On the positive side, the staff is friendly, and the breakfast was plentiful and there was a lot of selection. The location is quite good, as it's near restaurants and a little village center.

The guest house was pretty basic, and not in the best repair, but apparently that's pretty normal on the island. It's equivalent to what you'd pay $30 for in Thailand, though I paid several times that as I went during the holidays.

On the negative side, I stayed for 1 week, and my room was never cleaned during the week, and the towels and linens were never changed (though there was a posting saying they'd be changed every 3 days). Also, there was a mildewy smell to the room; I'm still getting the mildewy smell out of my belongings.

To mention the good things first: The bed was comfortable, the aircon worked well, there was warm water in the shower and the location was quite convenient with many restaurants and some shops in walking distance.
BUT: The whole place is kind of run-down and shabby, but I strongly suspect that it was never in better shape but has been built in a do-it-yourself like way by crude folks without any glimpse of style or taste, using only the cheapest material. Also the furnishing is totally tacky. The windows in our room have probably never been cleaned; one corner of our bathroom door was just broken off and missing; through one corner at the ceiling of our room you could peek through to the open sky; the walls were smudgy. There was just one small open clothes rail to hang your cloths, no wardrobe or closed closet of any kind; also, there were no bedside tables or bedside lamps. In the bathroom with a naked lightbulb dangling from the ceiling there was no proper shelf or closet to put our things and just one single small towel rail (if we hadn't brought our own suction hooks this would have been a major issue...), the shower mat was stained. The only "decoration" in our room was a kind of chintzy triptych, where all 3 parts where negligently hanged on different levels, so that the parts would not fit together. Not that this would really have made any difference, just to describe the degree of carelessness prevalent in this place. The breakfast was extremely poor anyway, but for Christmas we were just about the only guests and so the night before they asked us what we would want for breakfast - but then the next morning almost nothing of the few things we had asked for were available. Several sulky people where sloppily hanging around the place (family members?), but they all seemed very reluctant to do any work, mostly occupying the hammock. I do not understand even remotely how this place could possibly have gotten so many positive reviews, they must be fakes of some kind!! On top of all that the pousada is ridiculously overpriced - but that unfortunately is true for many things on this pretty but not enchanting island...
