The small hotel is located in the center of Mittelberg, with easy access to shops, restaurants and the bus service which runs every 10min. It is family-run, and the proprietress makes sure you feel welcome and tells you all about the place. One can tell the family looks after the property and constantly renovates and upgrades the hotel. Rooms are impeccable, breakfast boasts local and homemade stuff, and extras will be provided if you can't find it on the buffet. There is a newly added sauna and relaxation area which we didn't use.

Excellent!

In August 2017, we spent 12 days hiking in the Mathies guest house. The room with the south/west balcony was enough for 2 people - plenty of storage space for all kinds of things. The bathroom was very clean. Sauna in the house. Staff and owners are very friendly and helpful. Away from the main road and yet only 80 meters to the bus. Great hiking area. We (55/63) will definitely be staying here for the next hiking holiday.

Great guest house in great hiking location

We were at the Mathies Guesthouse in Mittelberg in Kleinwalsertal in October 2016. The guesthouse is off the main street and we had a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. The guesthouse is decorated with lots of wood and attention to detail. Our room was very quiet. The bathroom is modern and has a large, floor-like shower. Everything was very clean. In the afternoon you could make a free coffee. In the basement there is a small but sufficient sauna. For breakfast we were asked if and how we wanted to make our eggs. This breakfast buffet was varied and delicious. We can recommend the most delicious Mathies House.

I highly recommend it.

I wanted to go skiing again for a week at the beginning of April and look on the Internet for a good accommodation in Mittelberg. And look, there was a single room at Mathies' guest house that was free, even with a ski pass. So book and go. I was there very early because I had announced it on his website. I was very kindly received and my room was already ready. A very clean and well-maintained property.

Always worth a trip

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights in June 2015 in room 23  The room faced the town and the mountains.  The area is called Kleinwalsteral.

We were in Munich for a friend's wedding and then spent a week going around Bavaria

The hotel is run by a young family.  The proprietress was quite surprised to find out that we were from NYC.  Her English was very good.  However, I don't think there are too many English tourists in Mittleberg :)

The hotel and our room was nicely decorated.  It had a small fridge, table, chairs, balcony, wardrobe, small safe and bathroom with shower only.  See pics.

There is also a Sauna which we did not use and a storage room for skis / hiking equipment.  There is parking next to the hotel.

When we checked in we were given a pass that allowed us free access to different mountain lifts and the bus that went between towns.  This was a very pleasant surprise and it saved us some cash and we used it for 3 lifts.

The breakfast buffet was standard - cold meats, cheeses, fruit, yogurt, breads, museli, cereal, hard boiled eggs, coffee, tea, and juice.

Mountain lifts.  The first is a chair lit that is only a couple of minutes away.   It takes you part way up the mountain and there is a restaurant there called Sonna Alp.  There is also an easy hiking trail to a couple of more panoramic spots with cafes and then you can walk back or downhill back to town.

The second is a gondola that goes to Waldmendinger.  It is just a few minutes further walk into town.  This goes all the way up the mountain with spectacular views and from up there you can see Baad as well.

The third lift we did was in Reizlern (take the #1 bus right outside the drug store).  The bus ride does not take very long.  It is a very long gondola (almost 1000 m / 3300 ft altitude gain).  It has a panorama restaurant and multiple hiking trails.  Very scenic.

In town there is a sporting goods store, a large grocery, 3 or 4 restaurants and some other stores.  When you turn off the main road to go down to the hotel there is a drug store.  Everything is just a few minutes walk away.

We really enjoyed staying here and would happily come back again.  Enjoy your stay.

For those not used to traveling in Europe:
1) Rooms are smaller than in the US
2) Hotel ratings are different - generally a 4 star hotel in Europe would be 3 or 3.5 star in the US
3) Bathrooms usually have a shower or a bathtub but not usually both. If you have a preference check before you book
4) Queen / Double beds are two twins pushed together. The hotel can organize the room two different ways then depending on what is requested
5) Duvets are separate for each person - not one big one. Great if one of you is always hot and the other always cold
6) Pillows are flat - you'll have to double them over to prevent your head from hitting the mattress.
7) Common US breakfast foods are not usually served except maybe at larger chain hotels (oatmeal, pancakes, waffles). Eggs are usually hard boiled or scrambled - not omelettes.
8) If you're on a budget breakfast is included, get groceries and make sandwiches for lunch and then eat dinner out.
9) European public transit is very nice, clean, pleasant and efficient. If the schedule says 12:02 the train leaves at 12:02 so don't run late as it will already be gone!

Loved this place

We've been to Mathies' house twice this winter. Overall, we liked the accommodation very well. There are older and renovated rooms. We got an older one twice, but it was still fine because everything was very clean. The breakfast is completely adequate and delicious, we didn't miss anything. We haven't used the sauna, but I think it's pretty new too. We'll definitely be back in the valley soon.
