So, we paid $250 a night for a premium room during Carnival. I understand there is a mark up for this event, but, honestly, the room was basic, the neighborhood, though modestly charming, was not intriguing or interesting to warrant three days. We should have stayed closer to the beaches. That being said, the Bonde to the Centro was fun, there are a couple of great restaurants close by, and the Carnival atmosphere was festive. Also, the staff was very helpful and the breakfast better than average. However, when the crowds were gone, the graffiti marred neighborhood just left a bad impression, and I wished we had spent that money elsewhere. We did feel safe all the time we were there, unlike some of the other unfortunate folks. We would not stay here again when visiting Rio - poor value for what you get.

Pricey Accommodation in Average Location 

We stayed at Aquinta Azul during the 2016 Olympics.  It is a great location to all the bars and yummy restaurants and easy access to the metro (Gloria).  The neighborhood is safe for walking.  It's very close to Lapa (famous stairs) and other attractions.  They provide breakfast everyday.  The staff was very helpful with giving recommendations on where to go and what to see.  I would definitely stay there again.  Thanks for the great introduction to Rio.

Cute & clean boutique, awesome and friendly staff in Santa Teresa

We stayed at the Quinta Azul in May 2012 during our tour of the world, it was our first step. The hotel is very nice, clean, well placed and breakfast is top and very fresh! the attentive staff is competent! I highly recommend this place!

That's perfect!

With 5 minute walk to a selection of authentic Rio bars and restaurants in the safe St Theresa district, very helpful staff with good English, and wonderful breakfasts with wide variety of fruit and lovely eggs. Clean and comfortable room and 10 minute vertical stroll to metro in one direction and fantastic views over downtown and the north in the other. A great introduction to Rio.

Very nice staff. The fresh breakfast every morning is delicious. The room is spacious and extremely clean. Everyday amenities. The kingsize bed is a plus. Not far away, street with very good restaurants! I recommend this hotel!

That's perfect.

This one is hard to rate - the staff were very nice and helpful and when the shower didnt have any hot water i was offered another room to shower in while they fixed it. Great location with nice cafes nearby. The breakfast was nice and even big cooked breakfast lovers would be happy. The common areas were lovely and I did spend some time there as internet didnt work in the room. 
But the room (room 7, and I booked the most expensive deluxe type because of other reviews here) was small and dark with little natural light which made sorting cases difficult. It may have been a bit damp but it was hard to tell in the rain. I did see in one of the cheaper upper rooms and liked it more and frankly I think the more expensive ones are because of the outdoor spa bath and I am not sure it is worth it. All curtains needs repair. 
yes there are steps but they do go out of their way to help with luggage.
I wasnt bothered by noise but some would be annoyed by barking dogs as this is in a residential area. I think the tram would have been pretty noisy in the front rooms at the top. That said, the tram provides free transport into Lapa. 
My best advice is to get a fixed price transport here as the taxis seem to think it is further up the hill and they miss it. On arrival our driver went to a number 2000 more than we asked for but luckily it was fixed price.

great location in Santa Teresa

It is true that the establishment is pleasant, the breakfasts served are excellent, the attentive staff is competent, the pousada is located in a charming neighbourhood but we are still a little upset that we have to endure barking all night and other noise nuisances; the view from the room or terrace is far from what we would have imagined; in the end, we come out a little frustrated from staying in this pousada feeling that we could have found better for the same price!!

In the area of Santa Teresa I highly recommend the Quinto Azul Boutique Pousada for a stop in one of the former favela neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro.

This is a romantic boutique hotel.

This Rio b&b gives you a real touch of Rio life. In the hills with quite easy access to the metro (Gloria) which sits at the bottom of the hill ( but please note you will generally need to get a taxi back as it's a very steep walk or use the walk as a work out !) .

The area is very safe and the restaurants along the same street as the b&b are all good (especially the one next door). 

Downside - take care with the b&b stairs all steep & at night the lighting is not always that bright. The dogs ! local dogs seems to bark lots at night bring ear plugs. Don't bother with the room with a jacuzzi - takes ages to fill up and to warm up plus plus no views (room 7). This  room is also very dark - rooms are better higher up with views and natural light (although these rooms might be a bit smaller ) . 


Rio olympics - one of our bed & breakfast's 

Very nice hotel in the typical Santa Teresa area. Just across the street from the Gloria metro, there is a bus stop where you can take several lines to the Carioca metro station or the typical (free) tram that takes you to the same station. On the other hand, this tram only runs from 8:00 to 16:00 and not on Sundays. In addition, the hotel is located fifteen minutes' walk from the Gloria metro, but the slope is still a bit difficult. You should not hesitate to take a taxi (there is always one at the subway station) to avoid this. The taxi costs more or less than 9 terraces (less than 3 terraces).
