First impression - not good. Although the guy at the the reception was friendly, the reception was really dirty and smelt of stale cigarettes. Once we checked in, we were directed to our room via the lift, we got in the lift which had no door, and it got stuck - our only exit door was a cement wall!

Room was smelly although bed sheet was clean, we didn't even bother to shower as i couldn't bare the thought of being undressed or bare foot in such a filthy place. when you open window in room you could see where all the crack heads must drink and smoke hanging out the window onto the roof.

at 6am i was woken up by what sounded like a door being kicked in.

we paid £80 expecting something basic but clean for 1 night throughout our Belgium road trip. we stupidly booked because location was ideal being close to train station. 
In honesty, the hotel is clearly where men pick up someone from the red light district / casinos and hire a room for 1 hour - if you know what i mean. 

we made the best of a bad situation and laughed and made it all part of the adventure, however, avoid this hotel if you can.

Awful stay

The local crack den would be more inviting and probably cleaner and in better wording order. Utter dump.stinks fluids on walls. Stinks. Dirty. Stinks. Did I mention it's filthy. Don't stay there. ............................................................................................

Utter Kack

The first impression was like a pastiche of a film noir. Imagine, grizzled, chain smoking receptionist behind a screen. Guests of the “hotel” & billiard hall milling about, sadly, none looked like Lauren Bacall & Humphrey Bogart, instead they looked like they had been styled by Bernie Ecclestone and were body doubles of Vicky Pollard.

The first thing the receptionist stated was that I had the last room in the places so no good asking for any thing better & could he have my bank card or cash. When I said that it was not a great introduction & was he aware of the online reviews, he asked me why I had booked the place?  Well - because it was all I could afford. 

He was correct, no matter how bad the reviews, the hotel was full and usually is. Some of us are stuck with grim hotels.

I’m pretty used to (and quite fond of) “grim” hotels - from the YMCA in Calcutta to above the bus station in Torremolinos. The difference was that whereas most grim hotels try to make the misery bearable with a smile or a hint of kindness, the hotel Billiard Palace was quite aware just how grim it was but couldn’t give a monkeys about the guests, it was take it or leave it. 

So, how grim was it? If you stay above a 24 hour bar & billiard hall with a clientele that would be happy to check into the Mordor Grand, expect the worse.Mother pool hall is on the first floor, the “hotel” is on next 3 floors above that. Actually my single room was adequate, incredibly soft mattress, chair, shelf / table, art!!!! (Dodgy print) small toilet / shower and a window with a view of the back of a car park. I been in worse places......except......the communal areas, the front reception and especially the lift were soul destroying. It would be an ideal place to stage a murder or suicide. So, all in all pretty grim. The worse thing was I came home with many “bites”. If you can possibly afford it try to find somewhere, anywhere else.

On check out………Vicky Ecclestone had been replaced by several Tibetan Monks! Bizarre!

Grim Hotel

Stayed at Billard Palace for 4 nights and I chose it purely for the €50 per night price tag. I had good communication with all staff at reception and they were friendly and helpful. 
Location is pure genius, literally one minute walk from the magnificent railway station, next to various shops and restaurants. The public areas of the hotel look rather tatty and dirty but my room was actually quite nice. The bed was comfortable, tv in full working order, moderate temperatures and bathroom clean and functional. It was positioned towards the rear so no noises from the street at all. The only downside was that during one night I was woken up by guests in another room enjoying themselves quite intimately. So yes, the walls are thin. 
Next time in Antwerp, I will happily stay again, as long as I get such a good deal again.

Cheap and unpretentious 

On the positive side - the location - this is why we chose that hotel, actually.

The reality - there was an issue with the light in the room - the bulb on the ceiling was not working. When we announced this, we were told that it will not be fixed, because it is weekend and there is no technician and the person at the reception is too busy to take care of this. When leaving the hotel I reminded them of the issue and I was told that such things happen in every hotel. Well, I do not agree.

Good location

We stayed in a room that was acceptable but sober. The location is great though as it's near the Zoo, the old town centre and the main train station. Service was rather poor and for drinks there are better places nearby.

Acceptable accomodation

We rode the bus from Brussels to Antwerp and the hotel wasnext to the bus stop.  It was a great price so stayed for two nights.  Close to train station and lot of attractions.  Large pool and billards on second floor. Good secquity

not great but historic place to stay with geat rates

My transport was cancelled (unfortunately) and the hotel was not willing to cooperate nor refund me. I had no option than to call them and the receptionist lady was rude to me and did not want to assist in no way. It is never gonna happen that I will stay with this hotel, they are not helpful, no communication is possible and most of they are not thinking about their travelers.
