We visited the restaurant of this hotel with my friends. We were there a group of 18 people and it was ours 3rd time there because it was near our pension. But what happend there we have never experienced before. We sat outside by the folding table and after bringing us our drinks we laid ourd hands on the table. At this moment table tip up and we were totaly wett. There was no excuce about what happend because evidentely it wasnt our fault but the table wasn't fixed well. Instead the excuse the waitress told us that we strongly push on the talbe and we can't do that. So we ordered new beer because the first was spilled. The dish wasnt nothing special but we were hungry so we ate this. When we were paying the bill we don't want to pay spilled beers but the waitress insisted on it and she had to call the owner. The owner came and told us we had to pay it otherwise she call the Police. She didnt want hear that it wasnt our fault and the table was wrong. She became to be very arogant and started to shout on us and told GET OUT OF HERE AND NEVER COME BACK!!! It wasnt about 3,60 for one beer but about principle and good manners to guests. I have never seen such a horrible behavior from the owner. I am the owner of fine dining restaurant in my city but this I would have never allowed because for us is the quest our master. And yes we will NEVER COME BACK.

Incredible behavior of the owner

The entrance to the hotel and the hallways might give one a first impression of "sleeping over with grandma". It all looks a bit rustic, if you will. After that, the rooms are a very pleasant surprise: neat, tidy, simple design and rather spacious. The hotel is located about five minutes walking from the lakeside and is in the middle of town. 

Though mostly quiet, you will at times hear people in the hallways. The plumbing in the hotel can also be a bit noisy, so you'll hear the occasional whistle of pipework.

Hotel staff were very accommodating when it came to an extra bed for our 3yo daughter, who's too long for baby beds. They gave her a wonderful, kid-sized bed. 

Some of the points made by another reviewer also rang true:
* An explanation about breakfast wasn't given upon arrival.
* It sure helps to speak German.
* The front door to the hotel gets locked very early.
* The restaurant terrace closes early (before ten).

Okay for a short stay.

My wife and I are on a 4 day, hit the ground running break to Velden.  Never been before, but we're old pro's when it comes to Austria, so this should be easy, even though we're entering Austrian tourist paradise as most Brits only get as far as Klagenfurt (so we're told!).

Hotel Kirchenwirt, 94 euros per night B & B, and their website says they speak English; I speak a little German, so between the two we should get on ok! 

We arrive, introduce ourselves, exchange very few words and are given a key and showed to our room, by I assume, the owner. First impressions says she speaks very little English. Our room is very small and no balcony, though their website says there is one. Hmm! The safe doesn't work, or it might, but there's no instructions. Hmm!  At least the mini-bar doubles as a fridge! Mmm!

What time's breakfast? We weren't told, so I asked.  The owner (?) wrote it down. Breakfast was the usual Austrian type, and I have to admit very good especially when eaten in the garden in glorious sunshine.

The hotel atmosphere isn't very welcoming, and we feel a need to creep about, and therefore avoid having meals and drinks there.  On Monday night we visited 'Grill am See', a lakeside restaurant run by ex-Brits (Mother and Son), who happen to have a tri-lingual menu, unlike the vast majority of restaurants in the town (The Pavillon also has one!). Food at 'Grill am See' is wonderful, reasonably priced and well worth a visit. 

A thunder storm unleashes itself and we spend most of the evening at the restaurant, until blue skies appear again, around 21:30. Then the opportunity arises for us to return to our hotel, which we get to about 22:00, and thought we'd have a drink and mingle with the other guests before going to bed. However, we are greeted with a hotel in total darkness, and no there hadn't been a power-cut. They'd actually gone to bed and locked the door.  Our room key wouldn't open the front door, and no-one was answering the doorbell.  By now, my wife was doing an Indian rain dance as her bladder was in explosion mode!  Another twist of the key and eventually the front door gave in and we hastily made for our room, and the last bottle of beer in the fridge.

The next day was our last, and as our taxi wasn't until 14:30, we walked into Velden.  The heavens opened again and we got drenched, so we headed back to the hotel early and tried to arrange for our taxi to pick us up a little earlier.  The hotel owner saw our plight, even tried to speak to us about it, but seemed unwilling to help, so we sat in the foyer for 2 hours until our taxi arrived.  Relief at last, but the owner did make a point of shaking our hands and saying goodbye........if only such fuss had been made in the beginning!

We'd go back to Velden again, but next time we'd pay a little more euros for a hotel, as the saying goes, 'you get what you pay for!'
