Spend 10 days in the hostel - 4 during carnaval - and I absolutely enjoyed it. The owner is called Carlos and he can tell you anything about the city. He will also make sure you have the best time.
The location is perfect. Botafogo is a nice and safe areas with lots of stores and restaurants. Copacabana beach is 20 minutes walk away. The best thing about the hostel are the people. The volunteers are very kind and with all the barbecues that Carlos arranges, you will meet a lot of other guests.

The hostel's vibe is amazing

We originally booked 6 nights but ended up booking an extra 7 on top. The hostel had a lively buzz all the way through carnival. The staff would always go out of their way to give you tips and advice about things to do in rio. Likewise the owner Carlos would even sometimes take you to the local blocos. Would definitely recommend to anyone staying in Rio. The hostels a 10 minute walk to the metro and 25 minutes to copacabana beach. 

Great atmosphere!

This hostel is probably alright if you just want a place to crash and don't mind about cleanliness, cooking facilities, extreme heat or wifi. The staff and people staying were nice, but the actual building itself is really run down and is in desperate need of a deep clean! The rooms are small and there is no air-con, just fans. The toilets/bathrooms are really filthy and two of the toilets were blocked by mounds of turds the first time I went in. This made me want to leave straight away. The wifi does not work in the rooms, only in the reception area, so this area is full of people on their phones/laptops and doesn't make for the best atmosphere. The breakfast is pitiful with only ham rolls and not great coffee. I am vegetarian, so had to miss breakfast, plus it is so dirty it makes you not want to eat it anyway. 

Not so great

Carlos, the owner of the place, told us a lot about the attractions and the night life of Rio. He is an awesome guy. Besides, the hostel is cozy and fun. In my opinion, the only flaw is that the kitchen is not so well equipped.

Awesome owner, good hostel

Perfect place and atmosphere for an individual or a group of travelers wanting to explore Rio whilst also getting in and amongst the vibrant nightlife that the city has to offer! The hostel is in a safe location, walking distance from the beach and metro. Carlos (the owner) has an abundance of passion and enthusiasm for his job, always around and happy to help as much as possible in any way that he can! The beds are comfortable, the communal areas are sociable and the bathroom areas are kept clean - what more could you want from a hostel! Big up the lads in the hostel - Josh, Luke and Eddy! Top lads, know how to have a good time, especially that Josh haha
