Conveniently located in downtown Juazeiro and just a block away from the river, Hotel Rio Center is a good place to stay if you plan to explore both Juazeiro and Petrolina. It is close to a number of street markets, where vendors sell a wide variety of items, from clothing and shoes, to fresh fruits and vegetables, to household items and trinkets. 

My husband and I were in town for a wedding, along with other family members, and we all stayed at Rio Center. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful, and when we’d return from our excursions, they’d have the right room keys ready for each of the guests. Language was a bit of a barrier, as we speak very little Portuguese, so the staff used Google Translate on their computer to try and communicate with us.

The rooms were fairly clean, although our toilet or some other plumbing was leaking a little, so our bathroom smelled a bit damp. We didn’t bother mentioning it as we didn’t want to make a big deal of it. Our bed was comfortable, and the room was furnished with a wardrobe cupboard, desk, nightstand, and fridge.

The breakfast area is on the top floor, and there seemed to be a decent selection of options.  (I was ill for the first couple of days after arriving, so I only had breakfast once or twice.) Brazilians apparently really enjoy sweets for breakfast, and there were a lot of cakes and such. I’m vegetarian, so I’m not sure what the egg and meat choices were; I stuck with the breads and fresh fruit.

Next door to the hotel is a “por kilo” restaurant which we frequented during our stay. (It might actually be part of the hotel; we weren’t sure.) The buffet had a nice selection of salads, bean dishes, and rice and potatoes. Again, I’m vegetarian, so I didn’t check out the meat choice, but it did look like there was quite a variety. By the way, their fresh mango juice is very delicious!
