My sister, her husband, and I wrapped up a several-city European vacation with our last 3 days exploring Bastogne, Belgium, The Ardennes forest, and several other sites critical to WWII's The Battle of the Bulge in which our Dad participated as a tank commander. Our 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment at L'Hostellerie du Panorama in Houffalize was the perfect base for our daily adventures in the area. 

It's best to have a car to get around efficiently in this area, and driving is easy on highways and in the countryside with Google Maps instructions. The hotel itself is on a quiet road amongst small farms, so be aware you can't just run out to a grocery store or coffee shop. However, we did do some grocery shopping when we went to the Bastogne War Museum and the Bois Jacques section of the Ardennes (an excellent, extremely well-designed museum experience with immersive augmented reality and 3D-designed experiences).

Returning to our apartment after our daily jaunts every late afternoon was a perfect place to decompress, relax, and discuss the day over wine and snacks on our balcony overlooking rolling hills of farms and forests. This is just a beautiful area of the country!

During our stay we enjoyed a 5 course fixed price (very reasonable) Saturday evening dinner, which our host and hostess prepare by reservation on Saturdays. One previous review we read on Trip Advisor had raved about their dinner and that this place should be Michelin 5-star rated. I'm no expert, but I'd agree! The French food and wines were impeccably selected and presented and delicious! We also added a scrumptious breakfast for each day of our stay (home made breads and croissants, home made preserves and juices, smoked ham and cheese plate, fresh fruit, yogurt, and a fresh egg. Lunch and dinner (other than Saturday) are on your own, but the generous breakfast well fortifies you!

We were lucky that we had great weather and very few other guests to run into, and our host and hostess were extremely gracious and helpful but respected our privacy as well.

All in all, I'd love to return to L'Hostellerie du Panorama with additional family members to enjoy the excellent hospitality and the rich history of the region that is so relevant to our family!

A serene stay in the Belgium countryside with 5-star French meals

Le Panorama is a true gem!  Our suite had a terrific view and was very comfortable, and clean.  Stefan and Magali were wonderful hosts.  The included breakfasts were very good, and the dinners were gourmet delights.  You pay extra for the dinners, which are a great value.  They have our unqualified recommendation.

Five stars all the way!

Stayed here this weekend with my boyfriend expecting a relatively humble (despite the beautiful pictures and reviews of this place online) experience. I love a great hotel, I adore great food, but what I love even more: feeling comfortable, pampered, and like I could spend a week right in the hotel and be happy.

We were lucky enough to nab a reservation this weekend, planning to visit Brasserie La Chouffe, nearby. We arrived mid-afternoon and right away knew we were going to adore the experience. Just driving to Houffalize is like taking a trip into an illustrated fairytale - you are surrounded by rolling pastures, small medieval-style villages and deep forests. Seeing cars around you almost looks unnatural set against the classic European backdrop. Walking into the hotel, you are greeted by incredible smells from their kitchen, a staff who welcomes you as if you are family friends, and decor that reminds you of home. The room we had included a lovely bathtub, beautiful cozy decorations and blankets and a view of EVERYTHING - even the river. Just below our window were the tables outside the restaurant, with the view of the cows and pasture - like something out of an old country home in the south of America, or just... any painting by an impressionist French artist.

It's beautiful, but not only that - the dining experience was fantastic (a three course dinner to die for and picture perfect breakfast), and there were plenty of walking paths down to the river through the woods right beside the hotel. Be careful, as they are quite steep, but the hotel staff were clear in their explanation of the hikes and surrounding village.

In the meantime, we had a great day visiting the La Chouffe brasserie in neighbouring Achouffe, where we were led on a simple tour of the brewery and then given a tasting of their beers. Each guest was given a gift, postcards to send their family, and a coupon for a free la chouffe beer of your choosing at a nearby restaurant. It was too much fun, surrounded by tons of gnome and fairytale whimsy and a great experience for any belgian beer lover.

Accommodating, classy, comfortable and one of the most memorably charming weekends of my whole life. Beyond worth it to travel to this town in Belgium.

It can only be a matter of time before they get a Michelin star. The service is easily the best in Belgium, and the quality of the food outstanding. Very simple, no choice but hard to fault. Stunning experience. 

Seriously good dining experience 

We stayed here on a tour of Belgium with Jac Grandchamps of frenchescapade.com.  Three of us had a two bedroom apartment which had all the amenities, including free wi-fi.  The storage was exceptional, especially in the bathroom.  That is important for a multi day stay when you are sharing space with someone other than a spouse. The couple who run the facility are quite charming and helpful.  Best of all, the restaurant,  is extraordinary!!  The husband is an amazing chef who serves food both delicious and beautiful.  Breakfast is available every day.  The restaurant is closed for dinner one day a week, so check on that if the restaurant is your reason for booking.

Worth making a trip to Houffalize just to stay AND EAT here.

Stayed here for business function. The view from the hotel down to the Ourthe river is awesome. It is very quiet besides the bird concerts as this hotel is located on a side street about 10 minutes walking from town. Take a left out of the hotel parking lot and a few minutes later you will be on the top of the Ourthe valley rock walls with magnificent views and overwhelming nature beauty. There is a chain down the hill so you can walk down to the water very easily. 

You may explore the different towns, take a hike in the woods or take part in a sports activity enclosing walking, hiking or water event. The beauty of the Ardennes is within reach and the history very rich.

The hotel owners work the kitchen and the property themselves. The food is absolutely awesome and the service impeccable. You won't find culinary enjoyment like this in many little towns.

The rooms are quite large and have multiple windows allowing the full enjoyment of the views (ask for room 4). Double beds on wooden floors with private bathroom and armoire for hanging clothing. Flat screen tv of course.

Enjoy a glass of wine in the evening in the lounge on wooden tables placed on lovely rugs, very cozy or have breakfast with the open sliding door and view on the Ourthe valley.
