I stayed here with 3 friends and had a great experience. Very friendly and courteous staff. Very clean and something a little different. Excellent breakfasts. One of the staff, Emily was very kind and took the time to explain many aspects of life in Belgium. I can highly recommend this hotel.

Excellent hotel.

A beautiful barge and a comfortable and welcoming hotel.  The only reason I have given 4 stars instead of 5 is because the restaurant (which has amazing reviews) was closed, but they did tell us in advance.  The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and the hotel is in an ideal location about a 10 minute walk from the station and about a 20 minute walk into the town centre - all on the flat too!

A wonderful place to stay.

Bedbugs everywhere. So be careful if you stay here. The rooms are not clean. They are very dusty. Combined with the bedburgs ... I didn't sleep very wel. Also no airco. Very warm. Only breakfast was nice.

De Barge is very well located to explore Bruges and in a quiet area handy for the station. Recommend booking canal side view room, nice waking up to the ducks. The boat is fun, different & has everything you need. Beds were comfortable, breakfast very good, setting you up for the day.

Quirky place to stay, great location for visiting Bruges

Agree with other reviews it is a quirky place and we had an excellent stay. Relaxing and quiet and lovely watching the big barges sail by from your bedroom window. Not particularly clean. I don't think they actual pay much attention to this as the wardrobes were covered in dust and lots of fluff under the bed. My one big concern was their charging policy. (And there a lot of reviews about this on booking.com) and I wish I had taken heed. They take full payment before your arrival and then charge you again on checkout. It has been a nightmare trying to get this extra payment refunded. They now say the payment has been released manually but still no refund into my account. Now they say they can't help any further and I need to contact my bank, so I have had to now register a claim with my credit card company. So, I would love to stay again, and it is a lovely place and nice stroll along the canal into central Bruge however I stayed for two nights 19th September and still have not been refunded the extra payment. This has put me off and I wish I had taken heed of the other warnings on booking.com. It has really spoiled the experience of staying in this lovely barge hotel. The owners need to address this as lots of reviews are commenting on it and they are obviously taking no notice for some reason.

Warning they charge you twice and its is a nightmare trying to get your money back

Lovely position on the canal and unusual as you’d imagine, with nautical themes and surroundings. Breakfast was good, but the room was more than a bit tired and not especially clean. Bed and pillows left a lot to be desired. Parking was ok in the surrounding area and the location was quiet as away from the main town about 20 minutes walk.

Quirky place, well located, but a bit average

This hotel is the definition of a hidden gem. We got in late the day of arrival so we planned to have dinner on the boat as it was Sunday. This was an excellent option, Sunday or not. Our food was some of the best I’ve ever eaten. The breakfast is fresh with many options and also delicious. 

Our room was small (it’s a boat) but excellently equipped and every bit of space exceptionally utilized making it very accommodating and welcoming. Every decor decision is thoughtful and adds to the experience. The rooms are incredibly clean, the staff is friendly, and it’s a beautiful quiet atmosphere. The hotel is just outside the city center, but the quiet, view, and experience made the extra few minutes walk absolutely trivial.

Hidden gem - a must return destination

Not far from the railroad station if you travel as we did by Eurostar.

Great nights sleep in a comfortable bed.
Very quiet.
A short walk from the centre of Bruges but far enough away to be blissfully quiet.
Fantastic breakfast.
Spotless room with everything one might need.
Most important - incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, friendly Staff.

Bruges is so interesting and The Hotel De Barge is so good - that is is the basis for a simply perfect city visit and/or Birthday present.

Perfect for a visit to Bruges


Please tell me we got the worst room in the hotel. We booked via Air Bnb and book largely on the appearance of the room, as I like to spend time in the room. Now I know this is a barge and it comes with quirks.
 The platform cut wood for the TV is  coated in a layer of dust and spider webs were hanging at the bottom of the window. When we turned on the lights you could smell the dust burning off the exposed and mismatched light bulbs. I am scared to check the top of the cabinets.
Obviously it was painted with little care as the brown stain is all over the walls and mirrors. The paint job is really poorly done. There is still old paper tape on the wood above my head in the bed room. All the furniture is damaged. There was a piece 9f dirty plastic glued to the top of the toilet tank and the silicone around the bathroom was slapped on with a spatula.
There is no matrass cover. 
They advertised Covid clean. 
I expected a bright clean room like the pictures we saw. 
Dinner. Walked in and the dirty linens and dishes of the people before us were on the counter next to my table. The food was very dated, 1970s dated, and bland. The portions were way to big and I wish they had put the money spent on it into smaller portions and good quality. I can't believe this food was made by a chef. I barely ate my food and it was very over-priced for the quality. 
Covid regulations made things odd but that didn't bother me. That they cleared out bedrooms and used them as individual dining rooms and fed us in shifts was clever. But instead of putting on gloves and removing our plates we had to clean our own table. 
This place is a gold mine for someone who understands having a smaller menu and better quality is profitable. A real modern chef. Who cares about details like the design of the rooms. 
My heart was really broken. It was my first time outside of Brussels in a year. 
I loved being on a barge and despite our neighbors playing cheap electronic music a part of the night I figured well a boat has thin walls ok. 
Instead of apologizing about the dirty dishes etc in our dining DURING Covid the response was "mistakes happen". One ok, two or three...100 is another thing. Despite the fact we filled in our menu early at check in and discussed it with the lady I never got my aperitif, and parts of the order were wrong. I'm vegetarian so requested mashed potatoes and vegetables, nice to accommodate me, I thought. I got a mushy plate of nothing fresh. Well one thing but I didn't know what it was. 
Really a shame. So many possibilities for this place and in general such a nice staff.


Very disappointed no value for money. 

We only live in De Haan, but have wanted to stay here for some time, just curious.  We tried to stay new years eve a couple of yeas ago, as we were going to new years eve party on the wonderful mayflower, and it would have been convenient not to have to drive home afterwards, but we had to stay two nights!!!  So we didn't bother.  Now it was our 47th wedding anniversary, and we had booked an evening meal on the lovely Mayflower next door.  My husband wanted to go early, but  I didn't know he had booked a room on de barge.  A  lovely surprise.  WE had the captains room which was very nice, I had heard that the rooms are pokey but this one wasn't.  On the bed flowers and a heart with 47 heart chocolates, it was lovely.  But that was thanks to my husband.
It was all very pretty and nice, quite special to sleep on a boat on the canal.  the bed wasn't overly comfortable, and in fact neither of us slept well.  Staff were rather cool, and breakfast we had told would be served, but in fact it was a buffet, just the bread was in a paper bag on the table.  It was rather off putting to sit next to the aquarium with lobsters and oysters in very dirty water!!!  
I have to say 5 euro to have tea and coffee making facilities was a lot!!  I know this isn't run of the mill in Belgium like it is in England, even the humblest b and b has tea and coffee (free) in the room!!  But knowing not everywhere in Belgium has this service, I always have my own travel kettle ad tea and coffee along.
So we have stayed there once, curiosity is satisfied, but we won't stay there again.  It was very pretty, but really could have been a lot better.
