The place and its surroundings offered a rejuvenating vacation. The staff was particularly friendly. The food at the restaurant was varied and well-prepared, accompanied by very good draft wine. We were not denied even custom orders not included in the main menu.
There were plenty of hiking tracks or places to visit in the vicinity (e.g. the Uhlovitsa cave).

Quiet retreat in the Rhodopi Mountains

This is a nice hotel with clean, spacious rooms. I liked the wooden interiors, but I particularly loved the friendly owner. It is a good place to stay for a few days, as it is quite a long way away from anywhere else. It is located in the centre of Smilyan village and it is quiet -- there is some traffic, outside, but not too much. 
The area has caves and easy mountain/forest walks. 

The restaurant offers traditional cuisine from the Rodopi region, such as patatnik, parenik, and smilyan bean salad. The dishes are delicious and are prepared the traditional way.

Friendly staff, great restaurant

The place welcomes you from the first steps of the stair that goes up in the yard. It's nice and quiet and if in distress, you'll find enough places to hide from the crowd. The yard is big enough and its very interesting setup helps you find a retreat corner virtually anywhere.
A beautiful pond with lots of fish, a very nice trout pool with crystal clear water and a small bridge over, lots of flowers, wooden gates and windows, stone walls and wooden chairs and tables on an "L" shaped terrace overlooking the pond from above are all to complete the image of a nice and very friendly place.
Excellent food and drinks, great coffee, very friendly staff, big rooms but pretty poor furnished.
Good prices too, not only for the rooms (if you book it early enough), but also for the food (great cook!).
The main problem is communication, we could not talk English to almost anyone, but we were lucky enough to find a Bulgarian lady who did and who was kind enough to send our requests to the waitress. There are no English translation for the menus.
Also, the hotel is advertised as "accepting credit cards" but this is not true, we had to find an ATM machine and payed in cash at the end of our stay. However, even though we stayed for two days and ate almost all the meals there, they kept all the receipts in perfect order and correctly handed them over when we checked out.
Overall, it was a very nice experience and we would go back with great pleasure at any time.
If in the area, don't miss trips to the nearby caves, they are a must see and they're having there guided tours (some are English assisted) and what is indeed worth mentioning, there's a tourist information office in the center of Smilyan, right behind the gas station. A very nice guy there was able to give us very useful information about the caves and the surroundings even if it was on a Sunday.
