I have now been to Mountain High twice and this was the second trip. It is the lower budget end of the market and you should remember that. 

The accommodation was reasonably basic with twin room and bunk beds and yes it can be smoky at times outside the pension. The food is only one choice of meal but my friend and I enjoyed it - good traditional Austrian fare. We didn't have a kettle or tea making facilities but there is a bar so we were very happy with that!! 

The pension is in an excellent location in the village just opposite the ski hire shop and a 5 minute walk to the ski school, supermarket and ski bus. The village itself is pretty and quiet though if you are with a tour company the reps will direct you to the parties and get togethers where you can mix with tourists, seasonaires and instructors.

The best thing about the location of the village if you ski well or at intermediate level and are willing to travel is that it is in the centre of so many ski areas. Steinplatte is a fantastic beginners and early intermediate location as is St Johann if the snow is good. Kitzbühel (Hannenkahm)  is reachable by bus and train and there is a bus to Fieberbrunn which is now part of Saalbach Hinterglemm. A bus or taxi will take you to Ski Welt. 

Do check the snow forecast if you are travelling as it is low altitude for a ski resort - I would be wary of travelling much before late December and after mid March but there is usually some snow (though it can be patchy at low levels) the rest of the time. The bus timetables are not easy - the ski bus timetable is limited but you can also get in free on the post bus if you are in ski gear so do your research! 

In summary, it is a cheap no frills option if you are happy to travel a bit to do your skiing and want a variety of pistes. For first and second timers and improvers this is quite simply the best place you will learn to ski. The village is set up for beginners so have a great time!! 


Good Low Budget option 

Hotel was very basic, more of a hostel really. My wife and I were "upgraded" to a quad room which meant we had a bunkbed covering the light switch and a double bed consisting of 2 single beds and 2 separate single duvets. 
The bathroom was very dated, held together with duct tape in places, and came with no amenities such hand soap or shower gel.
The food was pleasant and the staff very friendly however drinks were very expensive, soft drinks and tea was almost the same price as a pint of beer.

Basic

The hotel is very clean and the family that run it are very friendly. We had rooms 3 and 4 which are on the ground floor at the side and front. The better rooms with views are upstairs but there is no lift and you have to lug your stuff up there so these rooms suited us. 

There is some cigarette smells that waft up from downstairs early in the morning and we kept the window open during the day which cleared the air. If you don't like cigarette smoke I would suggest not staying here. The showers are OK but don't wait too long as the water went cold twice during our stay. There was also some gaffer tape holding our cubicle together. 

Both rooms had typical twin beds pushed together to form a double and bunk beds for kids if required. There is one cupboard for hanging stuff but not much room for folded clothes. The rooms are warm with radiators in bedroom and bathroom and generally comfortable. 

Meals are served downstairs in a communal area with a bar and sofa seating area. We tended to all eat dinner at around the same time so the atmosphere was good. 

Breakfast is continental style with cereals, yoghurt, toast, rolls, meats, cheeses and brioche. We also had scrambled egg and boiled egg some mornings. Plenty of tea and coffee is available together with juices. 

Dinner was served at the table and consisted of three courses with mainly soup as a starter, a variety of dishes for main course and a dessert. Much of this was home made and I would class a good wholesome food but there were few vegetables. They do cater well for vegetarians with a fish or vegetarian alternative. 

The hotel is situated a short walk from the local ski area of Kirchdorf and if you hire from the shop across the road from the hotel they take your kit to the storage at the lift station. It's a small ski area which I couldn't try as there was no snow. Get to the ski hire shop at 8am on the first day as it gets busy around 9am. 

You can get a free ski bus from the car park at Kirchdorf to St Johann and ski the larger area there. Again not much snow here so only skied one day here. The buses are limited so get a timetable so you are not hanging around. 

You can also get a ski bus to Steinplatte where the skiing was better as we had had some snow by then. There is one bubble up to the top and the skiing is limited but OK. 

From St Johann railway station (Bahnhof) you can get a free train to Kitzbuhel but make sure you get off at the Hahnenkamm lift station which is the second Kitzbuhel railway station. From the top of the lift get the cable car across the valley to Jochberg as there is plenty of skiing across there. There is a Postbus to Kitzbuhel that goes from Kirchdorf but it will cost you 3 euros. Didn't use this so cannot say how good it was. 

From St Johann railway station you can also get a free ski bus to Fieberbrunn. Take either bubble to the top and ski across into Saalbach and Hinterglemm where there is masses of skiing. Again busses aren't plenty and you need to watch the times. 

We would not have ordinarily skied outside of the Schneewinkle area lift pass but due to the lack of snow we upgraded to the all star pass for 40 euros which gave us access to all the other ski areas. It was worth it at the end of the day as we managed to do a lot of skiing even though it was mostly on man made snow. Apparently this is the first time in 40 years that there has been no snow at new year. 



Nice family run pension hotel. 

Loved this place. The views were incredible and the staff were very friendly. The food was quite nice. The rooms were very comfortable. Not sure if there is free wifi but you can pick up free wifi from the shop across the road. It's a 3 minute walk to an ATM and a short drive to activities like canyoning, paragliding and skydiving. Would definitely recommend this place to friends travelling to Kirchdorf in Tirol. The rooms at the front of the hostel at the front all share a communal balcony which is great if you're travelling in a large group.

Very cosy, friendly place to stay!

We have stayed at mountain high twice over two skiing seasons and found the hotel to be a home from home, it is close enough to all 3 main ski area's and only a ten minute walk to the ski School at Kirchdorf, the hospitality from the staff is just what's needed after a day on the sloops always friendly and warm, the food is good bulky food to fill you up. But for the more fussy eaters there are plenty of other places to eat in town.
The upstairs room with the balcony are the best rooms so at night you can sit out and enjoy a few drinks with friends and other guests.
Highly recommend for groups, and couples.
