My husband and I stayed at Nomady Pousada (or Chez de Monica) for 2 weeks during Olympics. We were satisfied with our stay! Please understand, this is an B&B type of accommodation, not a 4* hotel, so your expectations should be according to that fact. Yes, the rooms might be smaller than you would like to, yes Rosane doesn't speak English so you'll have to rely on google translate and a few words of portugues/spanish. But, instead you get good value for your money, you get to stay on a cozy island in the Barra lagoon with a real local vibe, there are no tourist crowds or risk of theft/robbery like in the rest of Rio. 

It is a bit tricky to get to Nomady Pousada the first time so hope these few tips will help you out:
To get there you can either get a taxi from the airport (a bit expensive, should be around 150 reals) or take a BRT/subway connection and go out at Jardim Oceanico metro station (line 4). Nearby there is a gas station and just next to it is the ferry crossing to the island. Just ask anyone there where is the ferry to Ilha de Gigoia. The crossing is very short and cost 1 real. Once you disembark go straight on the main street, you will pass a minimarket (sometimes there is a young man around 25 there, his family owns the minimarket, he speaks good English and is very helpful) and a few restaurants. Go until the end of the main street, then turn left and then directly turn right. Then go the end of that street and turn left on Avenida das Casuarinas, the Pousada is at nr 330 and is on the left side of that narrow street, approximately in the middle of it. Pousada has internet (works better upstairs close the the office) but sometimes it's down (get used to that in Brazil..) If it's not working you can go eat at Akhbar (a simple restaurant with traditional staple food) on the main street, they have good wifi (if the power is not down.. :) At Pousada there is a nice patio outside. Our room was just next to it so we could hear people talk but around 22-23 o'clock everybody went to bed so there was no problem sleeping. There is an AC in the room. Breakfast is okay, bread, fruits, sometimes ham and cheese. On the same street, a few houses away there is a "lavaderia" where you can get your clothes washed, not to expensive and we were satisfied with the results.
There is a good quite big supermarket "on the mainland" named Hornifruit (I think that was the name) where you can buy superb papaya, avocado, mango and much more! After the ferry crossing you cross the main road and go right just following the big motorway for about 10-15 min and you will see it on your left side. There are no big signs so you should look for the supermarket or ask. You can pay with credit card there. To withdraw the money there is an ATM in a small shoppingcenter just next to the gas station which is next to the ferry crossing "on the mainland". Barra beach is superb and has much less people compared to Ipanema and Copacabana with much less risk of theft, obviously. To get to Barra beach cross with the ferry, then cross the main road and just go straight for about 10-12 min, you can't miss it. :-) 
In total, we recommend staying at Ilha de Gigoia and Nomady Pousada, just come with right expectations!

P.S. Also, don't miss a hike up the Dos Irmaos (starts at Vidigal) with superb views of the city and the Sugarloaf (we climbed up there, awesome! See our other review for the terrific local company we used).

B&B on a cozy island in Barra

I absolutely loved this place! After an initial problem with payment issues, before we even left (no-ones fault) they took a leap of faith and made an exception. And this during the Olympics too. It is quaint and gorgeous. It's on a small island called Ilha da Gigoia, a piece of paradise minutes away from the busy city. A very short ferry ride takes you there and back. You feel like a local walking through the cobbled lanes, where there are a few small bars and restaurants. The decor is quirky and rustic and colourful! The breakfasts were authentic Brazilian. Rosane is the hostess/manager and she is so accommodating and goes beyond her call of duty! If you love being in the midst of the vibe and culture of a country I recommend this. If you prefer pristine "anywhere in the world" hotel rooms then it's not for you.

Authentic, quirky and personal

I would not recommend this place. It is on an island, requiring you to take a ferry for R$ 1 / adult across the lagoon. It is hard to find, and is not known as 'Nomady Pousada' but rather Chez de Monica. The island requires you to walk on dirt/cobblestone/broken cement so you should be prepared for a 10 min walk, carrying your luggage, down narrow, dark walkways. Regarding the house, the plumbing sucks. Our toilet wasn't working for the first 24 hours and when it was fixed, it still took a few flushes. The pipes leak and the shower is small with lukewarm water. Everything is permanently wet, and stinks a little. Like similar places, this house has 3-4 cats. The bedrooms are quite small, with no closets/tabletops to put your stuff down and no windows-so no natural light or way to air out the room. The breakfast has assorted breads, cheese and juice with little fresh fruit/vegetables. Occasionally, we got some ham, sausage, or eggs. Given that Brazil is a developing country, these things are somewhat expected and you adapt, but the degree with which these things consistently disappointed us was high. The first night, with our broken toilet, we tried to cancel our non-refundable reservation on the grounds that we did not get what we were promised, or paid for, but the lady, Rosanna, was uncompromising about waiving the cancellation fee (100% of reservation). To make things harder, Rosanna does not speak English so you have to rely on Google Translate with unreliable wifi.
