Staying in Rocinha allows you to escape the high prices charged to most tourists visiting Rio, and the location for this hostel is very good. The family is friendly and the hostel is close to the main road that runs through Rocinha, making it relatively safe. We did hear occasional shoot-outs, but those take place deeper inside the favela.

Free WiFi is available. Its quality is inconsistent. Some rooms will not have adequate access, so you may have to go to a hallway or lobby to get that. Skype quality was especially challenging--very rarely was I able to get a decent connection.

Breakfasts are decent--eggs available most days. Consistently they served cheese, lunch meat, breads, coffee, fruit, and juice.

Sleep quality will depend on room location. Of course, if you stay out all night in Rio, that won't matter so much; you can sleep during the day.  But if you keep more regular sleeping hours, this can prove to be quite difficult if your room faces the outside neighborhood where music will be blaring until 5 AM.... and do NOT get a 2nd floor room because the lobby will be blasting pop music until midnight (or later).

I stayed during the final week of the World Cup when the hostel was overbooked, so our room of 12 beds actually had a couple more mattresses inserted for a few days. And the toilet did not flush on occasion -- out for nearly a day twice during the week. With so many people stuffed into the room, the odds of having a loud snoring person or sick person was very high--we had both.

After the World Cup many people left Rio, so there was much more space in the rooms and the toilets functioned (and actually were supplied with adequate amounts of toilet paper), but with just a few days left, our room was closed and we had to re-locate to a room of 10 beds; fortunately, no loud snorers this time..... but you know the odds.

The facility is decent, the location is very good, and the hosts are friendly.  With more tourist-friendly awareness this could be very desirable lodging. If you want to save money and have a high tolerance level for inconvenience, this could be a good choice.

Affordable Favela Experience

Great stay at hostel rocinha, the family who run it are great and the hostel is a lovely place to stay with easy access to the rest of rocinha and other areas. Good breakfasts every morning with anything you want, and a lounge area with two televisions, sofas, and a snooker table. Fantastic.

A great favela hostel experience

I stayed at Hostel Rocinha for three weeks whilst volunteering in the favela. When I arrived, the hostel had only been open for three weeks and the family worked hard to make sure that everybody was happy. Living there was a great experience, especially during the World Cup! Our dorm had ten beds in it (which was probably about right as there was an ensuite bathroom). Breakfasts there are amazing! Bread, cheese, ham, fruit, coffee....you name it, it was there! And they serve free caipirinhas at 7pm - what more could you ask for?!
