This place is top notch. . . .11 days into our trip, this was our cheapest  and by far best hotel yet. The room was good sized, super comfy  king sized bed, good sized balcony with view to die for, great wifi, very amenable staff, great breakfast on good size tables, secure parking, it ouzes class from a bygone era. . . . . . I take my hat off to you. . .
Built in 1962 (same as me), it has pics of the inaugural banquet in a corridor. The pool(s) are of a decent size, though we didn't use them

Look no further. . You have found your hotel!!

For such a historic town with touristic potential it is surprising how few decent hotels there are! The São Francisco is relatively expensive, but it was worth it for us. Good size, clean room. Great view looking out over the historic city and river. Good breakfast buffet. Pool. Garage parking and a great flat screen TV with cable (including premium channels!) - comes in handy at night when the historic area is virtually deserted.

Best Option

We really liked Penedo and its wonderful setting on the banks of the wide Sao Francisco river. This is a ‘real town’, it's authentic Brazil, with some beautiful churches and a vibrant market. Hotel Sao Francisco is beautifully positioned to enjoy Penedo- it’s a modern (1960s) building with beautiful views over the town and river. I feel that it is somewhat damned by faint praise in TA, and deserves much better press. It has a very nice pool, and served a good breakfast in a dining room with lovely views over the town and river. Rooms are large, beds are comfortable, bathrooms are fine, lovely terrace to enjoy the view. Also you are very close to a couple of good restaurants- we ate in the old square at Forte Mauricio de Nassau, listening to Frank Sinatra and watching the owls flying in and out of the church bell tower, very atmospheric.

Replace the photograph of the hotel with a photograph of the view!

Our agent put us in here on a drive through north east Brazil.
It was not the plushest place we stayed , but the this isn't a tourist hot spot!
As a stopover it was spotlessly clean with a nice pool and very lovely views.
We had a drink in the bar and the breakfast buffet was good.
Staff were friendly though no English spoken but that's my problem and not a fault.
I would liken this place to a travel lodge in the uk bug the 1960's decor gave it charm and character.
Would happily stay again

Very clean with good views

This hotel was a very good surprise. Excellent room, very comfy bed, great pool. Good breakfast. It is highly recommended. The staff is. Very helpful and will do a lot to help. Penedo is also a great city. 

A real 5-star hotel

Good view of city and river from hotel. Basic hotel but close to restaurants and stores. The city is small, but has a European flair since it was founded by the Portuguese several centuries ago. Great for a romantic getaway and beach can be seen by bus ride. A very secluded beach, but pack lunch as not much there.
