We rented a small apartment on the third floor, not convenient if you have large baggage. 13 beautiful cats lived on the roof next door, but the smell may not be for everyone. Reception is in another building which made it very difficult to contact them when the shower stopped working. Wifi was good when it was working. Was not impressed that after paying for 4 nights, we had to fork out again just to leave our backpacks at reception for a few hours. 

Small and smelly but well located

This hostel is a good place to stay in Rio. It is close to Botafogo's bay and train station. Plus it has decent restaurants around. The rooms are clean and they give you new towels every day. The only bad thing is that the rooms do not have windows and no tv, to have a view of the street you must go out to the balcony they have at the common living room. The staff was nice with us. Very decent hostel. 

Good Hostel

This place is tough to rate as it depends on whether you consider it a hostel or a hotel.  We stayed here 4 nights.  They remind customers they are a hostel, but I consider them a low priced hotel. They don’t provide anything a hostel typically would.  As a hostel I rate them poor, as a hotel I rate them good. We were looking for a hostel.

Pros:
Fastest wifi we had travelling 5 weeks in Brazil.  We streamed Netflix every night!
Mini fridge & Microwave in room
Location, steps to subway, walk to sugarloaf, neighborhood vibe as opposed to tourist locale, inexpensive restaurants
Staff are nice and try to be helpful – see below

Cons:
Breakfast not included
Baggage storage fee and liability waiver must be signed
No kitchen access
Fee to use common area shower for day departure
Noise carries through this place like no other.  People try to be quiet, but the acoustics are crazy.   However, we did sleep well.
Staff provide wrong information.  For instance told we couldn’t hike to the 1st mountain on sugarloaf by two staff – of course you can and it’s free.  Told the location of self-service laundry, after wasting an hour determined it didn’t exist.  You get the picture
The tastefully decorated room is small, which is fine for us.  The bathroom is comically small, lets just say you might have to ride side saddle, however at least it was on our own.

Overall, decent low budget hotel, but not the warm hostel we were seeking.
