle accommodations and we chose Kapfenstein because was on our way. We expected more. The place is nice with a good touch of medieval living but the first impression was off: we booked a junior apartment and they gave us a wooden "penthouse" built son the top of the Castle annex. There were 36 Celsius outside and 30 inside. Fortunately they had a cancellation and gave us a room in the Castle. The food was only average. All in all overpriced.
