I admit I mixed up the hour of closing of the hotel and arrived exactly 55 minutes too late. In my defence we had been travelling for a while, stopping for one night in several places on our way and as the hotel doubles as a restaurant I probably expected it to be open till later but failed to check it. However, the personnel did not bother to contact me either earlier or during the day and/or offer some solution such as leaving the keys. They apparently felt OK just taking my money. Fortunately, I was able to find another place to stay for the night nearby.

If you are late they will not bother to contact you and they close early 

Stayed just one night, but really enjoyed the centrally located place. Was easy and close to walk into town. 
Owners/staff was really friendly - also in the evening it was lovely to sit in the restaurant having a chat with locals. 
The room was very clean, the bedding was remarkably soft, The parking places were really practical and the breakfast was sufficient. For a short stay a real recommendation.

what started with a family getogether soon included friends and with a delicious home cooked style meal and dessert conversations became lighthearted and joyful. what a great team which served what seemed effortless and easy and took good care of us bunch.

Reviews are pretty much spot on.  Off the beaten path but worked in a pinch when no other rooms were available for the weekend...I walked in the rain from my other Pension because they were full up for the weekend.  Very reasonable rate but do not expect much of a breakfast.

A good second choice

We were a group of five cyclists, riding the Enns Valley  cycle path through Austria, and we chose to stay here, while passing through Steyr. While it might not be everyone's "cup of tea"  for us , it was perfect.

For a start of it wasn't at the top of a hill, and with our bikes, it was a pleasant ride into town. They had a garage for parking our bikes overnight, and the meals were wholesome and reasonably priced. 

If you want to meet the locals, get a good nights sleep in a quiet neighborhood, this is a great choice.  We had a very entertaining conversation with a shoe shop owner that will stay in our memories.

Genuine Austrian Hospitality

I absolutely loved Steyr, a lot more than I expected I would, but if I go back I'd probably select a different hotel.  The house and room were dark and pretty smoky/smelly, with country-style furnishings.  We stayed in Room 4 on the second floor.  The room was good-sized, warm, with a small table and chairs, TV, and newly remodeled large bathroom.  There is a small parking lot in the back of the house.  Location was not great - it was about a 15-20min walk from the Steyr center.  The breakfast was probably the worst of the hotels we stayed at on our 10-day trip - rather than a buffet, there is a small amount of cheese, meat and bread delivered to the table.  The staff were a little awkward - the woman who greeted us at the house spoke English pretty well but wasn't extremely friendly, and the woman who served us breakfast didn't speak English at all and had to knock on our door to request payment for the room before she had to catch a train.  Tip - for the hotels that require cash payment (many) make sure to have exact change because most places cannot give you change.  (Recommended eating in Steyr - pizza place on the main platz, great pizza served from a window on-level with the platz).
